I have a 2012 toyota tundra that has started with the 4 lo light flashing, the check engine light on solid and the trac control on solid. Checked it will a code checker and it said error code p0983 which was shift solenoid d high. Tore into the trans and changed solenoid d and started it up, put it in drive and the lights come on again, and again got the error code p0983. We're stumped 500 plus dollars for the solenoid. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you clear the code(s) with a scanner or disconnect the battery cables during/after the repair?

Yes repeatedly, the lights come right back on as soon as I hit a forward gear.

The code(s) should clear itself within a short time, but you may have to drive the vehicle a short distance to clear it. If you can, I'd scan 'all systems' then once it throws up the codes make a note of them for reference and then manually clear them out. C1201 will usually present itself sympathetically w/the P0983 code. The C1201 code is what causes the truck to enter limp mode. Anyhow, once you clear the codes, drive the vehicle and hopefully the codes remain cleared, but if they don't take note whether or not the vehicle was able to shift into 5th and 6th gears prior to the CEL and codes coming back on. If it was able to shift into 5th and 6th, then you're probably dealing w/a connections issue or something else electronic and not a mechanical issues.

There could be potential for it to also be a connection w/in the wiring harnesses. The pins are pretty small and can lose their integrity in their connection/tension within the connectors. Also, the wiring harness that is on the outside of the transmission can become corroded from salt, etc. and have connection issues as well causing the truck to throw the same codes and enter limp mode.

Yes I have read all the forums on this problem. I have also watched a hoard of videos too. I wonder if we didn't change the wrong solenoid. From one video we watched, he said to change the 3rd from the front or 5th from the back which is what we did. A video I watched yesterday changed the 4th solenoid instead. I have taken it for a drive to see if it would change it but it hasn't. We changed the filter and the fluid when we did the repair so I think it's good.

Did you ever figure this out? I’m having the same issue. I just bought the solenoid but I’m hesitant to change it now. My car shifts fine as long as the codes are on but they keep coming on no matter how many times I clear it.
