Anyone ever rekey their truck?

Hey all,

I just picked up a 05 DC Tundra with 240k on the clock. It came with two keys. One works ok in the ignition but the other you need to fiddle with it. On the doors neither key seems to turn the passenger door lock but on the drivers each each will unlock but not lock the door. The tailgate lock cylinder was propped open and full of junk. I took it all apart and cleaned it but it still doesn't work with a key. The glove box works fine with either key.

This got me thinking of rekeying the whole truck with new cylinders. I found the part number 69005-0C040 and it appears to run roughly $300 for the full kit.

Anyone ever done this before and have any advice?

 

If I was in your position, I would consider first going to a Toyota dealer and having them cut a new key based on your VIN # and it's related key code.
They run +-$20. You will also need to have your registration showing ownership along with ID that matched.
You may still need the kit but It's somewhat of a small cost to at least find out.

 

Not only that, but you may find the key re-cut to your VIN, with new clean edges, may actually lock/unlock the other doors, part of the problem may just be you're dealing with worn down keys.

Interesting, I'll call the dealer about getting a new key cut first to see if that solves the issue.

@Shifty, I read your post so many times and have referenced it a bunch. It was very helpful in my decision to buy a truck. I think the guy thought I was weird looking at the frame for rust.

 

Awesome, glad you stumbled on it before buying. We haven't seen anyone yet this year that's been a victim to rusty frame - at least none that posted publicly - but always send people there first 'just in case'.

 

Make sure you stress the fact that you want new keys cut, not copies of your existing worn down keys. I doubt you need new cylinders.

Also, once the new keys are cut, go back to your truck and test them before leaving. I had a new key cut at the dealer and the first one didn't work. They had to use a different machine and try again.

 

Prob not but anyone know if the dealership woulda also reissue you the key number plate as seen below in the owners manual? Not the original owner so I don’t have one and thought I would be a cool token to have cause I’m weird like that

 

Unless you got that tag from the original owner, you never get one anywhere that I’ve seen

We didn't get one with our 2020 Highlander. Here's the one from my 2013 Camry, though, which I traded in for the 1GT back in 2018/2019. I'll sell it for $50 to anyone who wants to "feel" original
(I'll even include the Eisenhower dollar and USB Unifying receiver!!)
(Side note: Other side has a 5-digit number on it, I don't understand how this could possibly correspond to a single vehicle ... maybe it's the 45,000th 2013 Camry Hybrid XLE for that year? Is there a database somewhere you could get the number from?!)

I have a bunch of old stamps too, I'm not partial to them, I'd rather have money in the truck slush fund!

 

Since the purpose is to use that for replacements in the case you lose your keys, id bet anything it correlates to a key groove template rather than your specific car itself.

 

Yeah, but you could totally look OG fresh and important. It's not like anyone is gonna look it up.

Anyway, I'm guessing you're right, you can plug it into some system to pull up a template. But it just seems ... weird, why not just log it by the VIN?

I had one of those with the 15 Corolla, bought it certified used. I don’t think the 16 T4r I bought came with one though.

 

I just looked at my tag and the 5 digit number correlates to the lock tumbler size for each pins in the cylinder starting at the pin nearest the key handle. 1 is a very shallow cut in the key, 9 is the deepest cut and other numbers in between. Mine doesn’t have any zeros so I can’t say if that correlate to no cut or another cut

By comparing the various cuts against known keys or a locksmiths pin set you should be able to come up with your cars 5 digit key number. Perhaps the dealer will even look it up for you by VIN if you have proof of ownership. With this number in hand a scrap of aluminum and a number stamp you can then replicate your original tag.

Only question is but why.

Quick update to the original post, on your recommendation to have the dealer cut a key I went to the dealer today and had them cut a key. The key now works in both doors for both lock and unlock (remember the old key could only unlock the drivers door and that's it)

The tailgate is still a no go. Any suggestions there? Should I take the cylinder out and take it to a locksmith and see if they can rekey it to match my key?

 

Someone likely swapped in a different handle but failed to swap over the lock OR someone stole the tailgate so they had no chance.

I'd try calling a locksmith to re-key the lock with proper tumblers. Last time I had to get that done for a motorcycle I salvaged/rebuilt, it cost me $125, but it was worth it. I had to call half a dozen locksmiths before finding someone who knew enough about locks to do the work. YMMV.

 

I wonder if the dealer would just sell him a new cylinder for his tailgate that matches his vin?

 

I don't know if that's a thing.

On every vehicle I've owned, across three different brands at least, any time I've needed to purchase an OEM cylinder, they give you the key to go with it.

 

Did you ever end up doing this? I'm trying to only have one key, right now I have no key for glove box and tailgate and separate keys for doors and ignition.

I only got one key for the Tundra I bought last month and it doesn't fit the tailgate.

 

Key number plates? I bought my truck new 22 years ago. I feel jipped.

 

A locksmith can rekey them alike.

 

A locksmith should able to rekey your cylinder to match the others.

 

Cheaper than buying all new keys for 300 bucks? I had to get new keys for a work truck one my guys lost the keys and for two keys it was over 300 dollars.

 

When i first got my 2004 Tundra it had three different lock cylinders. Driver's door, ignition, and tailgate. I stopped by a locksmith to get a quote, and it was something like $50 a cylinder IF i removed said cylinder from the truck and handed it to them to work on. I ended up going for broke and spent a couple hours removing all 5 lock cylinders from my truck (2 doors, 1 ignition, passenger airbag switch, and tailgate) and jockeyed the cylinder pins around and doing some filing. It took some doing, but now it only takes me one key to rule them all.

FYI, i do have a little bit of totally amateur lock cylinder experience so that helped immensely.

 

Was the ABS switch even keyed like the others? I always assumed it was generic and that any Toyota key would work.

 

Not weird, I have my key tag still, and the original window sticker as well, all the stuff it came with new.

 

EDIT: i meant passenger side airbag switch, not ABS switch.



I can’t remember for sure, but i think it too was also keyed alike. I think i just removed all of the timber’s out of that cylinder though. It’s not like someone is going to break into my truck for the sole purpose to turn the passenger side airbag on or off.
