Has anyone gone through the process to get Toyota to disable this tracking? Seems odd it says to hit the SOS button to disable.

I also went to the site listed and it's quite comprehensive. Any suggestions?

Yes I am also aware that even if I ask them to disable that there is a chance they are still capturing data. But at least I have the documentation.

If you go on the app there is simple stuff like current mileage, current location, open window and door alerts, then it gets pretty complex if you look at the driving habits tab. You'll see every trip you've ever taken and details about every trip like speed, hard braking, hard cornering, idle times, quick accelerations. It also scans the trucks ecu and will post any warning lights you may have on so if you're under warranty and you go in for a check engine light they could refuse you based on what conditions you have put the vehicle though or even how long it took you to come in after the light came on. I doubt any of that stuff can be shut off fully.

So what technology is transmitting that data? I mean that stuff doesn't magically leap from truck to cloud. Is it the connected services trial?

Its inescapable with vehicles moving forward. I just dont want the data transmitted to Toyota. But I understand them needing it for an event based situation if its stored locally on the vehicle.

I never signed up for connected services. I just declined from the get go but I am sure something is transmitting it through the XM antennae I suspect or perhaps when you connect to wifi.

There are bit more privacy settings within app under the account:

1- Once within the Toyota app, click on the little person icon (next to the VIN) on the top right of the screen.
2- Click on Account (under your name)
3- Data Privacy Portal (towards the bottom)

You can control additional privacy settings on this Data Privacy Portal page.

"Connected Master Data Consent" seems to have the most services like remote start, lock/unlock, service connect and safety connect etc. (CAUTION: As mentioned above, please carefully review the details, before making any changes).

Hi all. Just new to this forum. Recently bought a 2021 Tundra. Very interested in disabling all data communications from the vehicle.

    1. Can somebody provide a link to the Toyota app mentioned above?
    2. I'm not sure I trust it. Is there documentation on how to really truly no-kidding disable all data transmission? Including pulling connectors or cutting wires?

    Thanks in advance. . .

    just disconnect shark antenna

Toyota is horrible with data. If you tell me your vin I can tell you where you been, all your service records, all your check engine lights etc. They are this bad! And no , I'm not a hacker, I am below average with computers and still can get all of this info only if I get vin number . Toyota sucks with data!

Thanks. I'll look a little deeper, but a quick look convinces me that I really don't trust it.
    Yep :(

I've seen hints of some people in the hot-rodding community going after car computers, but I don't think there's much there yet. For now, I'll be happy if I can just shut down data communications which I haven't authorized.

Ah, interesting, I hadn't seen that one. Thanks. I'll see about pulling that stuff down today.

But it doesn't alter my basic goal. From my POV nobody has a right to any of that data. I want to stop it from being transmitted.

Search the wiring diagrams and look for the module mentioning LTE. It'll obviously have a coax connection to an antenna. Disconnect it and see if the truck throws some codes. If it does, then only disconnect the coax connection as the LTE module on the PCB won't have enough signal to ever make a connection with the towers. If you really want to hammer it home, also wrap it in Faraday fabric.

Won’t matter what you do, they can still track you. People don’t want to share any of their “data” but want all the free apps. Nothing is free. You are being tracked and listened too. I know for a fact that both I and everyone else on this planet couldn’t give two shits about what I do or where I go. Track away.

I agree with the sentiment but you're wrong with the technical. Yeah, the guy is obviously still going to be tracked by his phone, but removing the comm source from the truck will make the truck go dark. I've built data acquisition devices with LTE...

This assumes there's no remote tethering happening through his phone (this would require consent and installing an app) and that 3rd gens don't support mesh networks similar to all of the current tag devices. Another technique is bulk uploads with WiFi, but if you haven't connected the truck to your home network, then that path will also be disabled. There are only so many ways to TxRx telematics/DAQ devices.

So to help my understanding, if you haven't connected the truck to the Toyota app, it can still transmit data via android auto or through the telematics/SOS to toyota?

Toyota is installing telematics, same as all other OEs. This module has a radio exactly like your phone which is communicating through cell towers to their servers. Just to be clear, basically any piece of current machinery/vehicle/equipment does this. The components are cheap and the processing power to operate them can be handled with a $1 microcontroller. The only real cost is in transmission ($/MB).

I don't read the fine print, but Android Auto is only supposed to offer phone services on the vehicle screen - either wired or wirelessly. I doubt any on-board data is finding a backdoor through this path.

Just drop the rear microphone in the roof and there is a pink/black connector to the sharkfin behind. It runs the radios, LTE connected services, Nav & XM.

I have disabled this function successfully in my past vehicles ( Ford, Chevy) by removing the fuse associated with the wireless transmission module for Cellular service…. Just have to figure out what fuse, should not be an issue. Once you have located the power source, when you try pressing the “SOS” button, you’ll get a message saying the vehicle cannot connect & a number to call, that’s when you know you’re good to go

There should be a SIM card somewhere on the vehicle, pull the card and no more tracking. That is unless they are using an e-SIM. I just checked AllData and Mitchell1 and neither mention a SIM card. Without a Toyota tech to verify, it'll be pretty hard, also for anyone willing to go take apart their infotainment unit, the process is vast, it calls for 7 hours to remove it because most of the dash needs to come off.
