Took the old man to MD Anderson today in the best gen. When we got back I installed the Easylift for him. He’s been complaining about the weight of it when he’s holding the dog leash with one hand. I drilled the hole a little lower as suggested and it has plenty of help to it. I think it slows it down when dropping it as well. Best I could do for pictures:

Not sure if this will stick or not, but about searching the FSM for data ...

FSM is broken up into sections which are tagged XX-# or XX-## where XX is a pair of letters referring to a specific section (DI = "DIagnostics", SA = "Suspension & Axle", BR = "BRakes", MT = "Manual Transmission", AT = "Auto Transmission", TR = "TRansfer case", etc.), and the # is just sequential numbers, the letters and numbers are always be separated by a dash.

The fastest way I've found to get to the info you need, and how I found the info you needed in like 15 seconds... I was fortunate enough to remember that "SA-" would be the section I'd find it in. Thing is, that section goes from like SA-1 up to like SA-150-something. So here's what I do.

I know it's in suspension. So use search up/get to section "SA-1"
Once I'm in SA-1, I know I'm in the ballpark, so I just need to find the exploded with info I want.
I knew you were hunting rear diff info, so while sitting on the first page of SA-1, I searched "rear diff" and it jumps you right to the rear differential parts way down around SA-100.
From there, I just tapped 'next' to find the next instances of 'rear diff' and had the torque specs within 3 taps.

This works for just about everything in there, but sometimes you gotta be particular about what you pic for your term to hone in once you're in the ballpark section.

I know you're in TX and it's basically patina for y'all, but I'd be hard pressed not to smear some naval jelly on that rust patch for 10-15 minutes, then rinse and mist it with some rattle can.

I'll be curious to hear how you're feeling about the tailgate assist after using it a bit. Curious, if you remove the tailgate, do you also need to uninstall the assist mech?

yeah, I’ll clean it up when I pull the bed. You would have to remove the easylift to get the tailgate off. I like it for my dad, and it works. I think it’s too primitive for you though, and you won’t like the way it functions mechanically.

I just installed this a few days ago. Huge difference. My kids can now put the tailgate up with little effort. Install was about a half an hour just because I took my time with the holes and the measurements.

Westin bed mat finally arrived. Perfect fit for my double cab! Smells terrible. Need to let it air out before I put the tonneau cover back on

I’d say 30 minutes is accurate, with two kids wrecking hell on me and my dad giving me an ear lashing.

I appreciate the honesty. I remove my tailgate several times a year to unload dirt/mulch to keep up with garden (grown food) and landscape crap. I've been mulling over something, but I'd personally prefer soft-open vs. easy close. Nothing drives me nuts more than tailgate slamming open. I had suspicions whether I'd like it.

That dent above the rear window - should pop out pretty easy with suction. YouTube search for dildo dent repair (not pranking you here) and you'll see. I've now done this on a few different vehicles and found it helps if you clean the metal thoroughly, then heat the sheet metal a lil bit before you slap your suction device on it.

Usually gets the dent 95% or better out if there are no creases, one of my couple pulls was 100% and my neighbor was ecstatic.

Required. Have to choose based on shaft diameter to grip circumference ratio. Too much girth is hard to hold. The more texture it has the grippier it is. The key is repeated quick forceful pulls until it “pops”. Warming it up certainly helps. May have to message the area after to smooth it out.

the assist mech is only a single bar. that's it. nothing else. no nuts, no bolts. just the bar. pretty awesome and genius design in my opinion. I got my tailgate off pretty easily once you learn to rotate the tailgate as you're removing it. I wouldn't mind doing it once a month if i had to. putting it on is much harder than removing. coming down it's a billion times lighter, so it's super easy to guide it down with a finger. No way it'll slam down unless you don't keep your hand there. I dropped the tailgate of my tacoma today and it felt MUCH heavier than my tundra's tailgate after the EasyLift install.

FWIW, my friend who did the bracket for Taco 3rd gen tailgate dampener on 2nd gen tailgate said the Tundra won’t be possible given how things look. But he is doing an anti theft bracket and @assassin10000 has one I think.

It’s a bummer since the 2nd gen Taco tailgate is super light (too light) and the Tundra w MH too heavy.

I’m likely going to remove my MH for now I think. Haven’t decided on the torsion bar yet. Also need to cut and crimp a connector for the camera so I can remove the tailgate if I want to. But I might also just do the anti theft bracket and leave the tailgate permanently on.

Tempted to swap to a custom flatbed in the 2nd gen Tacoma so I’ll have tray space for batteries for EV conversion. That’s the 5 year plan. It’d be nice to have one flatbed, they can be useful. Maybe some fold down / removable sides too.
