    The fun begins
I’m a Pennzoil Platinum Ultra fan. Since the day it quoted down my lifters in my Acura TSX I’ve been sold. Mobil 1 was way more noticeable.
Bob is the Oil Guy has UOAs on it that shows Pennzoil being near the top.

Ive seen a few mention 1k, 5k, etc… on oil changes. What’s the reasoning behind this ?
Dealership didn’t change my oil at 5k they said it needed it at 10k

If you want to keep your truck for more than 100k miles and ensure best possible engine performance then do an oil change early at 1-2k miles to clean engine from any light debris from the factory, then oil changes every 5k miles for best protection

Just to put engine oil change (and other vehicle fluids) intervals into perspective, recommended oil change intervals are based on a compromise between the government EPA who would rather you don't change oil as it is a toxic waste product to be dealt with vs the engineers who designed the engine to get it to at least long enough to get it past warranty period to keep corporate bean counters happy not buying engines. Perfect example is the "lifetime fluid fill" many manufacturers are specifying in their automatic transmissions. Not ideal, but generally the transmission could make it until warranty is up and manufacturer is no longer liable.
Now the 10K interval would only suffice if perfect world driving conditions were in place such as routine commutes of 10-20 or more miles. Now... real world driving, routine short trips of under 5 miles or 10 minutes, extreme hot or cold weather conditions, towing or hauling, hard driving, or lots of idling, etc, etc; 5K is the max.
It comes down to maintenance intervals of engine/transmission etc. surviving vs thriving. Personally I prefer frequent oil and fluid changes as if in the long run I decide to keep vehicle long term, it will last a long time problem free.
I've been in the repair business for 45 years and never once have I seen an engine fail because the oil was too clean. Oil is cheap, engines are not!

First oil change at 3300, next will be soon at 6600, then Toyota can do the 10K and I'll do every 5k after that.

Here are the results of the oil analysis after ~9800 miles on my break in oil. Higher than average metal/silicon because of the wear in, but nothing alarming to note yet. I'm gonna run another 9k miles on it and see where we're at! These 9k miles included towing a 9k trailer and several road trips from Dallas to Austin, Houston, Little Rock, and Tulsa. I'd say its a moderate workload on the truck.

I'm gonna run it another 9/10k miles and see where its at.

You mean you will do oil change now, and do another oil test after 9k miles, right?

I changed the oil at 9800 miles on July 12 and pulled this sample from that.

I've got ~1000 miles on the new oil already haha

I am doing every 5k. Easy to remember.

I'll do air filters and cabin filter every 10k.

Thats good, early oil changes should help to prevent those bearing failures

what's the opinion on the 1000mile break in period for the engine? (no cruise control, no excessive speeds etc)

Per Toyota, no break in required. Just do it at 10k.

Per forum members and I personally at 500 then 1,500. Then every 5k. Choose your poison.

I did my first oil change at 1500, and will do it every 5000 from now on. It's cheap peace of mind in my book.

    What should I do?

First oil change (Toyota TC) at 2700 miles. Now at 6k on the oil (so total 8700 on truck, non hybrid) with 2k mile road trip in front of me. The road trip will be towing 16ft 5k pound travel trailer for 1k of that 2k trip total, this is first towing on truck. All other driving is every day type, nothing harsh and I'm easy on it with no hot rodding or excessive idling etc. That means the current oil will be at 8k at end of upcoming trip. Should I change it before the 2k road trip or just wait till after and call it good?
    thanks in advance :)

If it were me I'd change it pre-trip. It's almost impossible to do too much preventive maintenance.

High mile oil change intervals are SOLELY for the manufacturer to advertise 2 or 3 years 'free' maintenance, period! Many luxury cars are 12k. This is also their way of getting you used to visiting service dept. It's not 'free' , it's so they can bake in maintenance costs in the price of vehicle, which profits sales vs. service dept. Same with service contracts. Charge all future repairs up front, tack on profit to pay F&I person, and pay interest on all of it. Pay techs warranty time to screw them. Ever wonder why dealers started selling tires? Because market research showed first tire replacement was when they typically lost service customers for good- (post warranty). I have seen the oil and the engine internals on many 10-12k interval cars. DON'T do it. 5K miles is a good interval. The manufacturers know it will likely make it out of warranty, that's ALL they care about. They are a business, and planned obsolescence keeps them IN business! It's not that hard to understand. Signed-retired 41 yr. dealer tech.

How do we then deal with the fact that some people have sent samples to to be tested and found the oil in good shape close to 10k miles? one fellow had good test results at 9800 miles including some towing. Just trying to rationalize real data with (admittedly) a feel good feeling which includes a lifetime of 3k oil changes.

5k not 3k. You can do as you like of course. If you saw a 12k oil interval topend, you'd be convinced. Also I rarely see people commenting on checking the level, 10k does not mean open the hood at 10k. As far as rationalizing, here's an analogy. We eat burgers and fried foods when young, and our blood tests ok. I think you see where I'm going with that...

If you do watch some of the Car Care Nut videos of him rebuilding toyota engines, you'll see that the main cause of these engines burning oil is because people try to do 10k oil change intervals.

Therefore, a simple prevention measure is to change oil sooner than 10k miles.

Why Blackstone says 10k oil is just fine? I don't know. Maybe testing oil alone won't tell you the whole story, and engine has build up happening somewhere where particles not necessarily making their way into the oil to show on the test.

If you plan to keep your truck for a while then do change oil more frequently at 5k miles. If you'll trade it in within 5 years, then it doesn't matter and you can do 10k oil change intervals.

I do trust Car Care Nut more and would follow his advise to do oil changes more frequently instead of Blackstone.

Yes sir you are correct, there is a break in procedure for the engine.
My bad, I was referring to the break in for an oil change.

I posted about this in another thread, but the video is a little bit misleading. The owner of this vehicle puts like 30k miles on it annually. That is 3x the average driver. The dealership told the owner that it was fine for a 10k mile interval, but for usage like that, 5k miles is the recommendation in the owners manual. The creator of the video only mentions that ONE time in the entire video, and then spends the rest of the video saying that everyone should have a 5k OCI.

For people driving 10/20k miles per year, a 10k mile interval is perfectly fine. a more frequent interval isn't hurting anything, but saying that a 10k mile OCI is dangerous is hyperbolic.

I generally trust blackstone more than any youtube channel or random guy on a forum. They get data from the oil in my truck and we work together to find the best OCI for my usage. I always recommend everyone else get their oil analyzed too, so you know whats best for your own use case instead of taking advice from the internet where you can't verify anyone's credentials

This isn't 20 years ago or even 10 years ago, if you like wasting your money then by all means go ahead. I am sure your truck won't care if it is getting 5k oil changes vs 10k and will go the same 300k miles overall. PAO full synthetic oils these days are able to go a lot longer than the oils of yesterday. With SP plus ratings these oils tend to not break down as much as the oils of yester year.

Wasting your money is up to you all, but the manufacturer recommends oil change intervals, I am sure the dealerships love 5k oil changes it means more money for them.
