Argh, did this yesterday accidentally with the key in my pocket when parked on a ferry. Scratched the tailgate.

I took my Tundra to the dealer today and all I got was blank stares. "Never heard of it", 'how could that happen', "Can't disable it, don't know how" combined with blank stares. Service mgr did say he would look into it but I already know what his response will be. Next step is raising hell with the GM and showing him the damage. Does anyone know who in Toyota would be the proper contact?

____ Absolutely NOT fake news. Found out yesterday that this does happen. Pulled out of the driveway and as I got around to the main road a guy pulled up beside me and told me the tailgate was down. The trailer scratched up the tailgate. Had the key in pocket and i KNOW the tailgate was up when I pulled out. Totally pissed.

Lol I wish I would have disabled it when I bought the truck. It happened to me not once but twice getting out in the garage. I’ve got two scratches and have mentally trained myself to not do anything getting out of the vehicle until I know the key fob is not in my pocket. I’ve gotten over it now writing it off that a truck is bound to get scratched eventually. It just hurt a little knowing it was preventable if I paid more attention

I'm glad I found this thread. I haven't had any tailgate accidents, but I can definitely see how it can happen. When I go to the dealer for my 2nd FOB, I'm going to request to have the remote tailgate feature disabled. Hopefully, they don't look at me like I'm speaking Swahili.

There seems to be a few different answers on being able to disable this with carista. Can someone confirm if carista can or cannot disable this?

Didn't know you could look through all the options online. Just looked and didn't see that option through carista so I'm gonna say no. Guess the only way is if you have techstream or go to the dealer, which I'm sure mine would charge for.

Just for grins I submitted a request on the Carista site to see if they might be interested in adding this to their options.

How about the unintentional and accidental time when you walk across the parking lot and something (change, other keys, etc) in your pocket pushes against the fob? I'm deinately gonna find a way to get rid of this 'feature that's already damaged my 2-week-old Tundra. Sorry engineering.

Carista definitely does not support this customization yet. I entered a user request this week so hopefully they will implement soon. Haven’t damaged my tailgate yet, but it fell when i was leaning across the back seat with the fob in my pants pocket already. Super easy to trigger, don’t like it a bit.

See the Customizable Features section towards the back of the Owners Manual. After reading this thread and coaching from others here, I will have mine programmed to disable the fob button for the tailgate opening.

Brought mine to the dealer I purchase from, and they disabled for free...
Got a nice dent with chipped paint from it coming down on my boat hitch. Buddy of mine, not the button.

Asked my dealer to disable it while they were peforming the e-brake and fuel line recall and at first they said it wasn't possible so I even gave them the TIS module code to look under and they said they couldn't figure it out....wish someone in denver had TIS I could buy a 12 pack of beer for them to disable it....

I made the same request. It took them a week or more to get back to me and said it wasn't something they were looking at implementing. Hopefully they'll reconsider.

The tailgate accidentally opened on the day I bought the Tundra. Luckily my garage door was open. Researched the issue and found several threads noting the issue. Only fix is to have the dealer change the code from one push to a double push on the fob to auto open the tailgate. In the meantime, I modified/trimmed a tarp strap to hold the tail from opening accidently. This is a simple fix, until I can get the dealer to reprogram.

Just used a standard black tarp strap probably 3/4" wide and about 12" long, trimmed to length. I pull fairly tight (will stretch a little over time) to judge the length, trimmed a radius, and drilled a hole. The stock tailgate cover sheet screw worked good to keep in place. After I installed the strap the fob in my pocket accidentally opened the tailgate one morning, and the strapped saved it from hitting my garage sink. The strap only allows the tailgate to open about 1/4". Not fancy, but saved my tailgate!

Great tip, thanks! I reached into the guts of the fob with a small pair of clippers and snipped the knob off. For sure the dealer would charge me to change the setting.

I disabled it via TechStream. Pressing or holding the button on the fob does nothing now

Just had mine disabled at the dealer while in for the Brake recall. Took 15 minutes and was free. '23 SR5.

Bringing this one back up. I have a bike rack on my hitch that is usually attached most of the time. I was putting my kid in his carseat and must have hit the fob tailgate open, came down hard on the rack and gouged the paint on the tailgate. What did you tell the dealer to get it de-programmed? My dealer said it would completely deprogram the fob, which I know is BS

New garage door here, and I didn't want to take a chance so I opened up the fob as mentioned previously and ground down the end of the button with a Dremel to avoid all risk. Pressing that button doesn't do anything now. My dealer had already supplied two fobs with full functionality and I'm the only one using this truck so in my case one fob with a non-functioning tailgate button wouldn't hurt me much in the long run.

Look in your owners manual, there's a page showing what can be configured. The dealer can change the settings via TIS. I've changed mine myself and nothing happened to my fob.

I don't doubt it's doable. The problem most of us have is convincing the dealership to do it or having access to TIS ourselves.
