Alright guys, here is an update to my thread that may contain some good conversation material.

I built this rack for my truck, welded it up over 4th of July weekend. the rack needs some small changes, but my vision is a softopper style rack that I can also put cargo on top of. eventually it will get a composite roof with prinsu style extrusions for load securing as well as canvas roll-up sides.

I installed these tailgate bushings from Ryan Miller on facebook. super high quality product. nylon bushings and TPU bumpers. made my tailgate feel a whole lot better.


Next I welded up these rear bumpstop mounts, it will become more clear how they work in a minute. they are a m10-1.25 thread to match the front bumps.

Here are my bumpstops. they are 3d printed out of tpu. it is my design.

all of the aftermarket options are at least in the $100-$150 range for a pair. Some are close to $250. it can be done for much cheaper than that. all of the options on the market are extremely un-engineered (aside from maybe one) Time will tell where this goes.

absolutely! they are incredible quality parts. most 3d printed parts are kind of a novelty but this is a PRODUCT. printed out of nylon, tough stuff. they also come with little TPU bumpers to take up slop in the tailgate.

Just the hassle and annoyance of FB / Instagram. Many don’t have an account on principle and many workplaces block social media. Hence my offer to jump through that stupid and unnecessary hoop to help the gang out. Because, while I want a kit, the extra hassle means I probably won’t bother myself unless I’m doing it for more than just me.

 

Which ubolt flip are you using? Consider making a whole kit with the ubolts, top plate and progressive bump stops. I like your design, similar to the Timbrens.

 

Huh. That's something I was thinking about doing also. At the moment, I just sling the cap's tether over the latch on the door.

I was thinking more along the lines of making a bracket that let you drop the cap into the back of the door like most modern cars do, and the SOLO Motorsports one:

So you prefer to place it on the cradle rather than stuffing it in the hole?

And your keyless gas cap does not have an integrated holder? Like the keyed ones do?

definitely something to consider. the ubolt flip is from ruffstuff. sweet kit, super stout and affordable. I had to clearance the spring perches slightly with a flap wheel.

 

my non-locking cap does not have a cradle or a hole

 

I’d be game to trade the new 2nd one I bought for a non locking. But I doubt anyone wants to have a hole in their door and pay to paint it.

Yeah, if anyone wants to try a hinge swap, I think someone (Nick?) may have already done that. I can also try to find my OG one, busted hinge but it'd have the holder. And I have a spare unpainted (black) new one, separate from the one I had painted to match which is on the truck right now.

We just got permission here in Oregon to pump our own gas a few weeks ago, I haven't actually done much self serve most of the past year.

 

alright guys, yet another update.

on the docket for this round of wrenching is:

• lower control arm bushings (I used siberian bushings)
• coilover top hat (these are from wheelers offroad)
• energy suspension steering rack bushings
• no name outer tie rod ends
• alignment cams (unplanned)

a word of caution to guys planning on doing lower control arm bushings. BUY NEW ALIGNMENT SLEEVES. I really had faith that mine would come out, my truck really isnt that rusty and had been aligned recently, so I knew they would move. no dice. these things were FROZEN. i was in a pinch and i had to replace these with the SPC 25445 kit. i saved my old hardware so that i can buy new sleeves and replace with OEM later





Ive seen guys say that these rivets on the lower arm can fatigue and loosen, I threw some welds on there. helpful? maybe.



a 6" c clamp helps a lot with the steering rack bushings.



a tip for installing these things: let the bushings sit in the freezer for a couple hours, and heat the control arm with a torch. I was able to beat them in with a heavy mallet, no press needed.




the truck is a much more acceptable height now, I got rid of the big spacer above the shock and bumped the bilstein 5100 circlip up to notch #2. no more squat

 

How hard was it to find the Siberian bushings? I've heard mixed things.
