What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

After attempting to bleed the right rear brake when setting the gauge on the Speedi-Bleed to 15 psi, it dropped to 10 psi the other day.

With the pressure coming from the front tire, I thought it should have stayed the same. Set it to 15 psi and tried it again and the same thing happened. Also noticed I can't fill the fluid in the reservoir to the fill line beforehand since the fluid jumps up 1/2 inch in the reservoir under 15 psi till it's at the fill line.

WTF?? Any of you Speedi-Bleed users see this behavior? I'll have to double check my tire pressure today just to make sure. Edit: Looks to still be 28 lbs, down 2 from 30.

 

Start adjustment from 0 or 30ish psi?

Iirc you have to start from lower and turn up to desired psi.

 

Will it gravity bleed? Cause mine will.

 

No, for the Speedi-Bleed, it doesn't say anything like that in the instructions BUT the fluid was low in the bottle (1/4 full) so I'm waiting till I do it again with an actual brake bleeder wrench to see if the problem comes back.

My thought is that it may be leaking air at the reservoir if the fluid is going up 1/2" under 15 psi and the regulator is losing 5 psi after the rear wheel brake bleeder screw is opened, drained some and then closed.

 

That's an option but isn't it 1 hour wait per line?

 

No, more like an hour for 4. But i might've touched the pedal to get it going with the hose in a jar method. My fronts were dirty, but the rears and load valve were clear green.went with dot4 because why not, & adjusted the parking brakes with the truck running on stands. Made both rears stop the truck in 4lo on the same e-brake click.

 

Yeah, just bleeding the right rear, it was a dark golden yellow. I can only imagine what the front look like. Wish I knew it was what? 15 minutes each? That doesn’t seem right for my truck. That right rear was just weeping when it wasn’t under pressure.

 

Gotta have the hose, so the weight of fluid past the bleeder drags it through.

 

Yea, maybe 30 for the rears. But i was running both at a time, and topping off the reservoir every 10 min.

 

Gravity is not the way. Gotta force those bubble out

 

Pressure bled when dad was available. Didnt take any time at all, since everything had already been flushed.

 

I never realized I would need a brake bleeder wrench since I was the one typically pumping the brakes when I did it before and my dad bled them without a hose (found that out yesterday), by just letting it squirt out. haha

What’s the issue? Why can’t you just use a box end or flare nut wrench?

 

I can’t tighten the fitting with the hose on it shut due to the lip of the backplate getting in the way. I also can’t get the wrench off and over the hose to advance it (hose OD too thick).

 

Slip wrench over bleeder then attach hose. You shouldn’t need that much rotation to get fluid out. I’ve never had an issue with the backing plates. Bend it out of your way for more room but remember to bend it back.

 

I can only turn it about 1/8th of a turn (1 inch+) and the fluid is barely coming out. Backing plate is in pretty bad shape. Any distortion of it and it’ll come apart from the rust.

Crack free with no hose, then lightly shut bleeder. Then add hose and use open end to open and close at an angle where you can get enough sweep.


Do your wrenches have an offset or are they straight?

 

Pressure drop when you are bleeding or just sitting there? The bottle does fill the reservoir past the fill line if I recall, but not enough for me to care. You can always empty the bottle and run the level down a bit. If your regulator is low, go to 20 and see if there is a change in pressure.

 

I emailed the guy at Speedi-bleed and he told me what you stated is normal although I didn’t see the level return after I removed the pressure unless that’s normal as well.

The concern he had was with the pressure gauge going down 5 psi after bleeding one brake.

I’m too repeat it and take notes on everything. A video if possible too.

Yes, it went down while I bled the rear brake. I did go up it to 17 and saw it go down to 12 afterwards when I tried again.

 

Sounds like a bad regulator, doesn't it?

 

I’m not sure myself. I don’t usually play around with pneumatic equipment but my luck has been less than stellar lately.

People always tell me I would be valuable as the guy to find a fault in faultless system because chances are, I’m the guy who always find it.

 

And it works…only 2 hours, maybe less. Ready for install this weekend on round 2.

 

Wrenches don’t have much of an offset which is the issue. Open end has none.

 

Little heat and a vice and you can make your own offset wrench.

 

Found the proper 10 mm wrench and it works! Forgot someone gave me a gear wrench flex head set for Christmas one year. Now I don’t need to wait till the middle of next week on a Lisle 10 mm brake wrench. Good thing too; I’ve got air in my rear brakes from the 1st go-around.

 

I've never used a Speedi-Bleeder, but I've had a Motive pressure bleeder for years and noticed the same thing: it overfills the master cylinder reservoir and can get messy. After using it a couple times, I realize that it's just the way it works, so I stopped putting brake fluid in the Motive altogether and instead just use it as a pressure source. So I fill the master cylinder reservoir (actually over-fill it a little), attach the Motive, pressurize it, and bleed one wheel at a time. When that wheel is done, I depressurize the system, refill the reservoir, re-pressurize and move on the the next wheel. As long as you're mindful of the fluid level in the reservoir, it works really well. I also like that I don't have to worry about old fluid in my Motive being pushed into my braking system.

 

What did you end up doing on this? Switchback with turn signal? Too lazy right now to search for a build you did...you end up doing the demon eyes? I have all this shit sitting in a box I just got.

 

Made some templates/ test pieces so I can gussy up my new custom skid plate.
Ordered some center punches and hopefully have this bad boy mounted by Monday!

The same way I use my custom built bleeder. Just as a 15psi pressure source.

I'll even give a couple pumps of the pedal, as the positive pressure keeps it from sucking air back in. Bonus if used with russel speed bleeders.
