Engine failure

Hey guys! I am a new Tundra owner and my engine just failed at 10700 miles. No mods besides better tires and same size as factory. I tow once a week a 5x10 trailer that maybe weighs 2500 lbs? Unsure if I trust these trucks anymore since I am not the first one. I will update you all on what they say. All I know is it started grinding, whining, and lost all oil pressure then I shut it off. Seems toyota is going to take care of me quickly and put me in a brand new tundra to drive while mine is being repaired, but I am not sure it that is enough unfortunately. Damn, that sounds awful. Sorry to hear it happened to you or anyone but when you build 100,000 of anything there is always a percentage of flawed products.

 

Did you notice any signs of an issue before it totally failed? Grinding or whining when towing or under load? Wondering if there’s anything owners should be on the look out for?

 

Sell your replacement Tundra Toyota will give you, buy a 2021. Or pretty much any gen 2 model year, and a lot of beer.

 

It is true.. I just wouldn't expect engine failure from toyota. Minor things will get worked out.

 

Not really. The grinding started on deceleration in tow mode. As soon as I heard grinding I barely made it 4 miles back to my shop. It went from bad noise to no oil pressure really fast. My trailer is light I barely notice its back there.
I felt like my fuel maybe started to take a dip the past few weeks. But that could just be me.

 

Sounds like they are going to put a new complete engine in. I would like to trade up but I am unsure what room I have to bargain right now. How far will the dealer/toyota go without the long process of lemon law

They are giving you a brand new truck or put you in a brand new while yours is being repaired?

 

They gave me a truck to drive. I should rephrase that. My truck is being repaired and given back to me.

Definitely ask for more....WARRANTY!

 

The next unlucky fellow with a dead engine need to take oil sample and send it for analysis, before the truck gets to dealer.

 

Ask for a longer warranty like I start at 0 miles again? I do appreciate the speed of this process so far but I got lucky I wasn't stranded like some folks and I got my trailer back. I would definitely consider a buy back if they offered it but it seems like they are just throwing motors in so far. I'd like to hear from the others to see what toyota has done for them.

 

They are replacing a short block from what I read here in the forum.

 

The oil looked like if you spilt fresh oil on the floor after your turned some real nasty rotors. So much metal shavings I could not believe it. That was just the dipstick.

 

I'm more curious if it had any gas or water in it.

 

I had my friend who is a tech come take a look. He was curious and said the oil smelt like gas. But I'm just relaying what I've heard/seen. A sample would be best.

 

Looks like the best gen 3 owners can do until Toyota figures it out, is to replace oil every 5k miles or even sooner, and use a thicker oil.

 

No it's not true. Sad to say and some don't like to hear it but the 3rd Gen isn't living up to Toyota reliability. I could understand minor things, but we have seen enough engine failures, which isn't common and especially with such low mies.

Is the 3rd gen using 20 or 16 oil? 20 is like water, can't imagine what 16 looks like.

 

What are you talking about? Don't you know it is 0.000003% or 0.0000000000000003% engine failure rate in gen3?

Btw, I've tried Red Line 0w20 in my gen 2.5, which is closer to w30 weight - it started smelling burnt oil from the tail pipe on cold mornings. I think the oil rings in 3UR-FE have a very low tension and they can't scrape a heavier oil well. Guess, in summer or in hotter climate heavier oil makes sense, but not in New England in winter.

 

Well some of Toyotas 4 bangers had crap ass oil rings. I can't remember if the tundra at some point also had them or if they went a different route with the oil rings.

 

my guess is a bad batch of bearings on earlier builds. They had problems in 07 with the new 5.7 at the time as well.

it happens, doesnt mean the entire thing is crap, as much as some would like to make happen.

 

Ye olde rings will scrape the cylinders to death if let any 0w20 water in. They must be a low tension rings.

 

What I don't get is, this isn't a redesigned engine. The 5.7 was brand new. But hey just about everything today is not what it use to be.

 

What do you mean exactly by bad bearings? When the engine is assembled, the crank-bearing gap is measured, so the tolerance is exactly what it should be. After that the bearings never contact with crankshaft.

 

I guess Im confused, my point was the 5.7 was new and so is this one, both had some problems in the 1st year or 2.
