Emailed ATS about my spring "clunk" issue, and to ask if my weird intra-leaf gap is normal or not. It's on both sides so I assume it is. @rock climber had mentioned his weren't like that. I'm curious to hear what they say.

 

Interesting timing. I sold that Tundra to my nephew, but just bought it back over the weekend. I'm getting a clunk in the back I'm trying to track down.

 

I wonder if it's the diff or the CV's and then if it's aftermarket cv axles.

 

I'm texting over my videos to them.

If I get under the driver's side, behind the rear wheel, and wedge my knees up into the spare tire to lift the truck up and down, I can definitely hear and feel a 'clunk' in the leaf pack, near the axle, and a little tap/click you can actually feel in the 1st two leafs (above the overload).

 

Their support is awesome. Very responsive. He's shooting videos and pics over to the guys who are assembling the packs for input.

I can tell you 100% confidently: My clunk is specifically felt most prominently in the 2nd from the bottom leaf (red line), somewhere between in that range (yellow lines).

I suspected it's coming from the rebound clip (U-shaped clamp). But I removed its lower lock nut and loosened the other (non-nylock) nut there, clunk is still felt. Tightened it all back and loosened the top nut until that barrel was loose, still feel it. I'm suspicious though, because that lower bolt on the rebound clip, the head seems to be floating somehow inside that 2nd leaf. As in, i can run something flat between the 2nd/3rd leafs without hitting that fastener, but I can't do the same between the 1st/2nd leaf.

I tried saturating all of that shit in white lithium grease, and applied to several other spots just as a sanity check, but no change. I tried clamping all 4 leafs at the tip of the overload, but no change. Only thing I didn't do so far is whacking strategically with a BFH to see if the clunk lessens/increases, but I don't think a BFH is the key to this problem.

Open to ideas/input here...

I thought the RCD Bilsteins were for 4-6 inch lifts

 

It's what Toytec sells for our truck for the rears. I ran the part number against Bilstein's site, it jibes with what they're saying: Intended for 0-1" lift or 1-2" or something like that. I rolled with it.

Not u-bolts. Not coming from anywhere near the axle. It's definitely on the rear 1/3 of the leaf pack.

The u-bolts are longer, new, torqued to FSM spec (98lbft), and criss-cross tightened to ensure even load on the seat. And it's not coming from where the overload contacts the axle housing. I can put my hand directly on the leaf at the back side of the axle housing, and feel nothing. If I slide it 6" back, I start to feel a tapping when I lift/drop the truck. Once I get my hand between the yellow marks I feel a significant single CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK with each lift.

Based on the rest of the build, It’s probably K swapped. Gets 22mpg on 6.88’s
