if there are no adverse effects at all, why wouldn't toyota just have 400 all the time, I don't get it, there has to be a reason why not.

does it not let the battery charge enough since there is a bigger power draw or soemthing ?

odd though since our 2023 AWD 25th Ann Sienna has 1500 watt inverter that works when its on full power

we cooked some stuff in a crock pot heading to a gathering one time, lol. pretty sweet

Personally, I find 400W kinda useless. That won't even run a typical toaster, or a coffee maker, let alone power tools. I guess if all you need is to charge your phones, or run a few small lights, it works, otherwise not so much.

I wanted to try the CaliRaised 400w anytime harness that they have listed for the Tacoma. I did some research and the harness and wire placement is the same as the Tundra. Just has different colors but they are the same pin locations. Got the kit in and had it installed in about 15min. The rear console cupholder pulls right up and the console cover that faces the rear seats pulls straight out. The right side has a wire harness attached so it won’t pull out very far so don’t pull to hard. I did not disconnect it and it was fine. You have tons of room to access the harness from the inverter. Plug the new harness into the factory harness and connect the wire with the eyelet to a ground and slap it back together. Tested it with my cooler in the back and it stays on and runs now when driving. Hope this helps anyone looking to do the mod. It was less than $40 for the kit

I just ordered it as well and will probably install it this week. Sounds like nobody has had issues so far.

Sorry. Have to disagree. That’s 400W @ 120VAC / 3.5A. It takes 35A @ 12VDC to invert that amount. The Alternator can handle that easily. I believe we have 180A alternators. I’m checking. *Confirmed*

Thanks forum for all the great information!
Installed mine about 4 weeks ago, running strong with about 260W peak draw in the bed (60W fridge + 200W charging a portable battery).
    Got my kit from https://caliraisedled.com/products/400w-anytime-wiring-harness
Other shops don't seem to have stock anymore.

I wanted to make my own harness but turns out the connectors are a bit hard to source & expensive, (The part# are mentioned in the tacoma thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...tap-400-watts-3-33-amps-mod-connector.732423/) and I didn't want to tap the oem wiring . Plus I'd have to get new crimping tools for that, the $45 harness started to look like a good deal.

Installation was a bit tricky for me maybe just on my truck. The wiring in the console are very snug, I had to unplug the temp sensor (?) which itself was a huge pain.
Also I had difficulty accessing the bolt on the inverter rack because the DC input wire was too snug and was in the way. I connect the ground terminal directly to the inverter casing at the end, with the screw on one corner of the fan.

According to the CaliRaised site it says non hybrid. I had my panel apart last week and I know the wiring looks the same, wonder why it isn't for hybrid also. Possibly because we don't have an alternator?

My guess is that because the throttle and steering are both "fly by wire" now, Toyota doesn't want to divert too much power to the 120v inverter while you are under way. A sudden draw by the inverter causing a momentary loss of full 13.1v of power could cause loss of steering. Liability stuff.
I'm guessing this is why some sources are no longer selling the harness.
I'm sure it's fine. No one has had any issues.

I would think the existing harness could be modified pretty easy (and for cheap) compared to a $50 plug and play thingy.
Isn't that what Tacoma owners were doing before companies made a harness?
100w isn't much. Back in my day that was a single strong light bulb.

Just for clarification, steering is not "fly by wire." There is still a mechanical link.
Steering is electrically assisted (EPS) instead of hydraulically.

    I went for it.
Grounded the inverter side of the light green wire #6
and cut the grey wire #2.
The inverter is working but I didn't test the output.
I mounted a small 200w 120v heater to keep my ski gear a bit warmer during the drive up.
(nothing worse than putting on ice cold ski boots and your feet stay cold all day)
It's working initially but we'll see how it goes.

For some reason the 200w heater is turning off. I'll need to see if it's truck related or the heater is just a $18 turd.
So the jury is still out on whether or not this mod works.

    Same use case here.
Does your heater require pure sine wave 120V?

These shitty Toyota inverters can only do square.
I bought and tried 3 different electric heated blankets (to throw over my ski bags in the bed, for the same reason as you), only to see them blink for a bit and never actually work.

Fed up, I installed a 12V outlet right under the 120V outlet in bed, and bought a 12V heated blanket...this works, and keeps my boots/bags "normal" temp when I get to the slopes.

    PS:
    Where at? Icecoaster here...
