What have you done to your 2nd gen Tundra today?

Took advantage of the BF sale and sprung for these Morimoto XBs. Fog light mod is next!

 

All I did today was drive down the mountain and put traffic cones on the road on the far side of the landslide that blocked me in. Hopefully Forest Service will get a FEL out here tomorrow to clear it......

 

Setup my tailgate to open when I press unlock twice. I used this trigger output module set to #14. I has previously installed a pop-and-lock so the door lock wires were already in the tailgate, as well as the actuators to open the tailgate with a button, so this should have been pretty easy...

Except the instructions for the trigger output module were awful. They were definitely written by a Chinese programmer because they had lots of if-then statements and variables. Anyway it works now and here's a picture of the wiring mess I made while working on it.



I can open the tailgate from the cab by pressing the unlock button twice, so I don't really need another button. I can also open it from my watch in the same way.



Of course I previously added tailgate open buttons to the corners of the bed. Anyway that's the many different ways to open my tailgate and I don't know what I'll do with all the time I'm saving not pulling the mechanical latch.

Installed my cyber Monday score, bilstein 6112/5160. I bought the fronts unassembled and set them at 0.75" (lowest clip) with kyb upper strut mounts. I might be the only person who set 6112s on the lowest possible level but from a 10 min test drive so far I'm very happy. Netted 1" lift but hoping it'll settle lower.

 

the ride quality with the preload set low is super nice.


Also how did you like those spring compressors?

 

I still own a pair of the cheap style you rent from auto parts stores, the ones that bend when you look at them. Sketchy! But these shankly spring compressors are amazing. I got them to swap from 650-700lb/in springs on the white tundra and they did it no problem. Smooth and secure, no visible deflection at all. So they were of course no match for these 650lb springs with very low preload. Would highly recommend them for any truck spring.

Love that look! I had my eye on those before settling on soldering in white LED's.

 

Installed an early Christmas present, tow mirrors from Boost Auto. They should come in handy for pulling around our 26' Jayco travel trailer... when the spring comes.



Ran leads for the "reverse spotlights", but have yet to hook them up to the Cargo light switch.
I DID take the opportunity to add some extra sound deadening material to the inside of the doors. Doors sounds much more solid when closing with vigor... It makes me very happy.

 

Put a new set of Cooper Discoverer AT 265/55-20 and a front end alignment on the beast today, $1174.00 for 4 mounted/balanced. Now to give it the ultimate test: goose hunting in a muddy cornfield. I have permission to drive out into the fields, but obviously I don't want to get stuck. These should help out....

Today, I installed Weather Tech mats and GPS/Mic wires where they belong for the Kenwood DVD/Nav Radio I'll be installing soon.

Tonight, I didn't do anything to my 2008 Tundra Doublecab Limited 4x4. Well, almost:

I sat in the passenger seat while my neighbor, a young Toyota Service Technician, sat with me diagnosing the TPMS system with aid of his knowledge, skills and tools.

We were able to take our time and talk it through 'cause he wasn't on the clock: The diagnostic tool confirmed all four pressure sensors were functional and holding pressures of: 38/36/34/35 when tested. 5% drop triggers the light. 3 batteries are getting low, the left/rear is new. He confirmed the TPMS ECU was seeing all four sensors, and that it's communicating with the Antenna/Receiver. Essentially, the system was functioning properly... at first... with a few random faults reported.

But as we ran through the sequence again, and again, the ECU was consistently reporting tire pressures of 14-15 lbs in three wheels and 52 lbs in the fourth.
The repair process is procedural, of course: First, replace all pressure sensors and try again. We didn't need to do that.

We have service records since new: 133k miles and the tires have only been changed twice. It presently has it's third set of rubber on it. 2nd owner was family (2nd set was at about 57k) and last week I bought it from the third owner who put BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's on it in 04/2021 at 126k. The receipt confirms the TPMS sensors were not replaced, which is why the batteries are getting low (L/R failed, which I replaced prior to our adventure tonight).

The factory tool doesn't know if the light is on or off and it doesn't know why it's receiving incorrect pressure readings. As I understood it, the repair procedures continue by recommending ECU replacement next, perhaps because the cost of the Receiver/Antenna is higher. Receiver replacement is the last resort although it seems the most likely culprit for so many.

All considered, tonight I reset the TPMS computer and confirmed I'll need to source a Receiver/Antenna from the wrecker and plug it in. If that's also bad, we'll see about a new one. It's no emergency.

I already performed the modification in the thread by 650h1, "Disable TPMS." On that note, because my wiring solution (posted there, Pg 8) has a TPMS Defeat/Enable switch, we were also able to confirm the diagnostic tool doesn't know what's wrong when you cross the wires, except that it's not seeing the voltages / currents expected, which it considers a 'fault.' With the switch in 'Enable' mode, the tool isn't receiving correct pressures from the Receiver. Because the data is all saved in the ECU, nothing else will be needed when a 'good' receiver is eventually plugged in. Meanwhile, I have the switch at 'Disable' so I won't have to see the light.

 

Big thanks to @Danny3737. Got my climate control dual servo assembly installed. My heater and all vents work again. Total labor time was about 3 hours with a few breaks to do laundry and fill my water tank. Only issue I had was dropping one screw that fell between the carpet and floor which I had to find with my magnet as it found a gap in the insulation and went about halfway under the driver's floor carpet.
Thankfully, when I went off the mountain to get my weeks worth of shopping and maintenance done, it gave me a break in the rain also.

 

That’s awesome. Glad it went easier for you than me. Did you use the rubber band method? Did it snap right in or did you take the servo apart? Now you have an extra?2K to spend on Christmas

I guess the cargo light is a little brighter though I had upgraded the bulbs to LED. The new brake light definitely looks more modern.

I'd heard the install was a nightmare but it's not bad... Maybe 60-90 minutes if you did only the brake light replacement.

It has a feature where it flashes when you press the brake light if you have a switch flipped on, like Formula 1 or an ambulance. I don't normally want that, but I would use it during bad conditions like snow or fog, so I cut their switch out and ran a pair of wires to the dash connected to this custom "Brake Flashing" switch from ch4x4.



So now I can flash when needed.

 

I used a rubber band on the defrost lever. Worked well.
On the one that has to be pinned, I used 1.75" piece of straw split in half and tapered a bit then taped.
The only one that gave me a bit of an issue was the lever not shown in the diagram. It's for the rear floor vents if I remember right. I just set it close to where it looked like it should be based on the groove and jiggled it a bit then it all popped into place.
As for extra money, I'm using all my extra money from this and next month to pay off all bills, that way I can start dumping money into savings for a trip in 2025.
I don't have anyone to celebrate Christmas with anyways, so it doesn't need to be spent on that......

 

I’m glad we’re able to get it done without much trouble. It’s definitely one of those jobs that requires a little luck. The piece of straw was a good idea, I used a golf tee to line up the one gear.

 

Hit a milestone in the 07. Got its 5k oil change, tires were just rotated with new suspension a couple hundred miles ago. Ready for another 175k!

 

Thanks to @PhotoNerd I got a new (to me) Tesla style radio installed. Worked pretty well for me. Still working out some kinks with CarPlay, but for now it looks way more modern than what I had before. Thanks PN!!

Thanks to the photos there, and the referenced thread, it will be simple to drop the headliner in the rear... You can see the 'gap' oft complained about... easy access.

But take it easy guys! I've only owned this Tundra a week and just realized the cool mods that could happen are, well... endless.

What did I do today?

1) Determined my black 2008 Tundra 4x4 will one day be all black outside save the optional 20" wheels, and every 'red' TRD option available except... 'black chrome' TRD exhaust tips. (They were an option)

2) Sourced a replacement TPMS Receiver/Antenna from a 2008 Sienna: $5.00 at Pick-A-Part! (Yup... $5). Took me an hour to find it, only to discover how easy it is to access:
Sit in the driver seat and pull the headliner down right above the steering wheel. You can't miss it! Bring a 10mm socket: Pull the A-pillar and chase the harness down to the dash/windshield corner.
Part#: 89760-08010 (pictured).

Now, to see if it's "good"...
