Soundproofing a room makes a house unsellable?

 

Fiberglass insulation in the interior walls/floors and triple pane windows. The ideal living area would be heavy cinder block walls and concrete floors.

 

Basically, buy a German-built home

 

First off, I would look into "Sound Deadening Drywall" it's much denser, and 2 sheets stacked will give you quite a boost in the quiet dept.! Also consider, since you are going to rip out the old drywall, put a fill of "Rock Wool" in those walls. I have 6" walls filled filled with the stuff, and the drywall. Also have dual Glaze windows, but there is more noise coming in thru the windows than the walls.

I helped install this stuff in a duplex once, we just screwed it over the existing walls. Can't comment too much beyond that.

 

For cheap and ugly, egg crate foam. I assume you want it looking better than that.

You want to buy some 'hat channel'. They're metal strips that you screw to the studs, or even better, existing drywall. Then you'll screw another layer of drywall to the strips. What they'll do, is space the new layer of drywall about 1/2" away, so there's not a solid connection to the framed wall. That cuts down the sound traveling thru vibration. Then you want to seal every seam and penetration well. Around every light fixture box, electrical box, air duct, and around every door and window. There are a number of products specifically for sound sealing, but even just caulking will make a huge difference. If you really wanna get crazy, you can frame a second wall inside the room with a couple inch air space, and insulate the wall. As others mentioned, there are different types of drywall and insulation for sound. The hat channels make the most difference, as long as its sealed properly, in my experience, and I've done alot of soundproofing. Hat channels go on the wall and ceiling. You may find them called a different name.

But really, it might be worth calling a professional insulation company, they may be able to put new/additional insulation in an existing wall cavity without removing the wall board.
If white noise does it they make little noise generators just for that, that’s certainly the cheapest and quickest solution.

We've hit a few trails like that so far. I don't think I realized how far up Ave of Giants was, we ended up doing Armstrong on the way up to our current spot between Manchester and Elk, our staging ground to hit some longer hikes, along with a few shorter ones. We did Caspar Creek and several Russian Gulch trails yesterday (the kids like falls and redwoods) along with Glass Beach as a wind-down. I think we're doing more water-side stuff today, probably starting on Navarro River and working our way out to the ocean. It's awesome here, but about 1000x more ticks here than what I found in PA or ME which I thought were notably "bad" (until here). How the hell do y'all deal with them?

Beerwise, met an old friend and his wife who biked over at Anderson Valley Brewing (the road over the mountains was f'n nuts!) which ended up being more boring than I expected given the reviews. Too color-inside-the-lines for me, all but one of the IPAs were pretty basic. Also hit North Coast yesterday, which again for me was cool but known beer entity (Foggy Day tastes way better off the tap), but I wish I would've understood you can't actually see the brewery, and the pub/gift shop/brewery are all on different corners of an intersection. Beers were solid, but Cooperage was still hands-down the shining star so far, blindingly so. Wanted to hit Overtime Brewing while up in Fort Bragg, but they're closed on Monday, bummer.

 

I need to take pics of how/where mine are installed, but this shows a pic. As long as you're on the cabin side of the translucent sheet, there's no issue really. Even if unsealed, you can always bag things.

I've got a pair of 6x9's i wanna run stereo in the bed, prolly boxed. Prolly wanna run 6x9's in the front doors, too.

how can i route the trucks stereo power to the rear if i need it? Like take all the power from the cab. Like a switch near the tailgate that diverts all power aft? Dont leave my doors open.

Random question, but you guys seem to know enough about everything. I looked at a 73 Ford manual pickup for my 17 year old last night. Super cool and smelled just like my grandpa. Brakes were really weak though, not mushy, just no power. The pedal feel was fine and it didn't drop to the floor. Is that typical of old trucks, or do you think new pads and rotors up front would fix that.

My son's a good driver, but he's 17 and doesn't always see traffic patterns ahead so I want him to have decent brakes.

 

Does it have a brake booster? Might just be manual brakes

 

I learned to drive in a '69 Ford-- not sure about a '73-- which had manual brakes. Achieved best results by "pumping" the pedal. So in crisis braking, I sometimes revert to this. Which set me up well to not miss the ABS fuse in my play truck. So there's that.

 

Aaargh! Manual brakes and steering are not something to enjoy. I had to do it at one time in my life. Never again. Almost like crank windows but much worse

 

I love my hand crank windows in the '05.

 

Only good for getting out of a submerged vehicle, IMO

 

And forcing kids to do their own work.

 

You love leaning all the way into he passenger seat to roll down the window?
I certainly don't miss that. My first truck I drove for about a decade was manual everything. I do miss the manual transmission sometimes though.

Hey dude, I was searching for which oil to put in there (reading your thread “So you wanna…?” At the moment) and came across this post. Is it the same oil front and back? And I assume the correct oil will have something on the bottle about LSD-safe?
And since we’re on the subject of maintenance, I’m searching for the grease points in the driveline. I found zerk fittings on the U joints. Any other places? A quick look and I didn’t see anything at the carrier. Anything to service there?
Sorry for the newb questions, but my last 4x4 was a 1992 Toy with the 22re. Completely different animal, for sure.
