Any chance you can do them yourself and save about $1,300?

It’s not uncommon that a professional brake and power steering “flush” consists of just using a turkey baster to empty the reservoir.

Ok, maybe a dumb question...but why use the Toyota Dealer for scheduled or routine maintenance? If not doing it yourself, why not use a reliable auto mechanic shop? The mechanic I go to uses manufacturer's recommendations, isn't that what counts?

Most of these are basic maintenance. As a comparison on the labor vs parts, the front / rear diff and transfer oil changes take about 6 qts. of oil IIRC at about $10 each and new washers torqued to spec, so like $65 in parts/fluids.

Lots of good info here on fluid specs, etc.

Here's a quick link on basic brake flushing if you're interested in how the process works and what you're being charged for.

Having the dealer do basic maintenance is insane. For those things you can't or don't want to do yourself, you can save 30-50% by having a reliable local shop doing it.

I judge that quote as not surprising and reason number one why I do all those things for our vehicles.

None of those jobs is hard or takes special tools.

My country step-dad would call that "highway robbery"...

All of that is work you can do yourself in a driveway. 5-6 years ago I had barely used a wrench and I taught myself how to do all this by watching YouTube and asking questions on this forum.

I'd be planning on swapping those fluids out myself.

Those prices aren't surprising to me though. A family member just paid the Subaru dealership $500+ dollars to swap their transmission fluid. I told them that they'd save quite a bit doing it themselves, but they didn't feel up to the task.

Agreed BUT, now days even the local shops got greedy, at least in my case. My trusted local / indy shop now quotes me similar prices as my dealership :(
Is also hard to find a trusted but also competent local / indy shop as in many instances they manage to fuck your vehicle up pretty good. So is like lottery now days, try to save some money on one side but also have your vehicle screwed up by incompetent shops.

I agree in general, but I am fortunate to live in a pretty highly populated area and there are at least four local shops within easy driving distance that do great work for much better prices. I try to do DIY on a lot of my maintenance but sometimes life gets in the way and I don't want to delay the scheduled stuff by too much.

The key to finding good quality local shops is to talk to people. Three of the four I referred to above do not advertise at all, other than by word of mouth.

BG is just another way for dealers to increase profits. The products are nothing special.

id actually rebuttal that by saying BG products exceed industry standards with their cleaning products. And since this was posted in the 1st gen forum. My assumption is OP has a high mileage best gen and it needs some shining. Other than seafoam(personal experience) i would only recommend BG products (due to my research and others personal experiences)

And I’d say knocking loose a bunch of sludge and carbon can cause more harm than good.

American Society for Testing and Materials Also known as ASTM. They test damn well near every fluid you've ever used in your vehicle.

    Aware of ASTM.

What specific ASTM tests are there with regards to engine / transmission / cooling system cleaning products, and where are the BG results that show they were exceeded?

ALL of the tests done on BG products are listed in their product description. Along with the test type and test results.

    example 1: https://www.bgprod.com/catalog/gasoline-fuel-system/bg-platinum-44k-fuel-system-cleaner/

Im not gonna go to ASTM's PDF files and BG's product descriptions to do all the math. You dont pay me lol but feel free to go through and take a look yourself

none of those astm test results shown relate to a products cleaning ability.

i guess you're just gonna have to contact a BG rep. And go see a demo for yourself? Since you seem to be less inclined to offer some sort of constructive conversation.

i simply stated the tab was expensive due to BG products being used. And their products are NOT cheap.

Why im having to defend BG products is annoying since researching and diving into peoples personal experiences with BG; its definitely a top tier engine cleaning product. You are correct as there is no scientific data that i can find stating the "cleaning ability" or BG products, but i go back to my last state of witnessing "personal experiences".

I have seen BG products in action, witnessed the BG rep dog and pony show, and read their sales materials. That is why I said their products were not anything special, and dealers sell BG because it helps with the profits. The main points the rep made and the brochures was how much more the shop could make by upselling this or that.

The BG sales materials were heavy on the BS and extremely light on the technical details as to why their snake oil would be worth so much more to the consumer than what was currently offered.

BG is expensive because there is a LOT of marketing behind it, not because the products are great.

You boasted about BG passing ASTM and industry tests and whatnot, and clearly that statement couldn’t be backed up.

So is seafoam a better option for OP?

Here's an interesting video showing how well 44k works when it comes to cleaning carbon deposits.

OP should exchange the fluids in his truck and call it a day. Maybe a pat on the back for saving some $$ over the $1766 quote from the dealership.

I would check with a BG certified shop if the flush and those fluids is what you really want. I know there is some debate about the benefits.

I was just at a platinum BG certified shop Monday morning. I would search for BG certified shops in your area.

where I went they had all of the prices listed up on a board. From my recollection, most of those are much higher

IIRC at this shop the transmission was at least $100 less expensive than your quote, and it may have been
the power steering and brake fluid is about the same.

I believe the cooling system and oil/transfer case are also $100 or more greater than the shop I checked with.
