Got a hold of my dealer after hearing from Brand Engagement who said I should reach out to them and they are cutting me a check for the amount I paid for the tonneau. Should get the check by the end of the week so we shall see.

had my 10k service today. Dealer had issues with my cover because I had put lock tight on the nuts. They felt like the damaged it a little at the mounting holes so they are ordering me a new one, all covered. Annoying as it has been at least it seems like most dealers have been as helpful as they could be. When I looked around with my 6.5 foot bed everything was as much or the same so I'm happy with the brand new one I'll have in a few days.

My dealer has ordered and received the parts for my tonneau cover. However my truck will be the first they will have done. Should I be concerned?

Here's the fix. Bolts closest to the cab funnel water into the bed....
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/oem-tonneau-fix.130155/

They ordered a new repair kit but I think the cover will need replaced. We'll see

So, I made my appt last week and took the Tundra in for the tonneau recall today and of course, they weren't really ready. They had to inspect it before ordering the parts or a new cover. My cover is in perfect condition so it gets the parts... which they don't have in stock. Seriously? So, this has turned into a 2-visit to the dealer thing. And to add insult to injury they removed the cover and just laid in it the bed of my truck. I had not thought about that happening. They left the rails on and all that so I guess I can pop it back on easy enough for our weekend travels. Otherwise, I'd have to haul it into the garage, I suppose, or risk it being stolen. Unlikely, but you never know.

My dealer did the same process. Made an appointment to bring it in for a week later only for them to inspect and order part then wait for them to call me to make an appointment a week later. A 3 weeks process basically. They didn’t remove my cover though.

Lucky you. I am going to re-install my cover. If I knew the parts would come in a couple of days maybe not, but if it takes 3 weeks that will be after my knee surgery and I'll not be able to drive it for another several weeks at least. What a PITA.

My Dealership ordered a new cover for mine this morning.......2nd repair kit didn't fix the leak around the original carriage bolt holes. However, they were able to stop the leaks by installing a second washer between the bracket and cover which pulled the carriage bolt tighter to the the outside washer / cover, they took photos / description of the repair and sent them in to Toyota and within a few minutes Toyota told the Dealership to order and install a new cover. Was told the covers are in stock at the warehouse and should only take a few days to come in.

I have installed both myself, and there are minor differences between the Toyota OEM cover and the Bakflip MX4.

The BakFlip has three extra foam pieces, two small ones at the front corners to seal 1/4-inch gaps, and a long foam strip running all the way across the top of the front bed by the cab.
The BakFlip has extra rounded corner pieces on the perimeter of the cover that do not exist on the Toyota cover.

The biggest difference is that the BakFlip leaks badly at the corners up front by the cab. I'm not talking about the rear by the tailgate; I know that's not supposed to be waterproof because the tailgate has gaps at the bottom to let the water drain out. I'm talking about up by the front of the bed where the Toyota cover was bone dry, even in heavy rain.

It's like the drain tubes are not doing anything. It's a steady drip-drip-drip at each corner. Now, I'll have to waste my time troubleshooting this.

I made a huge mistake by going with BakFlip.

Just had my recall done for the tonneau cover. The original hole does not sit flush with the new bolt. The gasket looks loose and may leak. Will have to take a look at it when I come back from vacation. The second bolt gasket sits flush with the cover.

Can you take pictures from underneath to see what it is they did there?
Is there 2 bolts per side now, did they do an anything to the bracket those bolts attach to?

2 bolts per side. They just added another hole and different bolts. Different nut and has a safety pin to prevent the nut from fully backing out. Added spacer to prevent the bolt from over tightening and crushing the cover. Which was the issue with the old bolt and nut. That’s why my original hole doesn’t sit flush now. Didn't touch the rails.

That is not typical of BakFlip covers. Sounds like an installation problem regarding fitment, or gasket install. I'd start there, I've owned BakFlip MX4 on 5 different trucks and never had the leakage issue you speak of.

Mine was the same as yours, its leaks. The Dealership ordered a replacement cover per Toyota. Had the new cover installed yesterday (new brackets and tracks included). The new cover comes pre-drilled as well.

"we owe" as in replacement? Or owed as part of truck purchase?

Owed as part of the original purchase (dealer installed "freebee").

I'm also owed one as part of original purchase, as a dealer installed option. Keep giving me the runaround saying it doesn't exist and will contact me when available. Figured maybe direct impact recalls might just have priority or something. Did you get notified or just keep on them?

Whatever you do, DO NOT get Toyota to install the tonneau recall!!! Like many others, mine is now leaking BADLY. Unfortunately (and as I suspected I would be told) the dealer has told me that they installed the cover per Toyota’s instructions and there is nothing wrong with it. They further stated that tonneau covers are expected to leak and are weather resistant but not weatherproof. In the year and a half that I owned this truck prior to this fix I had minimal - and I mean you could barely see any moisture - in the bed. Furthermore it would take a massive storm to even get the slightest bit of water in. Now, where they drilled the holes, water just pours in.

I called Toyota. They were useless. I made a complaint and received a complaint number. By making a complaint the dealer told me that they could caulk the hole but that wasn’t an official sanctioned repair by Toyota. They would do this for “good customer service”. I told them no thank you and I only want authorized Toyota work done on my truck.

I called Toyota back and elevated the complaint to the senior customer service representatives. This representative called the dealer and then told me that the dealer is offering a caulk job. I asked if I got that done and for some reason the tonneau had to come off, go for a warranty repair, etc. would Toyota cover it since it was caulked. After a long pause I was told “no” and caulking is at my own risk.

Fortunately in Maryland we have a Lemon Law process. I’m sure that it will be a headache but something has to be done. Water getting into the cover will mildew the foam in the tonneau and may cause rust.

I am EXTREMELY disappointed in Toyota. I have driven Toyota’s exclusively since 1997. After this experience I am afraid it may be my last.

My dealer recommended (with a wink and a nod) that I wait until Toyota comes up with a better fix. I am sceptical that will happen though.

    What’s wrong with stock?
The recall must not be a big concern for some stealerships. I took my truck in a month ago and they looked at it after I requested the repair. They left it on the truck and only tightened the screws. I questioned them on it and the said they had to order repair parts. They did not tell me to take cover off or anything like that. Knowing that, I am not In a hurry to take it back for repairs.

Anyone know if I buy one used off Facebook marketplace that needs the recall if Toyota will honor it still even if it came off a different truck

Highly doubt it as the recalls are tied to the vehicles VIN. Might try. All they could say is NO

Friend has a 2024 Tundra purchased in April. He bought OEM tonneau cover through parts department and installed. Then decided he wanted a topper. I’m assuming the tonneau sold by the parts department in April/May would be clear of the recall issues? Any help is appreciated. I’d like to take it off his hands. Thx!

    It's honestly a very easy self-fix.

If it has two hold-down bolts per side up at the cab end it has the recall fix. If it has only one per side, it doesn't.
