If this works for your application, I found it very easy to use a PosiTap to splice into the cargo light wire, and I did so under the door sill, not at the panel. Way less busy:

The black wiring harness has a split, so you can access the wires by prying it open. My 2018 had a pink wire for the cargo circuit. You may have to test several wires, which is where a PosiTap comes in handy.
Be cautioned that Toyota changed many wire colors between years.

oh! i didn;t know that black wiring harness has a split. i felt so stupid! lol i though i was going cut it open...save me time and i will try use flathead praying it open. question - which one is better? T-Tap or posi-tap? please correct me if im wrong. t-tap or posi-tap can be removed and cover with black electric tap or leave it alone. it doesn;t hurt the wired? thanks

I much prefer using PosiTaps when making wiring connections. T-Taps do a lot more damage to the wiring insulation and wiring. PosiTaps just poke a small hole in the insulation to make the wiring contact. They are much better for testing for the correct wire and are much easier to repair with electrician tape/silicone liquid. @panicman is correct in that the cargo light wire is different in color from year to year. On, my 2015 it was a thin, grayish wire. I think you can rule out the thicker wires in the wiring bundle.

Can you take some photos once you located the correct wire? Im doing the EXACT same thing with my tow mirrors. I just have the wires hanging out in the jam for now, I gave up awhile ago looking for the correct wire. And now its over 100 degrees in my garage.

By the way, I hope you are disconnecting your battery negative cable before doing any wiring/tapping. That is a good way to blow a fuse if you aren't. Also, once you think you have identified the cargo light wire in the bundle, you can use half of the PosiTap to puncture the wire insulation and then use your test light. Ground the test light negative clip, touch the positive test light probe to the PosiTap exposed metal, and the test light should light up with the door open. When you press the door switch in, the test light should go off after the delay along with the cargo light and inside dome light. If this doesn't happen, it is the wrong wire so just place some electical tape over the small hole the PosiTap made and move on to the next thin wire.

The wiring diagrams show all truck 2018-2021 should be a pink wire.

Finally! I get a chance to take a look at it. Here is the pic. I didn't get a chance to test
circult tester because thick wired are in the way. I need to remove black tape and do it again. I hope this pictures will help you find the answer.

I have a topper on my truck that has an interior light, currently its tapped into the taillights but thats not really that great because the lights need to be on for it to work. I regularly travel with my dogs in the bed if the truck and it would be cool to be able to flip the light on back there with the cargo switch. I dont really feel like running a wire all the way back there. Could I possibly just tap the cargo light itself from under the lens and then run the wire into the topper?

tested all three of the pink wires with a posi tap, got it on the last one. My taps were a little big hope I didn’t damage the other two too much. Everything seems to ok.. ‍♂️

Sweet!!! Your da man!! Me no luck!! Sighs... my tow mirrors is only white wired and posi tap each wired...nothing happens. I'm thinking maybe tow mirrors white wired is built reverse only since it have no power or maybe I will have to split to feed the power? I don't know. Does your tow mirrors have white wired only? I watched the YouTube and don't know which tap. So confused.

Blue post-tap connected each wired and nothing come up. I noticed that when I tested it voltage 12v is on and when it's off and still got 12v. Puzzled... on or off still got 12v.

Bringing back an old thread rather than start a new one.

In the driver door sill, what color wire would the cargo lights be for an 08/09?

I’m physically not able to pretzel myself under the dash to hit that wire everyone mentions.

I can also assume for lighting I can ground the other side thus making it in theory switched from the cargo light.

The wiring diagrams show it to be brown on the 07,08,09... It will run from the body control module under the dash up to the cargo light area in the back of the cab.

I think one of the problems with looking in the door sill is picking the right one. Multiple wires of several colors are there probably more than one brown. To make sure it is the right one going directly to the body control module is easiest. It is on pin #13 of the DC connector to the body control module.

Yes you can tap into this as a "switched" positive power source, ground the other side of any added on light will make it come on/off with the cargo light.

I’m going to tap the wires at the cargo switch. I can’t get up under the dash to catch the brown wire.

I think there’s 3-5 wires at that switch.

Yes and they are all ground wires. The "Switch" grounds out the relay so it will close to send power down the brown wire. You can see the relay is powered by the 7.5A Cargo fuse, the trigger from the switch to close the relay is a ground signal.

If you were going to go this route, you would have to power your external lights when the key is on, then tapping into the switch would create the ground for them. I would not recommend this.

Look in the door sill fist, or get someone who can help reach up into where the body control module is.

If tapping under the drivers side door sill, what a people using for a ground? Is there an easy to access wire in the same location?
    Thanks in advance!
