Put a shell together with my son today. SmartCap knock off from Alibaba. Custom built for 1st gen DC -aluminum , three windoors, sliding glass windows on the sides, led interior light. Weight is aprox. 150 lbs

One has to wonder what RSI is doing lately, super long delays and minimal coverage of models. With a modular design they really should be able to support trucks like FGT and even RC FGT.

More importantly, the bed replacement concept is really interesting but for some reason is taking as long as the tesla pickup to get out the door. I could really see the value in a complete bed replacement modular system which might even allow safe passenger transport in the back, more like a military vehicle. Sure would be nice to have configuration options and quick cleanout space to make a pickup more versatile.

In the meantime, these hard shells are nice and light so I see the appeal there but looks-wise I'm still a fiberglass guy if prices are comparable. I can see how $800 on an aluminum 150lb topper would be pretty competitive with domestic fiberglass options, guess that tells you how much of the cost is the product vs running a legit business.

My major gripe with Leer is no support for their older products. I'd be willing to pay a chunk to convert my boot-front FGT shell to have a removeable window if they made something like that, even if it was a kit that required some labor and paint. And I need better seals on the windoors at some point if I want it to really be waterproof.

 

Swapped out rear shocks, drained rear diff, and tried to find a lug nut key.

Rear shocks were OESpectrums and trash. The Bilstein 5100s are night and day better. Rear end feels planted and actually absorbed bumps. Working on finding a lug nut to remove these locks, previous owner didnt know where key was. The Mcgard set that includes a key from o reillys didn't work. Mcgard uses rounded edges with different sizes compared to mine. Might have to go to the pawn shop to find some old sockets to hammer on. I've got 5100s with OME springs ready to install on the front to replace the Rough Countrys there.


Drained rear diff and saw a shitload of metal shavings on the plug. Oil was reddish brown, looked like shit. Hoping this is the first time its been changed and thats why there's shavings on the plug. Will dig into the diff when I get more time, might be a reason for some of the vibrations in the truck.


Also tightened the bolts under the trans mount. The two that look like they dont have washers were pretty loose. Will be replacing all 4 tomorrow.

This is only known to be an issue on 2wd trucks AFAIK, wonder if this is something we should all be looking for.

Be sure to verify your rear diff breather is working properly as part of the rear diff tune-up. They get mucked up.

 

Part number for that ('05-'06 at least), it's only like $8 or something stupid: 90930A3001 => REAR AXLE VENT BREATHER

 

Got the hybrid road worthy today. Seems I parked it 6 months ago & have mostly been ignoring it. Too soon to say success, but first road testing were successes. Watch & see for a week. Anyone ever put an unwilling cat into a carrier to take it to the vet? That 70# battery pack was doing a really good impression of CAT INOWANNAGO VET, but go it in there. Only relevant as it gets me 1 step closer to the next Tundra (with magic window) There's a 2004 Sequoia really calling to me right now, I'm trying real hard to ignore it.

 

@Tundra2 why don't you just take a bottle jack, some scrap lumper & put that front bumper closer to stock orientation?

 

I checked out the inside of a 3rd gen today. Neighbor’s guest. I didn’t hate it.

 

When we went off roading with one, he said every beep and bloop and sensor and warning was going off constantly. Hopefully he can find a switch or over ride for it, he said it was super annoying. But he did like all the cameras and stuff while on the trail

 

I've been thinking about buying a new aftermarket bumper but have been buying good for our home so far.

Selling crackie is not at the top of my to do list.

Don't be that guy. We have enough of those guys around here already.

Even our 2020 Highlander has that option. The dash HUD, between the gauges, asks you if you want to temporarily silence them when beeping, but I'm pretty sure you can go into the settings (while the car is not in motion) and turn off all the nanny features. It worked for other crap on our car, like lane assist and other crap I can't stand.
