2022 Tundra 6CYL pouring white smoke from exhaust

Took my '22 Tundra to the dealer today to get the 15k mile maintenance and on the way home after picking it up I noticed the engine was bogging down and then a huge white cloud behind my truck.

No dash lights, no codes on the computer. Had it towed back the dealer. The service manager without looking at it thinks they overfilled the oil while topping it off and oil leaked into the cylinders. I dont agree, as that smoke would be much darker and the smoke would be smelly.

Is there a chance my head gasket is blown? If it does end up being overfilled with oil, what else do I need to get them to check/change? Spark plugs? Change out the oil and filter?

 

Check the level of the antifreeze in the rad.

I'm betting they overfilled the oil.

2nd gens take almost 8 quarts. I don't know what a 3rd gen takes, but I bet it's less and the tech got confused.

 

There was a time when overfilling the oil would damage the catalytic converters.

Not too sure if that is the case with these newer vehicles.

 

It will still affect the cats. As long as it's corrected and the truck is run hard, the oil will burn off.

 

So you left the truck there and they gave you a rental?

Too much oil in a turbo motor is a very bad thing. Too much oil in the cylinders? Err no. Too much oil with a turbo, well the oil had no place to go.
That can cause a leak on the turbine and compressor ends.

Generally too much oil in a motor will start leaks. I had a Sonata v6 that the dealer way overfilled. I ran the motor for a bit and saw smoke from under the hood.
Took the plastic over off and it looked like an oil "water park".

I only drove about 3 mi before I noticed the issue. I had the truck towed back and the dealer said they would get it looked at first thing in the morning.

But yeah they gave me their loaner Tacoma for the night so I could get home and get to work in the morning while they work on it.

I'm hoping it's not something major. I do like the truck but I'm definitely concerned since it's the first year of a new generation and a new engine. If it does end up being too much oil in the engine, should I get them to state that in writing that was what the problem was in case there's an issue down the road with the engine?

 

The extra oil does not " leak" into the cylinders.

The oil is aerated from the constant beating by the connecting rods. The level was too high and the rod ends were beating the oil into a vapor as the rod ends spun thru the oil.

The oil/air vapor is pulled back into the intake and burned along with the gasoline that is injected.

All engines pull the extra crankcase gasses back into the intake and use them for combustion. In the case of too much oil in the sump, you will be burning these combustion gasses as well as the aerated engine oil.

As long as you get that extra oil out fairly soon, the cats can burn off that extra oil residue. The key is soon.

If you get a check engine light in the next 2 months, you might want to exercise that warrantee.

 

Yep, too much oil causes white smoke. Exactly what the post above need mentioned. You caught it way early so should be ok.

 

They are going to repair the engine as they best as they can and it'll be covered. I'd like the whole reason and resolve documented somehow. Doubt they'll do that.
Maybe on the completed workorder?

I'll squash the "you should get a new truck" thing that some will say. Not going to happen.
(only way they'll take it back is if they get you into a "new truck for just a little more money" game)

Such a lame mistake to do. Quality check on service performed should be priority one.
Nobody likes to go back to the service area for the same problem or multiple times per week.

 

3rd gens take 7.7 qts.

 

anything in particular I should insist on them checking to verify no problems with?

I was thinking fouled spark plugs, oil leaking out anywhere else, catalytic converters, ect.

 

my bet the lube tech is pretty green and forgot to drain the oil and over filled it 7 liters of oil.

 

Not to derail but does anyone know why my frame is weeping oil? I don’t see a puddle when I park so not sure.

 

The dealer did call this morning and confirmed that they believe the issue was them adding too much oil. They changed the oil and said everything is good now.

I would just monitor the vehicle until the next oil change. Overfilling the oil doesn’t necessarily lead to instant failure of those components.

I have not looked under a gen 3 but I've seen situations in the past where the tech drained the transmission fluid and refilled the oil so it was a double whammy.

Insist they check transmission fluid levels.

Most engines can handle 1/2 to 1 quart overfill before it starts puking white smoke. This must have been significantly overfilled.

Just another reason to do your own work, And whenever the dealer does anything you double and triple check before you pull out of the lot.

When I had the free oil changes the tech would always get pissed because before I would drive it out of their fancy receiving bay I would pop the hood and check the oil.

I told them that I don't trust dealers and it's always better safe than sorry.
