Question about TRD sticker

Just bought a 2000 Limited AC 4WD. Did a thorough pre-purchase and everything looked great, extensive maintenance records, good asking price, etc. My only question is about the TRD decal (see picture; apologies for the reflection). I'm pretty sure it's fake. The only time I've seen this particular decal--with the mountains--is on ebay/etsy and on two vehicles (3nd gen 4Runner and an early 100 series LC) where I knew it was fake due to placement (on the window). Plus it looks rather low quality, with the cracking and fuzzy lettering. That being said, on my truck the placement is on both sides and very even, so if it is aftermarket whoever applied it did a good job.

I'm not worried about having been duped by the seller, as, 1) it wasn't advertised as TRD; 2) I didn't pay TRD prices; 3) the TRD badging doesn't interest me for this year/model (obviously with a newer Tacoma the addition of the locking rear diff would be a selling point, but my understanding is w/the 2000 Tundra the TRD package didn't add that). I'm mainly interested just because it's bugging me not knowing, and I honestly would feel kind of silly driving around with an aftermarket badge that is incongruous to the actual trim of the truck. I know people do that with Tacomas all the time (both unscrupulous sellers trying to jack prices up and owners who just want the badging...for prestige? I don't really understand the thinking behind the latter).

I've spent quite some time looking for a history of TRD badges and logos/decals but haven't found anything which could confidently answer my question. If anybody knows for sure if this particular logo is legitimate, I'd appreciate it. I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before on the forums. Also I hope I didn't step on anybody's toes if they do like aftermarket TRD decals on non-TRD vehicles.

 

Looks legit to me, but that was 21 years ago when I bought mine. You get off-road Toyota shocks (blue/yellow rebadged Bilsteins) and progressive rate front springs. Also flared colored match fender flares I believe with the limited.

LSD was a separate option.

 

Just based on how much it's cracking up, I'm fairly certain it's not OEM. But it's also possible the truck was in an accident at some point and the bed was replaced.

What makes you think it didn't have the TRD package? Did you look up the build specs//packages at the Toyota Owners website? Do you know the TRD options for its production year, and there's something specific missing?

A lot of that info is in the megathread, specifically in the links in the 4th or 5th paragraph. So is info on signing up for the Toyota Owners site, where you can pull your build sheet, though it's not always 100% correct. (Toyota Support will get you that info if you request it)

 

Same here sorta...my factory config included "Off Road Package", there was no sticker, or evidence thereof. So I added one. I'm not sure if I like it.

Go to the Toyota/owners website and put in your VIN #, it will tell you about your Tundra.

As others stated TRD package in 2000 was pretty much different shocks.
These days I think it might be 18" wheels instead of 20., maybe a different skid plate.

My TSS package on my 2014 is nothing but cosmetic nothingness.
The only thing I have left is the TSS wheels.
I removed the TSS bed decal the day I brought it home..



I'd suggest you take a 3M eraser wheel to that decal and remove it.
Hopefully, the paint underneath won't have a ghost emblem on it.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! @ Shifty--I did sign up and register my VIN on Toyota website, but the vehicle specification page doesn't load. It's weird because my dashboard shows up with the Tundra and VIN, but when I click on Vehicle Specification it prompts me to enter my VIN again and then doesn't do anything. I've sent an email to support about it. I also wasn't sure if the TRD package would be listed along with the trim or not on any specifications page, because as far as I can tell w/the first gens the only grades coded with the VIN are STD/SR5/LTD. I did not know that Toyota support could actually help me get more info, so thanks for the tip!

@1lowlife--I got the Tundra at 200k, and it has new shocks (along with a lot of other components, so I couldn't use that to tell.

One of our Canuckistani members did just what you did IIRC, and emailed for support because they weren't getting full info, and they sent over the info (build sheet), I think in PDF format. Apparently the Canadian trucks like his don't load or show worthwhile info. I forget, like so many things. Only so many brain cells in between these ears and I'm pretty sure they're having an uncivil war.

There is also a website someone on here found that will basically dig up all the info on your truck and basically recreate the original window sticker for your truck. I thought it was a gimmick 'til I saw the sticker. It's legit.

 

@Shifty Good to know I'm not the only one who's had that problem with the Toyota website...always paranoid I'm missing something obvious whenever technology doesn't work for me. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the other website as well.

 

Yeah I wasn’t a fan of the decals
I had a guy hit my right side rear bumper which curled up into the quarter panel. Body shop had a replacement decal as part of the quote and I asked if they would just remove the left decal which they did. Looks better without even though there is a faint shadow on the paint.

 

That’s not the factory decal, someone added that at some point

 

Post up some pics of the rest of the truck. Fender flares will usually tell what's up with TRD package.

 

Hope this picture works. I can take a close up of the flares if needed.

I want to revisit questions asked earlier but maybe missed the responses, maybe ask in a different way:

Do you know what the TRD options are for your model year, and are you missing some of those options? (earlier models, the options were virtually none, IIRC)

Did you pay extra because it's supposedly got "TRD" package? Like, was that a selling point?

If "yes" on that last question, did you not research in advance so you could ensure you weren't getting duped?

I guess it just seems weird to me if, for example, the only thing offered for TRD package on your year was upgraded shocks and slightly different flares, who gives a damn? Most people replace within 100k-150k miles anyway, or we upgrade.

 

@Shifty yeah the weights were the first thing I noticed too . To answer your questions (sorry if I wasn't clear earlier): 1) As to options for my model year: my understanding is that for the 2000 First Gen Tundra the only TRD upgrade were the shocks and tires, which have been changed on mine, so I couldn't use those to check. Other replies on this thread seem to concur with this. I actually had a very hard time finding a reliable source online that would list the different options and what they entailed for the 2000 first gen Tundras (I think a TRD supercharger was available on the V6?). 2) I did not pay extra, nor was the Tundra advertised as TRD. I purchased this particular Tundra because of the condition/maintenance records and price.

Sorry if it seems like I'm obsessing over the decal; I'm not super concerned about it, it's just something that interests me. I have friends who are graphic designers and after hearing about all the work that goes into decal design and placement and marketing I've been interested in the whole culture around them. Some of the guys I know who drive Tacomas will scoff at anything that's not TRD, but (when buying used @ 100k miles+) you could get an SR5 for 10k less and install a rear diff locker for, what, 1.5k? and have pretty much the same truck, mechanically. But those three letters go a long way in bumping up the value. Not that I'm against TRD or trims or anything, I'm just on a budget, so maximizing my value and getting the most mechanical bang for my buck was top priority, and you can't really beat the 2UZfe. Who knows, if I was rich I might've bought a new TRD model just for the bragging rights

 

Ok, this seems to make more sense. My takeaway from your 1st post was askew: I thought you were upset because someone sold you on "TRD" here, or upsold you on TRD somehow.

The best bang vs. buck you're going to get with these trucks is no frame rust, no wreck, now aftermarket lower balljoints, and the timing belt/water pump/tensioners/pulley job was done properly within the last OEM recommended 9yr [or] 90k mile window. How you proceed will say a lot too. If you haven't hit this thread to get a headstart on laying out plans, it may help with drawing up some goals?

Appreciate the link to the flare thread! And I've been reading the megathread. The truck's had excellent maintenance records except, oddly enough, no indication of the timing belt ever having been changed. I got 1k off the price for that, and am not driving it until I get a new one in. I'm guessing it's been changed at some point, but I'm not going to assume with something that important.
