I have this media cabinet that has been driving me crazy since I have lived in this house. It has been way too hot outside to do any thing useful out there so i decided to tackle this project. Every time I had to change something on the network it was a PIA. So I went to Fry's and picked up a two CAT 6e patch panels and RJ-45 connectors, and RJ-45 boots to keep everything nice and neat.

Almost time to upgrade that 6141 modem. Already outdated. And hopefully, that drop amplifier isn't just feeding your modem. That will raise your transmit levels and distort the signal. If there is no other coax lines hooked up to your modems service provider, there should be more than enough signal to power that modem. Otherwise, something is really wrong with your cable feed. Besides that, good job. Very clean.

Or this mess I came across outside a house...IMG_0243.jpg

I didn't have a whole lot of time to clean it up, but I left it better than I found it.

What would be a good replacement for the 6141?

When I first moved into this house 13 years ago I was having connectivity issues. The Cable guy came by and provided me with the amplifier. I get 53 MB down load speeds so I am content. Would you suggest taking the amplifier out of the data stream and see if I get get a good data transfer rate?

Well, that modem only has 4 downstream channels, so realistically it's max download speed would only be about 100 Mbps. If you are paying for more than that, you will not get it with that modem. I would look for a modem with 24 or 32 downstream channels and 4 upstream if you want one that will last awhile and capable of higher download speeds and bandwidth.
As far as the amp goes, that could have been a bandaid fix to a larger problem. Not only would that amp boost cable signal, but it would boost noise too if that is present. I couldn't tell you to take it out unless I knew your signal levels. If you are a Comcast subscriber, I can tell you your levels. Otherwise, you would have to log into your modem and look at the connection specs. You can do that on a hardwired pc by opening your internet browser and typing 192.168.100.1 in the address bar. You may need to login depending on the make. If it is Motorola, i think the admin is admin, and the password is Motorola. Once in there, you will be looking for the downstream receive power, downstream snr, and upstream power. Downstream power ideally should be between -8 Dbmv and +8 Dbmv, SNR above 35 Dbmv, and upstream below 54 Dbmv on all channels. I don't like the upstream getting into the 50's at all. Around 40 is ideal.

Also, that amp is boosting your downstream signal up by 15 Dbmv... so for example, if you are seeing your downstream receive levels at +12 Dbmv (way too high, and distorted at the modem), taking that amp out will drop your levels to -3 Dbmv, right where it should be, in the "sweet spot" between -8 and +8.

Yes, I would leave it out. You are right in the middle of where you should be signal wise. The amp would distort your signal, which your modem will not like. Your modem may drop those distorted frequencies and look for non distorted frequencies. If they are all distorted, it would be a non stop process. Your signal quality and upstream transmits looks good too. Also, your modem is locked onto 8 downstream channels, so realistically it can do up to 200 Mbps download speeds. I wouldn't worry too much about swapping your modem out yet unless your cable provider advises you to or you upgrade your speeds. However, that modem is on Comcasts end of life list in the system I work in...

    Areith,

Thanks for your help. I am now getting 57.36 Mbps download speed, 5.74 Mbps, with a 13 ms Ping. This is a nice improvement!

If you are on a 2.4 GHz network, then not bad. You can't expect much more than that on 2.4. If on a 5 GHz network, then that depends on what speeds you are paying for.

If that is all you are getting for internet speeds, I wouldn't expect a VPN connection to slow that down much. You would still be limited to your VPN's server speeds. How are you connected to the internet (WiFi, hardwire) and what internet speed package do you subscribe to?

All I can do in my house is WiFi. It's an old house (1940s) with lots of brick, plaster and small rooms. There's only one cable drop. In the basement. So, the router and the cable modem are down there. I need to see if I can get Comcast to swap out my modem for a new one. The one I'm currently using is almost 5 years old.

Router is a Linksys WRT1200AC flashed for NordVPN. I have two TPLink RE450s running as well. One on the main floor and one upstairs. I'm considering adding another one or maybe some Powerline kits. Connection speed in the basement is double what you get anywhere else in the house.

Not sure what plan we're on but I haven't changed it since moving into this house 4 years ago.
