1st Gen: Black Friday/Cyber Monday, whatcha gettin’?

I bought myself a set of underhood lights from YotaNation with the recent Black Friday pricing. My old truck had underhood lights, would like that feature on my Tundra.

 

This reminds me. I meant to look into whether or not the Taco or any of the SUVs pre-2015(ish) had switched under-hood lighting. This is also something so totally basic all my other trucks had, and I'm also disappointed without it. But I really hate reinventing the wheel, and if I can adapt something OEM that's suitable from an adjacent model, I'd love to do it. I guess on the later model Tundras they used an in-dash switch (pic), I'd prefer a contact switch/pin switch myself, something that automatically turns on with the hood opening. Matt Gecko makes a kit for the later model trucks (link)

 

I bought this kit. It's aftermarket, I emailed them beforehand to ask about 1st Gen Tundras and they said they've had a number of people install it on their 1st Gen Tundras, but don't have specific directions for it yet, but would include generic instructions. It has a contact switch that turns the light on when you open the hood. Also has a kill switch so you can turn the light off if you don't want it on.

 

I would probably prefer subbing out using a waterproof pin switch. This is potentially not waterproof, I'd prefer a rubber boot cover, but it gives you the idea. I'm not a fan of the metal switches, seen some nasty stuff with alarms using them over the years.

I've only seen Hg switchest in HVAC t-stats and can't think of any gravity switches, it's a cool idea. Any modern vehicles in mind using one or the other?

I know I'm a bit late to this convo, but you could use a door switch. I've replaced the door switches on my truck and they were completely corrosion free. I'd personally trust a Toyota OEM switch much more than something else.

A year later, I went for the same black Friday deal as you! Got them with the brackets. How are you liking them? Otd was $282 bf sale on their website. They are backordered but they still allowed the order to be placed.

 

Are these the fog lights. Iv been looking at them online.

 

I'm quite happy with them. I bought them direct from Foxbeam, but DD is selling the same kit.

Install is easy. But I'll forwarn you. DO NOT attempt to force the light+bracket into the hole. Watch Foxbeam's install video online for 'how to build'. Before you install the light+bracket into the hole in your bumper, look closely at the tabs that'll hold the light in. Notice one side remains stationary and has a hole in it, and one is on a tab that flexes a bit.

Install the bracket into the stationary one FIRST, then pivot the bracket in to catch the flexible one. Hopefully that makes sense? I did it naturally on the driver's side, but on the passenger's side, I think I tried to do it backwards and the damn bracket broke off. But he was cool about it and sent me a replacement bracket free of charge. I feel like the brackets need gussets for the two mounting ears/tabs to hold up to more abuse, but generally speaking, they've stayed aligned, and were super easy to dial in.

 

I'm continuing the process of rounding-up brake parts for a full system overhaul. Discovering some parts are obs/NLA from Toyota. It's all good, I'll make it happen.

 

Yeah, out back the adjusters are definitely NLA. But easily rebuilt, as long as the teeth are good you're golden. Wheel cylinders you can buy from Aisin. Shoes still available. Spring/hardware kits exist from multiple companies. Dorman makes a good replacement P-brake assembly but OEM is available.

Up front, I'd probably do the Powerstop S2712 as a stout-American rebuilt 13WL upgrade, get the larger 13WL Advics pad set p/n AD0976, and larger 13WL Advics 13WL rotors p/n A6F004U. That'll get you stopping like a champ up front.

I've seen a couple of people suggesting my front caliper/rotor/pad reco on the Facebook groups. Everyone with '00-'02 w/13WE that's done the upgrade so far that's reported back was very happy. Out back ... fuck man,

 

Yes, I have a feeling that this phase will easily be the most money-intensive (behind tires) since I started restoring the truck and I definitely have to make some choices outside of OEM due to NLA/obsolescence.

HINT 1: particular conversion kit (that would be for my 71 Ford 4x4 highboy) Brohon would have zero need for…especially since it’s snowing already where he’s at.

HINT 2: this particular part would also fit on my 71 ford’s 12 valve cummins engine exhaust (inline if the exhaust) and kinda rhymes with “hot takes”.

HINT 3: Anthony Ronald Brown bumpers are on sale for the 2005 Tacomas.

HINT 4: BD is having a BFD sale on ALL their leds. I wrote down on paper of what all i want, but the pencil didn’t even have enough lead in it to finish my wish list. I think i’m going to have to prune my list down a bit.

HINT 4: Ramen Noodles for the next 6 months since my wallet would be stretched so thin.

what is your use-case for these? rain, snow, fog? or do you use them whenever you drive at night? what situation do you find them most useful?

 

I’ve only used them in fog thus far. Spring and fall here we do get a fair amount of fog. They do a great job of catching road stripes. Not sure if they’d be good for ditch purposes, they don’t seem to cast wide enough IMO.
