New comer here needing help with my diff in 04 4x4 tundra with the lsd . I just swapped with a carrier from a junkyard rear. This is my first time doing this. All went well with the swap. I filled with 80w 90 to test it out and planned to fill again after running for few miles to flush out the housing.
All went great for half mile and I did a u turn and then mashed about half throttle to make it down shift and it just sounded like it slipped out of gear. The truck rolled into my driveway making a clicking sound like when a Manuel transmission slips out of gear and is barly rubbing.
I checked the driveshaft and it is spinning freely with the wheels on the ground.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for any replies I get!

Yup, your rear end has come apart. You didn’t say why you needed to swap in the first place. You didn’t say if you swapped in another LSD or open diff. You didn’t say what the donor rear came out of. Several variations of the rear end available in the various Tundra configurations. Gonna have to take the third member back out and inspect the carnage. Something is no longer allowing the pinion, ring gear and spider gears / LSD to mesh together.

You also failed to give any info about your truck. How are we supposed to help you if you can't tell us:
    • Year?
    • Cab type?
    • Engine?
    • 2WD or 4WD?
    • Auto or manual trans?
There are a wild array of differences between these trucks just based on that info alone, we could be stabbing at guesses all night

04 crew cab v8 4x4. I recently acquired the truck and within 300 miles the rear end locked up. I think it was run dry. I replaced the lsd with another lsd. 410 gears. I believed my problem maybe I failed to get every chunk of metal out of the housing. The new rear end is from another tundra . Not sure of year.

Do you also have 4.10 gears up front? Gear ratios need to match front and rear on 4wd.

Although what you said is certainly feasible also.

I mean, if all of a sudden that the driveshaft is spinning easily while both tires are still on the ground, i would think it would either be a broken axle shaft or your pinion yoke has snapped.

Short story: Years ago i was offroad (eastern Oregon) out cutting firewood in my ol' 1971 F250 flatbed one weekend. I had had the bed completely brim full of wood. While on my way back to the pavement i was backing up and my rear diff hit smack dab center on a very large rock. It smashed the large drain plug off the back of the diff cover...or so i though. I temporarily plugged the hole with a rag. I limped about 5 miles to a friend's shop. I removed the diff cover and drained all the oil. I searched all over inside the housing with a flashlight and a magnet to make sure the plug wasn't in there. I didn't see a thing after about 10 minutes of looking. I drove the truck 10 miles home. About 2 months later i had about 3 tons of scrap metal in the back of the truck. I was driving down a steep hill and BOOOOOM!!! The rear tires locked up and skidded for a split second! I just about pooed myself. I kinda figured what it was right off the bat. I turned around and drove right back home, pulled the diff cover, drained the oil, and found a severly mangled drain plug that somehow managed to make it though all the spider gears (on the Dana 60 axle). It did crack the carrier case, but still worked, so i kept driving the truck like that for the next few years. I eventually swapped in a D70 with a Detroit No-Spin.

My point being it that large metal pieces in the axle make loud sounds when they break. I'm really wondering exactly what it could be if there were no loud breaking sounds. Definitely keep us posted!

Update: I installed the new axles that came with the junk yard rear end and they were short. Barely caught splines then stripped. Installed old axles and good to go!

Always awesome to see - just heed the note, if this is 4WD, don't engage 4WD unless you also updated gears in the front to match the rear (I think stock was 3.9-something?) or you may have some other fun surprises waiting :D

Oh, and make sure that diff breather on the new axle is good, else you may find your seals blowing out before long.

Actually I did the rear end myself because I took it first to a shop that misdiagnosed and replaced the front diff . I couldn’t afford to pay anyone to do rear so I did myself.

I get it, trying to find a reasonable wrench in the ATL area is like a needle in a haystack. Especially with more-specialty stuff like that. I'd probably do same as you.

But knowing it's either (A) find matching ratio rear, or (B) I'm stuck doing the front and rear, and I have zero experience with a front diff! And compatible trucks around ATL are not in long supply. I actually use 4WD, don't want to grenade anything with a mismatch.

(Edit: I dunno why I had it stuck in my head you threw 4.10 gears in the rear... Must be all the heroin I've been shooting, while smoking crack, and buttstuffing meth )

Might be access/regular cab axles vs double cab.... double cab are longer.

Center/3rd is interchangeable with the caveat the pinion flange may or may not need to be swapped.

I was told mine had 4:10s from factory according to the vin. Either way I replaced the front and rear from the same donor vehicle. I thought they came from a tundra but may have come out of a sequoia due to the axles being shorter and the 4:10 ratio.
