I think @shifty` mentioned, almost all of those places don’t actually have any stock of anything, it’s all drop shipped, so maybe call if you can and see if they can physically put eyes on a part or secure it for you

Don’t think I can buy a non Toyota head unit which doesn’t have wireless CarPlay. Just doesn’t seem reasonable.

The Carlinkit 5.0 I added to my Kenwood gave me wireless AA and has been working ok. I think it offers wireless CP as well. It stutters from time to time but not a long enough stutter to loose the AA connection. Just an idea.

Well I finished another timing belt job.
I did the whole ‘timing belt job’ 2-1/2 years ago. Included the water pump and gasket, tensioner and pulley, idler pulley, thermostat and seal, water inlet o-rings, accessory belt and of course the timing belt. I had heard it was a good idea to do the cam and crank seals while the TB is off, but they weren’t leaking so I let them be.
    Don’t do that.
6 months ago I began leaking oil. It became progressively worse to the point of dropping several ounces on the ground at every stop, and THAT is why I had to do the job again so soon.
All the parts were pretty much new still, so in addition to the cam/crank seals, I planned only to replace the non-reusable WP gasket and o-rings. Alas, upon disassembly, I found that the TB already had visible cracks in it (it came in an aisin kit. I questioned it when I received it from amascam because it didn’t have timing marks on it, so took it to a Toyota stealership, and had the guy at the parts counter verify it was genuine. He claimed yes, now that’s clearly debatable.) so I bought a Gates belt this time around.
I had an afterthought about the leaking oil. I had never replaced the pcv valve and it is possible that’s why the seals were failing. I don’t know if replacing the pcv valve at an earlier date would’ve prevented the seals from leaking or not, but that’s okay. At this point, I’d rather not know.
On a positive note, now I can make myself another timing belt belt. The one I made before I’m actually still wearing, and has outlasted any leather belt I’ve worn in the past.
    IMG_1115.jpg
That and I’m no longer leaking oil of course.
so… in conclusion, I offer this PSA:
Change your gawd damn pcv valve already. It takes no tools and it’s less than ten bucks. and if/when you do the dreaded TB/WP job, replace your cam/crank seals FFS.

I too bought an Aisin TB/WP kit online a few years back that only lasted 50k before it started leaking oil and coolant. I don't recall if it was scamazon or ebay

I hear the early truck PCV mount style can suck real bad to deal with if the rubber is dried out. Did you have any issues with yours?

I so appreciate this information because in March I plan to do the same job for the same reason along with valve cover gaskets, tube seals, rear main, blah blah blah that are also leaking. The oil leak hasn’t bothered me too bad until a few days ago. Tube seal on number five is dripping onto the manifold and she looks like a chainsmoker going down the road. Thank you

The longer you wait, the drier it gets. Replace the grommet at the same time, you're good to go for another 10-15 years.

Have you checked the bolts on the valve covers? I remember one of my 5vz Tacos dripping oil on the manifolds and I could smell it on a hunting trip, while driving out to the deer stand. Turned out the valve cover bolts were loose enough that I could tighten em slightly with just my fingers. Since all my Toyotas have had leaky valve covers, I've since then tightened em up a little as a temporary fix (bandaid if you will), until replacing the valve cover gaskets.

I have not, but I will check today. Only thing is, it's not a temp fix for the tube seals.

Totally not, but it's worth checking the bolts to see if finger-tight. They're not tight-tight, like 5lbft (53lbin)

Swapped my tired gas struts on the camper shell door, probably the originals. Also swapped for a new handle with keys so I can actually lock it.

    Nice lol.

I feel like I should gut my oil filter and use it as a mug.

As usual, late to the party. Already taken. To be fair, it probably makes a better mug than an oil filter based on the branding.

What's the best tool to cut it and preserve the rolled lip? Or do you have to cut it and re-roll it? The top seems to thick for can openers.

There’s no way that was a genuine Aisin kit. Reason being is that it doesn’t come with all of those separate parts included.

I've tried to find a way to lock mine from the inside for when I'm sleeping back there on the road. I'm sure there is a way I haven't thought of yet.

Drove it today after last night’s 3” of rain and I still have a leak. Third brake light waterproofed; looking more like a windshield rust issue.

You can lock the tailgate. I'm not sure someone would want to break into an occupied camper shell. And if I was sleeping in mine I would have my (G)Lock armed. I think a strategically placed vice grip on the latch bars would create a lock of sorts that would give you time to respond.

It didn’t fall out on its own, that’s for sure. At first, it was tight enough that I thought it may have been threaded. Nope. It wasn’t horribly stuck tho. I had to do some manhandling, working it back and forth while prying it up with a blade, but had it off in just a couple minutes.
There isn’t one Aisin kit with a set list of parts. I’ve seen Aisin kits with just the belt and tensioner, or more complete kits with water pump and pulleys. Regardless, I don’t think the oem belt manufacturer is even Aisin. Mitsuboshi I think?

That’s a porcelain mug bud. The handle is made to look like a set of filter pliers. Would you really want to drink out of an old oil filter anyways? There are just so many other things to drink out of besides one of the filthiest things on the planet. Just a sayin….

No doubt. People may not know I'm sleeping back there unless they shine a flashlight. I would like a few seconds to grab said (G)Lock.

I like the vice grip idea.
