What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

2 choices on blue, either it broke the bolt somewhere or the weldnut on the frame broke off.

Not sure if you could do it but maybe a holesaw through the bed around the ones that won't come out. Then you could remove the bed and work on getting them out with more room.

 

How long did it take you?

 

Induction heaters can be tricky because of the ability to get full access to the bolts to heat them up. The ones up front in the bed are especially difficult to get access to anything more than the tip of it.

 

Nah, I'm just saying, if you plan to get spray-in liner, be thoughtful about how it's applied.

If you choose a drop-in liner, make sure you clean out underneath it.

You may not need to worry about anything, given you're in the tri-state(ish) area and not farther north.

Changing the carrier bearing this afternoon. Got all the bolts out. Only problem is the dirty deeds equal length x-pipe runs right under the drive shaft, just after the bearing. So I can't take the two shafts down to the ground, at an angle, to split them, the easy way. Going to try yanking them apart, to the side. Or maybe just completely unbolt one side of the drive shaft from either the transfer case or the third member entirely.

 

well with step one being to sand the paint on the bed before spraying.... Maybe annual waxing is the best option. The plastic liner in my Taco bed is easy enough to remove 1x a year.

 

Well - you never know - he may be dumb enough to want to use the old bed to build a Matchy-Matchy Tundra trailer.

Finally got the stereo installed. It took me all day. New speakers all around. Hertz 170 components up front and hertz 130 coaxials in the back door.

I also put some sound deadening in the doors and a couple more pieces along the back wall. It’s hard to know if it made a difference, but it all sounds way better than the beat jbl stuff. I’m happy with the sound.

Alpine ILX 507 for the head. I didn’t hook up the gps antenna, which evidently means wireless CarPlay doesn’t work. I’ve got to plug the phone in for CarPlay. That’s dumb. I figured I didn’t need the gps antenna since I’m using my phone for navigation. I got lazy and didn’t want to figure out how to run it to the top of the dash. Lesson learned.

Also, I didn’t hook up the reverse camera or the parking brake. I ran out of time and motivation for both of those.
Is there a ready made parking brake cheater? Some way to trick it?

I bought everything from crutchfield, which made the wiring simple. It seems that I may have lost the ability to fade front to back, which is a bummer. There was only one set of rcas on the crutchfield harness. Without the parking brake hooked up, alpine won’t let me look at the head units settings, so I haven’t confirmed that yet.

GPS is required for wireless carplay? BAH. antenna should still work well enough under the dash right above the radio. thats how factory GPS in that era worked.

Today my truck received her final Texas state emissions inspection. Safety only from here on out Yes @JakeJake Denton County is one of those

 

I stuffed my gps antenna inside the dash on my ‘05 Tacoma. I don’t believe my Pioneer 4660 needs one though as my ‘02 Tundra doesn’t have one and I use wireless CarPlay in it.

you can ground the parking brake. That’s an easy cheat.

Mine does complain about the speed sensor not being hooked up. I need to deal with that at some point. But it doesn’t block functionality.

reverse is available from the integration relay (where your fuses are in the cab) as an external relay next to the flasher relay (good opportunity to swap the flasher with a smart tap too.). For me the wire was red with black stripe. Probably other locations to grab reverse as well.

That’s odd. 23 years before you’re exempt? I only had to wait 15 and I’m in one of the most communist states of the country. Go figure.

 

Decided to cover the gap around my third brake light with electrical tape to determine if the interior leak of the roofline above the rear view mirror is from rain penetration at that point. The onslaught of a downpour is an hour or two away so I’ll see if I need to address it to keep leaks permanently away.

I live in a state that’ll literally let me plate a tank. BUT because I’m so close to Chicago, we have emissions every 2 years for any vehicle 1976 or newer. UNLESS you get historic plates

It's actually 25 years. Which is excessive. What Mamba is saying is his inspection of his 2000 will last until Dec. 2024 and the state gives you a one month grace period, so call it Jan. 2025, at which point his Tundra will be 25 model years old and exempt from further emissions testing. Unfortunately they don't go by the build date.

 

I thought I read that its ditching the safety inspections, but going to stay the same as far as metropolitan areas and emissions inspections. So basically it changes practically nothing for a lot of us, unless some rouge counties, far from metropolitan areas, currently require emissions. As far as I know, it's only the metropolitan centers and their adjacent counties. Which is probably why you just berely skirt the emissions inspections where you are. I assume your county does not touch the county that SATX is in.

Edit: well I was wrong, your county does touch. No clue how you got so lucky.

 

I still see some white on the filter. Just needs a Texas Tune Up, aka smack the filter on the ground multiple times, to knock the crap out, then put it back on.

 

I had that same leaking spot, but it was the windshield and rust under it causing the leak

 

Also, they probably don't expect yalls cars and trucks to last 15+ years in the rust belt, let alone 25+ years

 

This is true. Texas is changing its inspection process Jan 2025. The irony in this is, as ass_hole dog said, I will be emissions exempt by the time that comes around . Being a Texas state inspector, he would know.
Texas is also going to be transitioning from a dedicated state inspection machine to a BYOD process. I don’t know the exact details of this yet, but my shop has opted in to be a beta tester for this.
