Air Intake Tube Alternative

Finally got around to building my version on the TRD intake on a budget. I will say that the air seems a lot less confused as to what direction it is supposed to flow. Not much for gains as expected but the slight whistle I had from the K&N drop in filter went away completely. It was replaced with a sort of growl at the 3500-4000 rpm range. I really like the new sound and breaking necks at the dead stop takeoff.

I returned the 4” ID hose for this one. It’s tight but didn’t have to trim length at all. The 4” was too sloppy for me

I went ahead with the TRD tubes and bellows. Picked up the PCV tube at AutoZone. What I noticed is that the tube coming out of of the box is what is too long. It hits the first bellow. At first, I thought it was the top notch since the bellows came up short to the lower one but after squeezing it, I realized this. Someone else noted the bellows seemed too large for the box - but the clamp sealed it down well. As of now it all works but it does look to be pushing the top of air box back about a 1/4". No issue yet, but I may trim that down if needed. I like the red look and didn't want to mix up the tubes.

 

Another Question - Does the SABM actually do anything? I see that it increases air flow due to 2 holes... I was just going to throw in a better air filter and call it a day...

 

Look, to each his own but, unless you just want pretty colors in your engine compartment your wasting money.
Go check out the filters available and find one that passes a little more air.
Tubes that are colored don't mean squat. The smoother the air flow the better the air flow so unless you have some specific reason to need bellows, stay away and go smooth bore.

 

I don't really care about the fancy colored tubes but the simplicity of install. The first half of the TB to 45 degree to straight tube is what I would recommend buying since its pretty much plug n play. There's some mods for the bellows - and along with your point of smoother air, I agree, this is prolly a better item bought off Amazon or the silicone intakes link you provided. I might try the straight tube and offload the bellows here.

Any thoughts on the SABM? I think its a waste of time but interested in others experience.

 

Where I picked up throttle response, mileage and seat of the pants HP was not the intake / filter box system on my WS6 but, the change to ported / polished MAF ends.
Maybe the combo of all of them as the MAF ends came last for me.
I would start at the MAF itself then do the intake filter.
Stock injectors can handle these mods no problem.
A pedal commander or chip set added to these mods should take care of 90% of the drivers looking just a little more with better mileage.
After this, I'd do exhaust like the DD set up with a 12 incher (my choice for the Tundra)
Should have a very good performing motor that up ticks the mileage thing.
Anything after that better have a MOFO blower or Turbo being shoehorned in.....

Getting ready to do this and only question I have is what to use to extend the PCV hose - I didn't think the $70ish price tag was reasonable for that. Can I use some standard 3/8" id fuel line that I already have? Do I need to buy a 3/8" id coupler? The extension in the post below is what I am looking at.

 

15/32. You can get 2 ft of it for like $4. Only need about 12 inches though. Just run it from the crankcase to the intake tube

Got this done today. Ordered the intake coupler, bellows, tube, TRD filter, and airflow accelerator from Sparks. Used some simple 1/2” ID rubber fuel hose in place of the PCV piece.

Definitely a throatier growl with the resonator gone! As for noticeable gains - maybe better acceleration, but probably just me hoping.

 

I just switched from a KN cone filter and intake to a stock box with kn filter because the drone of daily driving was just getting to be lame.

What is it that the resonator does exactly?

i have this AFE kit but pulled it after thinking about the pop rivets used on the AFE badge. Not sure why they chose to use that type of fastener. I didn’t feel good about the stem dislodging from rivet and going right through the throttle body.

 

I always had that thought too with mine ! Never had an issue though. Could dab a small dot of JB Weld on them for peace of mind.

 

Would you happen to have you AFE still? I’ll take it off your hands.

Thanks all for the info. @Shanet421 was the main person who I mimic'd so thanks for all your details and Amazon parts lists. I didn't like the clamps that came with the boots so I bought some from the hardware store. All in, happy with this mod and the price is a lot cheaper than paying Toyota for the TRD kit. I still don't know the correct way to cut the boots, all I can say is take your time and give yourself room to correct. I did take this as an opportunity to paint my intake cover (engine cover had been painted previously) and really enjoy the pops of blue under my hood

lol gold wrap.. But for the stock box, nice drop dry filter, TRD accelerator, SABM, Nice smooth couplers, maybe that K&N tube. But not much gains here. Definitely the dry highflow filter and SABM are worth it.

Older thread, I know… but did anyone come up with what combination of parts would work best for the 2021 tundra? I see in this thread that they changed the air box around 2020 sometime, and I’m just looking to basically get rid of the resonator, so did any of the 2020/2021 guys find a combination of parts that fit, sealed and worked well together?

 

I'm close. Just need to actually have time to finish the install.
