Ospho isnt a miracle elixer, might wanna patch some stuff after ospho.

 

Debride it, i.e. remove the chunks. Slather (use an acid-safe brush) in CRC naval jelly. Leave on for 10-20 mins. Rinse.

If there's still any orange, repeat. If not, heat gun to dry it fully, then hit it with POR-15's self-etch primer, then top with POR-15 following their primer topcoat instructions (it's like 15-30mins topcoat window or something).

This would be my tool of choice right now when it goes on sale since I don't have a quality air compressor that grunts out 5 cfm. 1/4" wire wheel attachment to grind down all the loose rust.

It’s the new Milwaukee m18 variable speed die grinder. Supposed to put out up to 20k rpm with the equivalent power of an 11 amp corded unit.

They only have the fixed speed one on a special with a 5 amp hour battery included. It would do the job but I want the flexibility of a variable speed. Model 2984-20.

 

That’s the fixed speed one. The variable speed is $50 more and only goes to 20k rpm instead of the 27k rpm the fixed speed is listed.

Sounds like you need to torch those bolts before you try to get them out. The one that spins is either already broken or the threads are stripped. You can probably see if the bottom of the bolt spins from underneath. If it doesn’t, it’s broken.

Yeah, but it looks like it has a flapwheel installed vs. a disc.

You can get flapwheels, and even roll-lock discs for a drill and achieve similar results with a standard drill in a pinch.

You really want to use a wire wheel in place of a flap wheel so rust still remains at the surface for better adhesion of POR-15 instead of a surface ground to bare metal which is what a flap wheel will do.

 

I wouldn't use either, they're both overkill for rust that light/flaky. I'd use a steel stiff bristle brush like this to remove the rust, then naval jelly it. Anything more will do more damage to the metal than it's worth.

A wire wheel won’t damage the metal and it’ll get into the pitted metal and clean it out better and faster than a steel bristle brush done by hand. I’ve done it plenty of times and never had an issue.

 

Fellers, are 1.25 inch thick spacers enough to clear the wheel studs or do I need to grab some 1.5s? I'm gonna keep my current tires and just have them mounted on my new wheels for now. I'll grab some narrower tires down the road. No need to spend moolah on new tires right now. Thanks.
