It's a weird phenomenon how our perception of time changes. You've heard older people talk about it, and us older folks here get it.
I've wondered why that is, like are we just going through the motions and not as aware, and then check in to see another month is gone?
In the last 4-5 years the vision is slipping, body starting to show some wear and tare, and some memory gear slippage as well.
I used to make fun of the older guys @ work... now I AM that guy

That's why it's hard for me to hate on harbor freight. I'll go in there w/o shame. Shits cheap and for the most part gets the job done and if I break it I get a new one. And there's almost ALWAYS a coupon for something on their app.

It kinda bugs me how perverted "Lifetime warranty" has become due to offshoring of everything.

It once meant, "The quality is so good, we'll guarantee it for life". It was highly unlikely the product would die, but if it did, you didn't need to prove anything, you march it back in for them to check it out and they give you a replacement if it wasn't egregiously obvious you did something to kill it. Even if you did, some places would still replace it for not making the product bulletproof enough.

Nowadays "life" means "lifetime of the product, which is an arbitrary value we decide", and they don't give a damn about quality, "we know it's going to fail sooner or later because we hire slave labor to do a shitjob making the product, but don't worry, when it inevitably fails within the next couple of years, we'll replace it, if you're the kind of weirdo who actually saves proof of purchase and doesn't mind going through our pre-defined dance in order to get your part!"

The former is the American way.
The latter is capitalistic bullshit.

I'd really like to see American manufacturing come back to its former glory. I really wish folks were more-OK with spending a little more money for American-made goods.

Thankfully I wasn’t driving, I was on the phone with my sister and I went silent with her after my partner swerved around one, and then another was just standing in the road about 20 yards further down. I saw the brown in its eyes as it’s nose kissed the mirror

 

1 deer, probably down to 25-30 at impact, couldnt swerve because some jackass was speedmatching me. Deer bounced off the bumper & door, then ran back into the woods. No blood anywhere. Had to use a ratchet strap to pull the bumper off the tire.


But ive taken out millions of butterflies on the bike.

 

I have all the parts in a labeled box and bins for this including 3x ANL Littlefuse trays to distribute aux power and blue sea relay. Only the one aux battery in the ‘16 for now. Someday I hope to get to it.

@shifty` the ‘Mercian way is my general concept for FBC, but the problem that I’m realizing is all the communication / questions really add up. So if I’m to properly account for that, pricing becomes insane. It’s already more than double the cost of stuff produced overseas. So, right now, I’m basically a non profit. Which takes time away from family and that’s seemingly more and more counterproductive to my life goals.

I might shelve the whole thing at EOY. Then I’d have time for my own work. On the one hand I don’t want to quit now, after paving the way and working through the major kinks. On the other hand, taxes and accounting fees eat up 15% or so, expenses are 60+% so my forced payroll is about 25% and below minimum wage.

Honestly, don’t be sad. It’s been fun and interesting for me to learn so far.

I think some help would make a difference. Much of the work is stuff my kids could learn. I may well keep it going and work them in as helpers if I can last that long. It’s not oppressive right now. And the longevity increases consumer confidence. Establishing a brand and a reputation. It’s all interesting.

But the comms are the real problem, just doesn’t scale and takes time. The few bad actors aren’t a big concern. Overall it’s a cool concept. There is probably a sweet spot at 2-5x volume with some family / trusted help.

My experience as well. They simply hand you a new one. Did this recently for a hand tool that lasted about 20 years. Here you go sir!

Some stuff does simply last 20 years and some you can expect when you buy it may get the job done, but might not be built to last under heavy use. I mean a $9.99 4.5" grinder works until it doesn't....while you buy 10 other Milwaukee's over time like @The Black Mamba

Looks like the lifetime warranty mostly applies to their "hand tools". So , (have one that has lasted 20 years), and electrical stuff might come with only a 90 day warranty ... as apparently the does currently.

 

Learned they come in twos or more. If one runs across the road, expect another to follow.

 

Local store says the newer upgraded version sells for $249 usually, likely with improvements over the previous models that used to sell for $199 that they don't have stock of anymore.

I'm pretty impressed with the Harbor Freight tools I own. My Pittsburgh ratchet has taken a beating and keeps working. I've used it as a hammer several times and it's like "please sir, may I have another". No issues with their sockets either. For the price they are hard to beat.

 

I’ve cracked a 17mm deep impact socket, and snapped a wobble extension, maybe a 19mm as well.
