How a failed main bearing can push RMS out? In turbo engines a pushed crank/camshaft seal is due to excessive crankcase pressure, which indicates a failed or under-delivering PCV.

PCV in turbo engines not only have to evacuate more blow-by gasses than in N/A engines, but it also has to be several times more complex, because there's simply no vacuum anywhere in the system when a turbo spools. Turbo fresh air inlet is the only unassisted point that have any vacuum, but it is insufficient in most cases.

Unless pressure relief valve is sticking in the oil pump. In that case it lets the oil out at high RPM and then does not reset back promptly when RPM drops, which leaves the bearings without oil pressure.

Exactly. That is what warranties are for. If worried, buy the extended.

UPDATE: Dealer had the Toyota Rep. onsite to look over the truck, they did determine that it does have a oil leak, they are not sure from where until they tear it down. They indicated it is either the RMS or the housing around the seal. What a bummer, ever thought I would have a new truck with just over 2000 miles needing a tear down. Thanks Toyota !!!

This is really nothing new for Toyotas. There are a lot of 2GR engines that suffered oil leaks from the front engine cover. There are a ton of 3UR with oil leaks from the cam towers. Toyotas do last a long time and Toyota does stand by their product and tries to fix the issues that arise. I wouldn’t worry too much but do ask for more warranty.

My lift outfitter saw this on when installing my lift @4,000 miles. Went to Toyota for them to look at it, and here’s the response I got today:

“Hello! So my manager was in contact with our reps from Toyota corporate. They told us it is a known issue on the 2023 Tundra. There is an adhesive that they use, so when it warms up it melts and tends to look like a rear main seal leak. What they recommended is that we clean it up and you drive it for roughly 1,000 miles so if it does continue to leak we know it isn't that common issue. I hope this helps out, I will be off tomorrow but you can most definitely stop by and pick up the vehicle. “

I will keep y’all updated after I drive it for another 1,000 miles.

The problem with 2GR timing cover leak is that owners are stuck with $4k repair. I ran a poll on Toyotanation and about 1/3 of owners report a leak. The repair is expensive because it requires dropping the subframe, engine and transmission to access the cover. Toyota has known about this problem since 2005 and never fixed it because most of the leaks start after warranty expires (or owners don't notice it until then), so Toyota's approach has been "not my money, not my problem". I actually reached out to some lawyers to see if we can initiate a class action suit and make Toyota extend the warranty for this specific problem to 10 years / 120k miles.

Update on this topic ... Toyota Corp/Tech requested the dealer to drop my transmission to assure it wasn't the rear main seal. Once removed they determined it was residual oil from the assembly process, they had me come in to see what they seen. The cleaned all the oil out (they tried before removing the transmission however the weep hole in the bell housing angles at a slant so they couldn't properly clean it without removing the transmission). No more oil residue. According to the Tech Toyota changed the assembly process to assure this wouldn't be an issue for the future builds.

Compare and contrast to what Ford would do with an F150. It would take 8 weeks to get and appt to have them tell you they have no idea and another 4 weeks to get a ruling from Dearborn on what to do. Toyota handled it well for you.

I agree!! I have a good friend that is a tech for a local Ford dealer, he couldn't believe it, said Ford would have had a "wait and see" for the next 36,000 miles :)

40man .. great question! Believe me that was my first question!! The assy. oil would actually show up with the black light, what they didn't pick up was it is a different color than the dyed that they put into the motor oil. I didn't believe it until I seen it.

The dealer also wanted me to see the truck apart before they cleaned any of the oil residue off. I could wipe a clean white cloth around the RMC and plate, nothing. All the residue was at the bottom of the bell housing, it surely wasn't engine oil.

I purchased a 2022 Tundra back in October of 2022, I have roughly 36,000 miles on it. October 19th of 2023 my engine went out and I had it towed to a Toyota dealer, after Toyota investigated the the problem it was discovered that the engine bearing wasn’t machined properly and wrecked the engine. After 3 months of Toyota having my vehicle they finally put it back together and test drove it. After they test drove the truck they noticed oil leaking from the rear main seal, so now they are currently working on that issue.

My 2003 tundra was solid, didn't care how badly I abused it. Multiple 4Runners and hundreds of thousands of miles, never an issue. I started offroading my '19 4R with fewer than 50 miles on it, and it never developed an interior rattle. That thing was as solid and well put-together on the inside as it was mechanically.

The '23 tundra would be close if I could remedy the rattling driver window run and center console latches.
