Local Lexus dealer was fine doing an alignment after I replaced the entire rack and tie rod ends

 

You will find some shops that don't really care and will help out. I had one that wouldn't install the parts that I bought because they didn't buy them. Even though the parts that I bought were OEM and still sealed in the box/bags.

 

Just pulled the trigger on an Eaton TruTrac LSD to match my new to me 4.10's, for the 03 street queen. PayPal credit ftw. 6mo interest free. I can definitely pay it off before then.

 

Pretty much every shop in MA is like that.

 

sounds like a hissy fit. Not a shop you'd want to patronize.

 

I love it when people come in for alignments on work we didn't do. About 50% of the time we find stuff wrong and charge to fix it

 

That's a good thing isn't it? More revenue for you, more safety for them (and everyone else on the road).

I never cared when people installed their own parts. We would just say "ok, you HAVE to understand, we cannot warranty anything. If one of the parts you bought fails, it can negate any/all work we did to your vehicle. Do we have a clear understanding? Ok. Sign the waiver here."


Full price and no warranty????? Shhhhiiiiiiiii

 

The shop hated me because I maxed out the camber to be positive to insure the new control arms would achieve something more positive than -0.5 (old control arm bushings were shot and maxed at that number).

Well the guy spent an hour on the machine trying to get it to pass before giving up. Shop manager tells him to drive it off the plates and reset the machine for a new alignment.

After that and the tire slipping (made a pop noise as it pulled off the plate), he was able to redo it and get it to pass.

Lesson learned. Don’t align a front end that’s TOO far out of alignment, which the machine can’t handle.

Trouble in GM 6.2 land today. BIL drove the truck over to the tuner (literally at the end of our road). Offered to tow it over, but said he’d just put it in Low 1 gear and basically idle over. Ok, fine. I’ll follow you. Well, he got on it a little turning out of the hood to go the 120 feet to the shop doing the tune and it popped and code and went reduced power, shut off when he rolled into the parking lot. Scanned the code, P0011, cam advance error. Ok, not awesome, probably from too much throttle and no tune. Cleared code and it wouldn’t restart. Thought it was a bad battery not letting it restart as it was cranking weak at times. Left it with the shop. They called and said they couldn’t get it to start. “Wouldn’t turn over”. Dreaded words post engine rebuild. We get a new battery and test it, barely turns the motor, but it does turn thank god. Bad starter? Nah, I’m thinking timing issue after the code. Screw it, we tow it back to the shop and pull the valve covers. Rockers are all rocking when rotating the motor, but it’s harder than normal to rotate. Pull the spark plugs, no change. Pull the rockers and pushrods, no change in the effort required to rotate. Pissed and disappointed, called it a day. Will pull timing cover and check the VVTI sprocket and timing position when we work on it again. We were so close.

Yeah. Not sure what causing the increase in effort required to rotate the motor. We’re down to cam and crank rotating. I even took the accessory belt off. Zero clunks or tapping noises or anything when it shut off. Feels like too tight crank bearings when you’re first assembling a motor. Something is dragging or resisting. It’s not compression or valve train as those have been eliminated. My poor BIL is heartbroken. Told him to keep his chin up. We move forward.

 

We're not sure what caused it. We were doing some fast boi shit in the sand and I heard popping over some whoops. It sounded like it was coming from the front though. It stopped popping on the next run. That was on Thursday. I had people behind me on trails everyday after that and nobody said anything. It wasn't until we were braking down the camps on Saturday that someone saw it. We went to see Bruce over in CA to get it welded back before we left Sunday morning. All seems we so far. Except the sheen of oil covering the bottom of the truck when I got back home...
