Thanks for having this thread. I just bought a 2022 Pro hybrid. Other threads were steering my questions over here.

We also have a hybrid Highlander, and attempting to do a project on that resulted in a tow to the dealership. I tried tapping into the jump points under the hood…bad idea. Consequently, I am more cautious about adding electrical accessories. I plan to add the standard lights and eventually a winch. After reading all of the previous pages, you appear to be using an aux fuse panel (or something similar). I was looking at Auxbeam AR-600 and was wondering if anyone is using one (or any Auxbeam) and are you satisfied?

I appreciate everyone’s collaboration on the hybrids. TIA.

yes using an auxbeam, working perfect thus far. I have a few lights wired so far with zero issues. Highly recommend the auxbeam, it’s simple electronics and couldn’t justify paying for a switch pros. I also have a solar hood wired up. These hybrids can be a little finicky but overall do well with all the gadgets we like.

Until I started reading all of the threads, I never heard of a solar hood. I suppose that is primarily for overlanding? I can’t imagine much use for one for the standard everyday driver.

Correct, I think only use could be if you keep truck parked for extended periods of time it will keep your battery trickle charged. Or if you happen to use aux power, it's just one more failsafe to keep car operational.

If you overland and have a dual battery set up it could keep both you primary and secondary battery charged up in sequential order.

It is not, same dimensions. Only thing longer is the length of battery runs you’ll need to make for electronic runs since the battery is in the backseat and not the engine bay

Thank you for the post. Where in the fuse box did you tap in? I too am buying an Auxbeam and would prefer using the lead to the fuse box vs. running cables to the battery. TIA.

Do you have any videos or write up of how you installed the switch pro under the hood? I'm thinking that's my best option also.

Any help with diagnosis much appreciated.

I have a Baja designs S8 on top of my prinsu rack, with DRLs tapped to fuse to always be on with ignition. It is directly connected to battery and switched with an aux beam for the actual lights. I’ve noticed the DRLs only, will randomly turn on at night, around 2-3 minutes at a time. Maybe 4-5x or more overnight. I took it to my local dealer to trouble shoot, they said they fixed the issue but just noticed again tonight. Last time this happened while overlanding, I opened the door with ignition off and noticed my auxbeam was fully powered, and I was able to fire up both my main lightbar as well as ditch lights.

any idea why this could be happening?

    Hey @NHKTundra,
I would suggest doing a bench test on the S8 to make sure everything is working properly. If you are seeing any strange issues with the bar please feel free to contact us and we can help further the diagnosis. Another thing I would check is to make sure all the grounds are good and there are no loose wires anywhere.

    Best,
    Bill

    Hey @NHKTundra,
What fuse are the DRLs tapped into? I recently noticed on my vehicle the interior lights turn on when I walk up to the vehicle with the key in my pocket. Maybe the fuse you have tapped into is getting power when the vehicle senses the key is nearby?

So the 3rd gen Tacoma guys had this happen with allot of aftermarket lights. Has something to do with the truck periodically running something like a diagnostic (auto evaporator check) while the vehicle is off and it has to do with the fuse you use.

Thank you both gents. My local installer finally figured that it does have something to do with some sort of emissions check, could be the same as the evaporator. They said the fuse they had tapped into carried that line.

    Hopefully all fixed!

    Hey everyone,

Regarding Winch installs, there are three solutions for properly running power in your hybrid Tundras:

    1) Run power to the fusebox and tap into the middle terminal which is the direct run to the main battery,
    2) Run thick gauge power and ground wires from the front all the way to the battery location in the cab, and
    3) Install SDHQ's under hood power solution kit

Arguments about each of the above solutions are as follows:

    1) An offroad vendor suggested the use of tapping directly into the fusebox. While this is the easiest and most convenient, I'd caution this approach as this is only rated at 150 amps. While the center connection is rated for 350 amps, some winches like a Warn can pull a full 420 amps under full load.

    2) Running thick ga wire from the bumper to the rear cabin will be long and costly. When I contacted Warn's support department, they don't recommend a power run longer than 78" nor do they recommend running 1 or 0 gauge.

    3) The SDHQ under hood power solution seems to be the best option for us at the moment. I'll post a link to the video here, but at nearly $1k, it's a pricey solution that brings power to under your hood making our issues go away.

Here's some pics of my SDHQ install:

Big fan of SDHQ but they have lost their mind with that pricing.. I was the first person to put a winch on a hybrid and I went 1/0 wiring from the winch to the battery and have had zero issues.... using my winch 3x lol.

Yep that pricing is nuts, but my reasoning for this setup is for my piece of mind. I'm going with Warn's recommendation of winch run length and gauge in the unlikely event I winch at full draw.

old me would have done the same, but 2 kids and a wife not working means doing it the cheaper route. I talked with a few high end shops and they told me this was totally fine and how they would do the instal.

Has anyone here done a front bumper delete and added a more aggressive and raised bumper to the front? I have a '23 and running into issue where every bumper shows in the fine print "Not compatible with hybrid". I won't be doing any of the installation myself, but don't want to order a bumper that just won't work - though I can't see what is drastically different up front from a non hybrid model

What am I missing that is different about the hybrid bumper from the other models? - OTHER than the air dam, which I don't have

Nothing, the c4 bumper works with the hybrid no problems, as does the CBI

This may seem like a dumb question, but there's been a lot of discussion on this thread about running wires to the 12v battery under the seat. My question is, how and where do you physically run the wires to the battery under the back seat? Do you drill a hole in the plastic under the seat, or can you come up through the bottom under the carpet, or something else? I'm looking to install a permanent trickle charger to plug in on our -40 degree nights up here North of 60. If I can figure out how to get the wire cleanly out of the battery bay I'll probably just run an extension cord from outside under the door.

Does anyone have a picture of the location? It's especially hard to find at -40 in the dark!
