OEM buy it from Toyota. Don't kill your truck with crap parts for critical components. And, for really critical parts that will kill your truck if they fail, don't buy from eBay, Amazon, or WalMart online... too many counterfeits.

A lot of parts you can buy cheap from any place, any manufacturer. This one, I'd come up with the money for OEM.

For what it's job is, that doesn't sound that bad to me. It's also not an easy to access or perform procedure. Failure could be catastrophic. I would not cheap out on the timing belt for my 2UZ, and I would not cheap out on this.

That would be the aftermarket price.I have a Toyota dealer parts list with prices and wow what a ripoff.I can go to AutoNation for less than half the cost of what the dealers estimate was.Dealer quoted $ 4536.35 just parts.I guess that's why we don't go there.

love to see a parts list for a timing chain swap that was $4500. Can’t imagine which part(s) would cost enough to add up to that.

Their you have it, unbelievable. This is only parts. They also put in new vvt gears which I would't need. But this is what happens when you go to the dealer. As an example on the first page are gaskets for $ 31.32 dealer and my price $ 4.19 for all of them from Auto Nation.

That's a complete timing system overhaul! Gears and everything. Crazy. I think most would replace the chain, tensioner and guides.

I don’t think the solution for them trying to rip you off is for you to use inferior parts. Buy the chain parts from wherever you’d like but if it were me I’d only use OEM. Why are we changing the timing chain anyhow? The chains typically last the life of the engine. If you’re experiencing chain slap on cold start that’s usually a guide/tensioner issue.

The engine has 230k on it and when I look down the oil fill hole I can see the tensioner exposing about 1/16 shiny shafting meaning about one chainlink stretch.I could also wait until I get a code for chain stretch but while I am in there I will change the chain and tensioners. The guides I will have to look at ones I am in there.

If you don’t have a code there is no chance the chain stretched that much. You’d be getting out of sync codes like crazy.

My guess is the tensioner is sludged to the point it doesn’t keep the chain tight enough. Do you know the history on oil change interval? Do you hear chain slap on start-up or is this whole problem just what a tech told you?

I have the diesel effect after start-up but goes away once engine is hot.For all I know at this point is that mabee a driver side tensioner is good enough at this point.I have no records on this vehicle in regard to oil changes and it came from a dealer. All I know is the vehicle is spotless in and out assuming the PO took good care of it.From what I can see looking down the oil fill hole the inside looks really clean like PO changed oil at regular intervals.I used Mystery oil also did an engine flush with BG 106 hoping for the tensioner would degum but to no avail.Next oil change I will do a Liqui Moly flush.People seem to get good results from that stuff.

Have you tried running a thicker oil? I’d get a noisy clattering valve train on cold starts running 0-20.

I switch to 5-30 and it didn't make much of a difference.I don't have valve noise.
