Well I figured the least I could do was post the carnage in case I could save some other knucklehead out there from the same fate.

 

It'll eventually stop rubbing.

 

I believe those are the earlier 93-94 FZJ80 wheels with the steel inserts for conical lug nuts. The other version of the FZJ 80 95-97 wheels using the washer lug nut with no steel inserts. I've read that the newer version don't rub on the WL caliper. Correct me if I'm wrong. I read that on the Ih8mud under the GXOR threads.

 

As funny as that is, it's works...at least it worked great for me. I had a set of spare 14" Honda CRX "phone dials" with studded snow tires mounted on them. I wanted to mount them on my 2005 scion xB (it came stock with 15"). I bolted them on and then let the vehicle back down on the ground and immediately backed up the xB. All i heard was a terrible grinding sound. I jacked the front end up the xB back up and removed the wheels...ahhh, so the calipers are rubbing against the aluminum wheels. 90% of the damage was done already, so i simply kept the wheels spinning while the front end was up in the air. It only took a few more seconds to wear them down to zero clearance. I then ground down the calipers a bit with a flapper disc to get about a 1/4" space. It sounds ghetto, was ghetto, but worked the treat. That was about 12 years ago. I still have the same rims.

yep these are conical and I can confirm they rub on the WL caliper!

 

dang so you took a 1/4" of material off your calipers? that's the kind of ballsy, can-do attitude I admire but rarely achieve. Inspiring

 

It all depends upon how thick the casting is in a particular area. You have to use your judgement when it comes to that. I’ve also had to sand down the oversized calipers in one of my Jeep CJ7’s as well.

 

I'd do slightly longer studs and 5mm slip on spacers.

Not the chincy cheap ones which are worse than swiss cheese but some solid machined ones.

I'd definitely dress the calipers before the wheels, but I'd also hit the wheels with a flapper also to smooth them out (hopefully the alloy doesn't load up the flap discs too quickly), then re-powder or refinish those spots. Just so you don't have jagged edges where it's clear what happened.

It's only stupid if it creates a safety risk.

I don't recall if it's the front or the rear wheel studs that are 5-10mm longer on the 1GT, but the variation is undoubtedly due to disc front vs. caliper rear. I have to go back and reference it.

Edit: Here it is, the reference post I typically dig up for front/rear stud differences.

Looks like the rear is longer, but the added height is actually coming from the serrated/knurled shoulder being taller for the rear, I presume because the axle flange is thicker in the rear. Anyway, may or may not work, if nothing else, get something intended for disc with same diameter and thread but slightly longer (+4-6mm if going with a +5mm shim as assassin reco'd)

As tucked as those wheels are, a real spacer would be fine. 1-1/12” would work. Those wheels have relief between the lugs, so it’s ok if the spacer leaves the factory lugs protruding slightly.

edit: just noticed the rear wheel is not the new ones. Appears the new front wheel is close to the fender edge. I retract my previous suggestion above. May end up looking silly with a thicker spacer.

 

Yeah that seems like the best compromise between safety, cost and poke. I was checking out these because I had seen people recommending Bora but I imagine there's probably something just as good for less money out there.

 

I was just checking with a straight edge and I think you're right - even with the new wheel and tire I have a good 1.25" still to go before the sidewall is even with the flare. That tire is a 245 though.

They're a great option for correct pattern, no excess holes and proper sized bore i.d.

 

I ended up doing the caliper lathe/caliper grind technique and it seems to have worked out fine. Thanks for the tip! Here's a pic of the land cruiser wheels new 265/75 R16 tires, Bilstein 5100 + OME 2884 springs. I got the full 2" of lift up front that firstgen offroad says I would so now I've got about a 1/2" squat. I think the ATS HD springs are next. It's coming along..

17" steelies from a FJ Cruiser along with the center caps. Tires are 245/70/17 Yokohama G015. Seems to go pretty well in the snow. half in lift in the front from the billies

 

I have the same tire size , did these wheels require spacers?

 

Do you happen to know if these will fit on FGT’s? Would I need wheel spacers for 265/70/r16 to not rub calipers/rotors and anything else? Just haven’t saw a picture in this thread of anyone running these!

 

If you have a TRD truck with fender flares the spacers help get them to look right. You may have a slight bit of rub on one side frame rail when turning fully without the spacer.

 

My trusty '03 has 250K miles more on it than when I took these photos. The original split 5-spoke rims are in need of refinishing and they're currently dismounted. So, I've been thinking of having the OEM's powder coated in a bronze, black bronze or chrome bronze. I've perused every page of this thread and haven't seen a truck in desert sand paint with bronze wheels. What do you think about the combination?

Btw, FJ Cruiser wheels stand out as a popular alternative on best gens throughout this thread. My truck's now wearing some FJ wheels with winter tires (page 27).

Don’t know if anyone is running these? If so, could you drop a picture? Would they clear the calipers and rotors? Also, would there be any rubbing or cutting required with 265/70/R17?

Thanks! I was looking at these yesterday. I can't find the color labeled on the can or cap, but the HD tags note the colors as Gold Rush and Champagne Bronze. Who knows which is closest to your Warm Gold, freaking marketers changing names to fit various regions. There's also a metallic brown that might look good on the desert sand truck. I'm going to prep the wheels and try both, or all three colors, and see which coordinates better.

I'm seeing both gold and bronze on more custom car wheels lately. When I drive around and look at wheel-paint combinations, silver and aluminum almost always looks good. The black stealth look is everywhere, too. But I'd like to try a distinctive color without being gaudy.

 

If anyone is interested, I’m putting these wheels and tires on marketplace today. I got new scs wheels so these gotta go. I’m near St Louis.
