255’s or 275’s (R17)

New guy here…Love my old truck…
So for 6 years, I’ve ran 265 70 R17 Hankook Dynapro‘s ATM’s (1 set) and overall been fairly satisfied. Time for some new shoes. Struggling with what will look, perform and fit the best. Bilstein 5100’s all around and set at, I believe, second from the top notch up front…it’s levelled the truck nice, anyway. I live where we get a full winter season every year so pizza cutters do interest me.
I have narrowed the finalists down to these:

255 75 R17 - BFG K02’s or Firestone Destination XT’s or GY Duratracs

255 80 R17 - Falken Wildpeak AT3W

275 70 R17 - BFG K02’s or Firestone Destination XT’s or GY Duratracs

I am wondering if I would have fitment issues with the 255 80’s or with the 275’s or if there are any other issues worth mentioning with these choices?

These are going on stock, aluminum, “5 spokes” that came with the truck.

255/75/17 will fit best and has lots of options. around 32" tall. I have 255/80/17 and it rubs a little with a 2" lift on the inside of the plastic on the fender wall. Not a huge deal only does it rarely. but... you're mostly stuck with e-rated tires in this size. 255/75 will have more options. specifically, the cooper at3 are a great tire. My current tire is a 255/80 toyo open country and it's been really good, just a little stiff since it's e-rated. i have a 400lb camper i'm dropping onto the back of my truck in a few months so this might end up being perfect for me.

 

255 is mo' betta. 275's are paying tax they dont need to. Get a reliable air gauge & air down if necessary. Pump back up to get back on the road.

Could probably get away with 235/85 & not lose much clearance.



skids & sliders are the name of the game around here, but its not mud or sand, its rocks, and thats gonna tear up tires, so you want em to be cheap.

 

You'll end up with about 10-12 different opinions on this subject. I'll throw my 2 cents in. I'm running 285/75R16 with 1" spacer on starfish with no rub. With a 17", I agree with dirtnsmores that 255/75 is you best option. They will be nearly just as tall as these, but narrower.

Interesting, thanks fellas. Would you be surprised to hear I’m trying to justify the 255 80’s? It would be nice to give it a new look and gain that extra bit of clearance. having said that, I’m too old not to be practical, haha.

I'll vote for the 255/80R17 if your lift can fit the tire (I have about 1.6" lift), been happy with the results (I have Toyo RT Trail but the Wildpeak AT3 was second choice). Posted details here and used the thread linked on my post to help me finalize my decision:

1stGtundrs06 that’s great man, thank you. I read some of that a month ago and it’s all a blur now B/c of all the second guessing, but definitely leaning to the 255 80’s.
Anybody ever say how the Wildpeaks do in that size?

I think it's a fine choice but given what others said about them, make sure your shop can road-force balance them.

My 255/80s. Love them, but might go down to 75 next time around

 

I’m on the other side of the fence. I’ll only run oversized tires on my dedicated offroad trucks. Everything else stays stock. If your winters are bad enough, then definitely toss on some taller tires to punch through the 24” of snow. If you just want a different look of having an oversized tire, go for it and be prepared to have worse fuel economy, accelerated wear on steering and suspension components, and a have X amount of torque and horsepower that gets swapped from the engine and transmission. I’m not judging anyone who installs larger tires, i’m just letting you know the repercussions of installing larger tires.

I have 245/70-16 tires on my truck all last winter. It was carrying me just fine though “most” all the unplowed roads that lead to me house.


*”most” ...so there were a particular 100’ long snow drift that i did temporarily get stuck in, but it was over hood high and i didn’t have quite enough momentum. A shovel helped me out in that one.

 

I'm running 275/70/R17 Falken Wildpeaks and they're perfect. No rub at all and the proportion looks perfect IMO.

I looked em up. They're around 57lbs. I'm still happy with my 255 Toyos at 51lbs. That's light for a load range e 33" all terrain

 

The wildpeaks are growing in popularity very quickly. Subaru is using them OEM on all of the wilderness trim levels

 

Yeah and they look great.

Pretty sure I’ll be running 255/80s when that time comes. Less choices than a 285/70 but less weight and a true 33” tire.
