New to forum and have owned 2000 Tundra SR5 TRD for 13 years. Picking up 2021 SR5 TRD Off Road this Friday. I do some towing of about 2500 lbs. and hope to get camper in future that would weight up to 60007000 lbs. I would like to get added protection of transmission cooler but GCS website says out of stock for now. Did sign up for updates. Taking a trip in September and towing several hundred miles and would like to have one installed before then. Any idea when kits for 2021 will be available or are there any other options? Thanks.

This weekend I took 2021 Tundra to mechanic friend who has a lift and we installed Genuine Cooling Systems 15 row transmission cooler kit and Talons Garage catalytic converter shields. With outside temperature around 90 degrees transmission pan temperature was around 203 during highway and city driving and about same conditions next day after install temperature was around 187. I will feel a lot more comfortable when towing now. Thanks to GCS for the cooler kit and Talons Garage for their aluminum transmission and transfer case shield.

Did you follow the video? Anything different I should know about on our 21 nightshades vs the video? Also, did you check the temps before and after?

I actually had mine installed by the dealership, and they just followed the instructions provided with the kit.
As far as temperatures, I routinely hit over 200+ wile just driving in town, and now rarely see anything above 190 on a hot summer day.

My 2014 Sequoia without a cooler stays around 200-215F in traffic. No towing or anything. I’ll probably add a cooler since my thermal degradation meter is maxed out.

That's crazy, my dealer told me they wouldn't install an aftermarket cooler.

I guess the “W” word was never said out loud during my entire interaction history with them, and I was totally fine with that. YMMV..

I'm getting ready to install a transmission cooler this weekend. The question I have is: Do I pull the thermostat pin after the install is complete? I've heard some say leave it open and some say pull the pin. Advice??

Most likely will need it in place to let transmission get up to temps quicker. If too cold weather, torque converter wont lock up until warmed up.

If I remember correctly, I pulled the pin after everything was installed and refill procedure was finished. So basically the very last step.

Thanks, I guess I saw it on a YouTube video where someone said to leave the pin in. However, it just didn't make sense to me because the pin is meant to be pulled out for a reason.

I know exactly what video you're talking about. That guy lives in Northern California where it doesn't get super cold and he drives long uphills to work. He stated he pulls the pin out to always keep it running and it never goes under 190 if I recall.

Yes that is the video. I live in Southern Texas where it rarely gets cold at all and coastal region so the roads are super flat. He says the thermostat is set to 250 degrees, if that is true won't my trans always get up to 250? Maybe I shouldn't worry about it. I only pull a big load about once a year.

Can't be 250. It starts to open probably around 175-180 degrees.

I hope so. It just didn't make sense if the thermostat was set for 250, what's the point then?

I bought and installed the kit on my 2020 Tundra, I belive in June of 2020. After install went for a drive around town before reinstalling the grill and watching the temp from the OBD reader. When the temp was showing like 185 degrees I stopped went out front and touched the lines to the cooler, the input line was notably quite warm while the return line was still cool.

Sorry for the double post - I forgot there was a thread for the trans coolers.

How tight do the push lock fittings and the M22 to 6AM adapters need to be? And how do you get them tight but pointing in the right direction?

I started off snug but keep getting a small leak. Tweaked it a few times got faster leaks.

I’ve now tightened them to about as tight as I can get them with the push locks pointing in the right direction. I may need to top off the transmission fluid before another check run.

    Story
I wanted to be cool (pun intended) like many others so I purchased a trans cooler kit from Genuine Cooling Systems. It’s been a while since I ordered but it’s been stupid hot here in SE GA until the last couple weekend.

The install has gone pretty smoothly up until now. I can’t seem to get these fittings sealed. Any help would be much appreciated. I’m afraid of over torquing and stripping something out or yanking the hose loose from the other end.

I dont have an AJT but looking at the pictures on their site, it mounts to the same hole that you relocate the horn to so you would have to either remove the horn or relocate it else where. First pic is from AJTs site and second pic is my trucks cooler, its the 20 row that they offered while the 15s where out of stock, so its a bit wider than the ones currently for sale.

Wow thanks for looking into that I'm sure I can move horn somewhere else I guess I'm more concerned about it interfering with sensor functionality the sensor already doesn't work that great there's gotta be someone out there that has installed both cooler and sensor relocation bracket
