You CAN be a pilot. You need to get what's called a SODA or Statement of Demonstrated Ability. It basically says that you can perform the duties of airman without endangering public safety. You would need to prove, in your case, that you can tell the difference between the colors necessary (aviation red and green), for the safe performance of airman duties.

 

I believe, at least to some degree, that he may still have issues obtaining aviation related employment even though he's able to obtain licensing; as many companies and their insurance carriers require higher standards for their pilots than what is required to obtain various licensing/ratings...

I could see that being a deterrent for investing in hours, etc...

 

Yeah, at the time it seemed like a huge hurdle to overcome.

I was 17, working a dead-end job and paying out of pocket for flight time. The plan was to get my private license and start applying to a few different helicopter programs that had some different scholarship/financing schemes.

Later on I did get the opportunity to fly in some cool helicopters through another career path. Spent a lot of time in the back of an EC135 and a Bell 207. Maybe someday I'll revisit my private license, but in all reality I would rather jump out of them than fly them!

 

I think a helicopter would make privacy & off-grid living so much more commutable.

 

Getting a helicopter rating is stupid expensive. But, I agree. I wouldn't mind having my own private airstrip out in the middle of nowhere either.

It's really not that bad if you're already rated... Most guys get their private, commercial and other ratings operating fixed-wing aircraft since it's cheaper per hour to rent and operate; and then just do a rotorcraft add-on rating to the private or commercial license (much cheaper path)...

Besides, if you can afford the helicopter plus about $500/hr +/- in maintenance and other costs to operate your own, then I'm guessing the rating is a drop in the bucket.

Heck I think we average about 120-150/per year (helicopter accidents in the US) and about 20-25 of them each year are fatals...

Most are either commercial public transport type (tours and sight seeing) or guys doing some really dangerous shit (electrical, etc.)

 

Ran out in the snow to coat the door seals with 303 Aerospace when it started to rain. Don’t want to wake up to frozen doors.

Thought about getting the add-on rotorcraft, but I don't like the fact that if you have an engine out, there's no glide in a helicopter.

 

As long as the rotor is turning you can autorotate.

 

Alright I need some urgent help please! replaced my headlight housings this morning and the passenger side corner marker light lens popped off. It looks like it has a ridge that can snap back in but I can’t get it to stay. Nothing is broken, maybe some clear silicone around the edge in the meantime? Anyone had issues with this? @shifty`

 

Usually it’s set in place with a butyl rubber material. Gotta scrape it out and reapply

 

I used Valvoline in the "FlexFill" packaging to fill my transfer case a few days ago. I can confidently say that I will never pump gear oil again. Its not available in 80w90, but I saved the empty FlexFill package to use when I service the rear diff.

 

I know that pain! Access is not so bad in these trucks, but I feel like I've spent weeks under various makes pumping gear oil. The FlexFill packaging is amazing, you can squeeze a whole quart in about 20 seconds flat. No messy hoses or pump to cleanup afterwards.

EPs and staying up on your proficiency of them make a positive outcome in that situation much more likely

 

The only thing I've noticed is the hum stops after a few seconds once I take my foot off the gas. Then I hear the "wah-wah" sound of my wheel bearings that need to be replaced.

 

I replaced the carrier bearing AKA center support bearing on the drive shaft and it didn't make a difference. In fact the old bearing was only 3 years old and in good shape until we mangled it trying to get it off.

You found one!? The modular intake tube and filter for the OEM air box kit has been discontinued for a few years. I got one of the last ones. Unless they started making em again.
I think @empty_lord bought their full CIA and just used the tube.
Anyways, I like mine for the 2uz.
I also had one on my 5vz Tacoma. Liked it too.

 

Yea I found the whole CAI on sale for like 210 bucks… so I bought it purely for the tube lol

Amazon => Morimoto Retrorubber (MRR). Remove bulbs and rubber. Stretch it out and slide it into the channel. cap it back together. Bake in the oven at 250° - 275° at 5-7 minutes time to melt the MRR. Allow time to cool.

This is what gets done for any headlight retrofit, bake to soften the glue, pry lens off, reapply MRR, bake together.
