What's in your rear end?

I think you're limited to 05-06 4x4 DC. If you want to swap a complete diff (3rd member, axles/brakes & housing).

The 04 and 2wd DC have different ratios.



If you're willing to re-use your 3rd member, you can use the housing and axles/brakes from an 04. Or 04-06 2wd.


Regular and access cabs use a different width housing and axles.

Well damn lol. I found a really clean So Cal complete rear diff/axle/brakes for $900 shipped, but its from a 2WD 05 DC with LSD. It was the cheapest one I found. Lots of salvage yards wanted that just for the housing. I found many others much more expensive and in much worse condition. I was hoping to direct swap it but if the ratio is different then I'll just have to use my 3rd member. I wonder if I can swap the LSD into my 3rd member because mine is at 272k miles and this one looks to have much less mileage. I will run the VIN in carfax to be sure.

 

First search result in another forum says the 2WD & 4WD are both 3.91??? Can anyone confirm?

 

FWIW, I just punched in the VIN for the rear end I bought on toyodiy.com and it looks like the 05 DC 2WD is 3.91.

 

Apparently mine is 3.90 though??? I thought there was just 3.91.

 

Most usually round up.

3.909 = 3.91
3.916 = 3.92

 

So essentially the same gearing.

 

Close. But not exact. Not something you'd want to run on the street in 4x4. The gear tooth count is different as well.

47 & 12 teeth
43 & 11 teeth


Sand, snow, mud it'd be fine. Rocks, asphalt, etc it wouldn't. Just swap the centers/3rd member. Pinion flange may also be different (due to driveshaft bolt pattern), I never checked the 2wd vs 4wd DC ones.

 

So the flange bolt pattern is the same, but I think the 2wd have a weird isolator on the flange. My 4wd doesn’t have it, but a donor rear did have it

 

Huh. The 4x4 04 DC diff I got had that harmonic rubber flange.

 

I have an '05 3.909 LSD (43/11) 3rd that I plan to install in my '04 4WD. My "as built" rear is 3.909 LSD. The '05 flange is bigger than the 04, and the bolt holes are slightly further apart. When I had my slip yoke off recently to change the u-joint I was able to match it up to the '05 flange, and center punch the new holes I'll drill to use my '04 shaft. Now I don't have to worry about changing the flange

I agree that 47/12 = 3.91666 is not a good choice to replace 3.909 in 4WD.

I mean that's a .007( 0.17%) difference between the two. You can have a 1 to 3% difference in final ratio just with differences in tire wear and air pressure front to rear with no issues evident. From what I'm seeing in other diff ratio threads, such a minor difference shouldn't be an issue??? Many report running a .01 to .02 difference with no issues.

I've encountered issues with awd and 4x4 systems with worn tires. Even 2wd/fwd with same brand/size purchased 6 months apart.

There's a reason many tire places will do all 4 tires on an AWD and not just 1-3.


I personally wouldn't want any extra load on the transfer case, diffs and driveline that can be solved by just swapping your 3rd member to the new diff.

 

It's less than 2/10ths of 1% difference from the front and not a full-time AWD system. Even if it were, it would probably still be fine. The only time I would be using 4Hi on the road would be if there were sufficient snow to warrant 4Hi. I've worked on AWD vehicles my entire career so I'm well aware of the issues with tread depths there, but I personally have never encountered a customers vehicle which had issues from mismatched tread depths, and a lot of these people are running around with some very scary tire conditions.

 

This is misinformation if it hasn’t been corrected already. All 1st gen Tacoma’s and Tundras have the same front and rear diffs as each other.

Fronts are Reverse Rotation (High Pinion) 7.5’s Clam Shells, and the rears are “8.4” (not really 8.4”) Low Pinion Drop Outs.

 

Apologies in advance for those who know this newbie LSD identification question. Trying to determine if my 2001 SR5 Access has a LSD or not

The rear differential does not have the red LSD sticker.

• Housing is stamped K4 (Have not read a thread mentioning stampings)
• Toyota VIN build does not include LSD
• Mine has a Toyota hitch and electrical connections.
• Been told by a local 2001 owner the LSD option started in 2002?

I changed the oil with Lucas 80W-90. About 3.25 quarts drained out and torqued drain bolt to 39 Ft Lbs.
