13WL Brake Upgrade

The greens on the Tacoma have been more than enough to launch you into the windshield if you salmon the brakes. They’ll likely work fine for you

 

I have the same issue with my track car in deciding what pads. I always said manufacturing should sell a pad that's half the thickness to sample try them.

Seems like the WL13 is the caliper to sick with. I remember my 2000 had the WE calipers and warped rotors.

This lexus wa brake reports are all over the place. Will make notes for if I ever find a fgt.

I mean, the suspension is 20 year old crap right now but steering and brakes are tight as F. Fully satisfied on those fronts.

 

Can you explain what "trim the dust shield" means? Is it to cut down its diameter or extent? And why?... because it impacts the caliper?

 

Think about a pie. You gotta take a slice out of the pie, where it would otherwise smack into the caliper.

 

Thanks.... To be a pest... Since I don't have the tools, I have to find a mechanic or shop to do that -? How'd you do it? And how come no one else mentioned this?

 

It’s thin gauge metal. You can trim it with any metal cutting tool. A grinder, cutoff wheel, heavy duty snips, vibrating multi-tool etc. Take the old caliper off. Take the old rotor off. Put the new rotor on, mock the new caliper up. You’ll see where the shield makes contact with the new caliper (it’s slightly larger). Mark the shield cut line with the caliper mocked up. Remove the caliper and trim the shield with any of the above mentioned methods. Re-fit the caliper. Trim additional as necessary.

It's such a small, insignificant detail that should be expected when doing an unintended upgrade like this.

But now you mention it, I'm wondering if the backing plate from a later-year model ('03+?) isn't just a bolt-on affair, for those who want a true bolt-on experience.

 

I don't see why not. They didn't change the spindles till they did the LBJ upgrade in 05-06 so they should fit.

 

Yeah, but if a mod doesn't involve welding, cutting, grinding, or fabbing of some kind, is it really a mod? Maybe, but what a boring world it would be.... Guess if you're a rust belt resident the backing plates may need a refresh anyway.

 

That was my initial thought. Leaving open steel behind, you're bound to rust anyway unless in a low-humidity, low-water, no-corrosion area. And anyone rust belt may need it already, some of the ppl I see from the rust belt have dust shields that look like a piece of paper left in an attic full of silverfish.

But "mod" drawn out is "modification", and you are technically modifying the braking system ... In an OEM+ kinda way.

 

Cut lines on mine. Not perfect, doesn’t really have to be.

 

I have an 04, and the backing plate is indeed bolt on...AFTER you press out the hub! 13WL is the stock caliper for 04.

 

Phm brought up the fact that the pad contact patch is the same size at best, and the chamfer on the wl pads means the contact patch is smaller for ?half? The life of the pad.

I had none of those tools so I "trimmed" mine with a pair of pliers by bending it back and forth repeatedly until it broke off. Looks like shit but it worked.

 

Damn G, I have an extra corded Dremel rotary I found in a drawer at work a couple years back if you need something to cut small ass stuff like that

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I just upgraded my brakes to the gx460 calipers and rotors with crown stainless lines. I got everything from Geoffrey beers over on the FB page Firstgentundras. He owns agility customs and also is the one who custom made my dual battery setup and wiring upgrade.

 

Did mine the other day with a hack saw. Which makes it a hack job. And me a hack, I suppose. Truck stops though, waiting for the brakes to bed before I render a final opinion. I like the red powerstop calipers though, funny how new brakes make the truck faster..

Hey i got the same kit. Everything looks good and beefy. I did opt for hd pads. How are you liking kit now after some time. I used to always stay w stock rotor and caliper but just mess w trying new pads and fluid when I tracked cars.

 

Planning to trim with something like this the fold bad to get rid of cut hazard

 

They've worked pretty good so far. My rears are all out of whack so they wore pretty quick.
