Is sluggish acceleration normal for a stock 5.7L Tundra?

How does using a vehicle scale tell you what the payload or towing capacity is?

 

Subtract the number on the scale from GVWR = Payload.

eg: Tundra GWVR = 7200 lbs.
Tundra + you (driver) + full tank of gas + your running boards / E-load tires etc etc clocks in at 6000lbs on the scales
7200 lbs - 6000 lbs = 1200 lbs of payload.



Bonus math: How many lbs are in a ½ ton?

 

My 2011 Rock Warrior would snap your neck and roast the tires. 2018 Platinum does not unless I toggle Tow/haul mode.

 

My only gripe about my Tundra (bought used last summer) was the "sluggish acceleration". I came from a 2014 Ford ecoboost which could def get up and go. I bought a Pedal Commander about 3 months ago and now that complaint is gone.

Yeah, I've heard that but I've had no issues so far. I did put it in "eco 4" today to see what it was like. HOLY HELL was it unbearable. I usually have it in "City 1". I didn't leave it in Eco mode long enough to even see if it made a difference.

 

Sounds like the underlying issue is the power source. The pedal only gets like 5V of power to it and the PC draws it's power from there. It can experience intermittent failure due to undervoltage and cause the dreaded dead pedal. The Banks Pedal Monster uses a dedicated 12v power source to eliminate that possibility. I only hear of a few people on here that have complained, so it must be somewhat rare. Glad yours is working great for you.

What you think as poor throttle response may be different than what others are experiencing. The only way to tell for sure is for you to go driver another Tundra and see if it performs the same. It's possible that the cats could be plugged and causing the laggy performance. I've seem customers pour two stroke boat in their tanks and plug the cats.

 

Wow haha. Yeah, it works alright. Several of my dash lights came on and I took about 1,000 miles off the lifespan of my tires leaving the gas station about half an hour ago

I honestly didn't think it would be that distinct. The tow/haul, by itself, just feels like a placebo button to me, but what you mentioned is the real deal. I wonder why they have this feature and don't spell it out in the manual???

Throttle mapping is different on the 2014+ trucks. But I also wonder if the Toyota Safety Sense included on the last few years of the 2.5gen plays a part as well. We’ve got ALL the nannies…

 

I will say my 07 5.7 CrewMax Ltd is a monster when it comes to accelerating. Even better at highway speeds. I really have to feather the gas pedal while city driving as it snaps my neck back with even a little too much skinny pedal. I also have a Flowmaster 10 series with dual 2.25” mandrel bent SS pipes coming out the side which always puts a smile on my face when I punch it. Don’t these things have 4.30 gearing as well?

 

Yes, 4.30 gears on the 5.7 with tow.

I will also confirm that throttle mapping is different for ‘14+. After driving my sequoia for a bit, I usually bark the tires in my truck for a few lights before my brain remembers the difference.

@Mr Badwrench - welcome to secret society of nanny-defeating tundra owners SUCH a different animal with all the cheat codes enabled. Haha. But I’ll stick take them in inclement weather - it ain’t difficult to get bent out shape in a hurry with bad roads.

Also, to add to the throttle response fix - I am of the opinion that a tune is best, the banks is good, and the PC is ok.

 

A supercharger doesn't belong on this list?

 

Haha. PRE-supercharger… now it just lights them up for a 1/2 mile before I realize the roads are dry and I’m just burning rubber. Might have to put one in the sequoia just to make life easier…

 

The fact that they don't mention this in the manual (NOWHERE to be found in the manual) makes me wonder if it has something to do with testing the trucks for quality/functionality control before they are sold.

 

Does the truck have stock sized tires?

 

If you’re asking me, yes at the moment (winter tires), but I have 33” tires for the summer. Makes no difference really. My daughter’s 2011 5.7 Tundra is on 33s right now, and her truck is actually worse in city driving than mine when it comes to snapping your neck back when accelerating from a stop. Very sensitive skinny pedal in my book, and power to boot. She also has the tow pkg, and with 4.30 gears you will accelerate quickly. Damn, most folks who drag race their cars don’t have 4.30 gears. Lol!

 

If you’re asking me, yes the truck I checked out had stock sized tires.

I’m definitely going to check out some other used tundras. So we’ll see if a different truck has the same or better (or worse) of a feel.

I’ll definitely report back here what I find…. And how bad the pricing probably is, lol.

 

Traction control is just that - it's why you can only get a little chirp out of the truck when you floor the throttle. They do explain in the manual how to turn it off as I recall.

Sadly it resets itself like most nannies do because someone would sue them for crashing if they disabled it and forgot to turn it back on.

 

On my old truck I installed a gadget that turned off traction control automatically every time I started my truck. If I wanted to turn it back on I just needed to tap the button once.

Just tried the true beast mode for the first time. From a slow roll (5mph) it didn’t really feel faster than just TH mode. But when I stepped on it from a dead stop, it lit up my AT’s until I decided to let off. Changes the attitude of the truck IMO

 

Did it light up both rear tires? I've found only one will spin easy when turning off the traction control.

 

Both. I have Kenda Klever AT2 275/60/20. Even in TH it always seems to spin both.

 

Isn't that gadget still available? I thought a member made some a few years back. Maybe......
