    Hello,
I have a 2005 tundra 4.7 dbl cab rwd at about 287000 miles
It blew 2 rods on the hwy going about 70 mph it blew two holes clean out of the bottom of the block hot oil was everywhere sounded and felt like it got shot by .50 cal with all the smoke crazy lucky i was able to pull off to the side safely .

Now it’s been sitting a bit and clearly I need a new block / complete engine .
im honestly having a hard time finding a “ trustworthy source to get the engine if anyone knows where it will help alot !!
I’ve called, researched alot and i am willing to travel for the right one for the right price!

I live in Monterey Ca everything crazy expensive and far if i had the money id buy a brand new truck but i dont! Plus the cost of a new/ used tundra is crazy as well as the shops !
I have called a bunch of places all over yet im striking out as i don’t trust most anyone trying to sell me something i don’t want!

I plan to replace it myself though I have never actually replaced a entire engine before… though ive done a lot !
I have worked on cars especially my car my whole life and have almost all the tools already for the job !
I just need the engine im still looking, any advice on replacing it!
I ve read the haynes manual iv read forums and watched videos but mostly im concerned about installation part .timing and certain details only some whos done it before would know . So I appreciate any and all advice related to this !
    thank you so much!!!

Haven’t done a full swap either but LKQ is probably the most trusted salvage yard network.

There is a dismantler I picked up my 2ZZ engine $800 and C60 transmission for $350. Car was junked due to a dead clutch. There is a dismantler I found on Craigslist in Gilroy. Both came with 6 month warranty and both worked perfectly fine. I can probably source the info by tomorrow since I have a graveyard shift tonight and nap time is important.

I would agree with the LKQ option.

Damn. Seems like a lot of engine carnage on here lately. You track down why? Last couple we saw this month were timing belt snapped, either b/c it was was never changed or not changed at Toyota's suggested 9yr/90k mile interval.

Oh and to address your questions:

You'll want something from another VVTi Tundra, so hunting for an '05-'06 engine is ideal, Sequoia may also work from '05-'07 but double-check that point, and ideally, get the COMPLETE engine harness and ECU with it, aim for same drivetrain (4WD/2WD and auto/manual).

Skip Haynes and Chiltons. Check this thread, about 4 paragraphs in, grab the linked service manual: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

There's a number of videos linked here at the forum related to timing etc. and what's needed. You'll definitely want to grab this Aisin (Aisin is OEM) kit from almost any vendor except scAmazon or fleaBay.

Last time i had a rod go through a block, the engine was oil starved but it was on an older GM product so not surprising.

I would think a salvage yard here in the northeast would have a functioning engine on a truck with a bad frame or totaled body.

I really like this place and would really enjoy not being banned for a week.

Hey, just because @MotoMojo got his mojo going doesn’t mean we don’t get to have a little fun too

Maybe he should check the filler neck to make sure there was no damage there..

In all seriousness tho, sorry to hear about your motor OP :hattip:

Its been sitting a year now and i have left every thing as is !
    Question 1 .
I was wondering if I should wait till i get the new engine or should i go ahead and take this one out or at least have it disassembled and ready? I don’t have a garage just drive way ! Im cautious about rust dust and dew! Will it be ok if but the old engine in the back off the truck while I wait for the new one?

With the high cost of tundra s today its way cheaper to do it my self !

ive called probly 30 shops all over the local and sf oak bay area every one wants 6000 or more even !! The cheapest tundras i found was 4000 with big problems - 8000 decent condition but with high miles !

I'd personally leave it in. Pull it when you get the new '05-'06 engine in, and if it were me, I'd be tagging all the sensors on the hosed engine as I unplug them, mount the two blocks side-by-side in stands, and move all the tagged sensors etc. over so the new engine is similarly equipped to the old. This will lend to less surprises later down the road.

Granted, you do you. You may end up having the engine harness and other peripherals from the donor vehicle and prefer to go that route. Me, personally, if I'm dealing with the same generation/block, I prefer to keep it as close to what-it-was as possible, just to avoid surprises later. The forum has seen a couple of people who didn't listen to advice about picking same make (VVTi vs. non) and trans type, or pulled from sister vehicles and stuff, and ended up with annoying gremlins from small engine harness wiring discrepancies. That can't very well happen if the blocks are mirror images of one another...
