I know you’re not complaining but enjoy the time spent. While we butted heads later in life, there’s days I really do miss mine, who would be same age as yours next month.

Chisels are like kids. They're only as sharp as you make em.

my dad was built with terrible mojo. While alone i catch only green lights, while taking him to the store we catch the overfilled lawn trailers and sunday tourists. And he walks slow enough to get passed by 3 familys to get to an empty register. But you're right, i enjoy spending time with him, and only half is the schadenfreude.
When he helps me work on stuff, i think he breaks stuff on purpose to drag it out.

I would've taken a pneumatic hammer to the butt end of the bolt, I'm fairly confident it would've knocked things free.

No way that bolt was coming out without the bolt being cut due to the metal sleeve and partial black rubber bushing seized to the bolt. Maybe a torch to expand the sleeve, but without any oxygen or acetylene in his full size tanks, that wasn't going to happen.

Crack torch to the bolt, then pneumatic punch/hammer to the bolt.

I don't think a propane torch is hot enough to do much, IMO other than make a lot of toxic black smoke from burning the bushing.

I do think having a pneumatic hammer and some new cold chisels for future events certainly couldn't hurt though.

That's what you want, right there. But use a fan so you're not inhaling the smoke.

Yeah, but that doesn't release the metal sleeve that's frozen to the bolt.

I thought the metal sleeve had the rubber inside of it, and the rubber was frozen to the bolt?

Other way around. Metal sleeve is frozen to the bolt with the rubber on the outside.

Ah. I'd still be tempted to use heat, but I think what would work better is getting some vice grips on it tight, wedging against the axle tube, and ripping it w/IH.

I mean it's possible that since the hole in the axle tab is only large enough for the bolt to pass through and not the sleeve that an impact hammer could have pushed out the bolt but I didn't have one and if you knew my father, he had zero patience for anything. His driveway, his rules. (You either make it happen with what you got, or go home crying)

Like I said earlier, I may pick up an IR impact hammer and some cold chisels for future endeavors. My only torching capability would be if I picked up one of those $300-$400 portable oxy-acetylene tank kits at home depot but I have no where to store it. Propane is useless IMO.

As someone who's done battle with this multiple times (hooray rustbelt) it's not coming out without applying a lot of heat directly to the sleeve and even then it's not guaranteed. Without an oxy torch it's definitely not. 9/10 times you'll bend the mount instead of the bolt coming out.

Easiest solution is to cut the bolt and take the pieces to the hardware store and grab a new one.

On a TN truck? Shouldn't be necessary. Just cut the top nut off with a Dremel cutoff wheel.

Just a note.... Vice grips on a bolt head are okay if needed but never on a nut. All they do is bend the nut so now it's elongated and adding pressure to the bolt. Ends up being counter intuitive.

I'm aware, and that's not what I was suggesting. I was recommending to hold the sleeve with vice grips, then banging on the bolt with an impact, on the head side, since there's no nut showing in the pic.

The vice grips, once pinned, would hold the sleeve from moving, while the impact would rapidly hammer the bolt back and forth, and likely free it up.

Even if the vice grips were to deform the sleeve somehow (unlikely, but maybe possible), that would probably still work in his favor.

Oh I wasn't saying you were suggesting that sorry for the misunderstanding...
I just wanted to make a vice grip statement :p.

And seeing this reminds me ... I always call a bench vise a bench vice and am realizing now, they're vise grips, not vice grips.

Has the front bumper skin been repainted, or is the new ride a two-tone?

EDIT: Or maybe the hood and lower grille trim were repainted?

EDIT2: Oh snap! Is this what you landed instead of a GX or LX?! I remember you were mulling over what to get recently!

It's two tone! I'm going to take some more interesting photos in the near future after I get it cleaned up proper like.

IT IS! After finding the GX I wanted was pretty clapped out due to frame rot I looked at 4Runners for a day or 2 and decided they were dismally small inside, really liked a highlander hybrid but they're crazy expensive and gave up all together deciding the smart move was to just stay in the van and deal with it.....the next morning this popped up on the 1st Gen Sequoia page for sale down in Richmond....went and test drove it, talked the guy down on the price a little bit due to it needing a battery and brakes and brought it home. To appease the wife I've ordered a head unit with carplay from crutchfield, one of those fancy new style grille guards and I plan to plasti dip the wheels to give it a more modern look...after changing all 4 rotors and pads

How long do you think they have needed to be changed? I swapped new ones into the front at 150k ish, and they were both still good. Obviously the new ones improved the ride, but the old ones had not lost their seal or anything and were still working. I have been procrastinating changing the rears, but doubt you need me to explain why.

Can you even buy real MAPP gas anywhere? The stuff they have now doesn't even get 10% hotter than Propane. I know, I bought it.

Dying to go out and finish my rear shocks but most of my neighbors and their extended families are here and the HOA....well, they won't let me do anything.

May have to consolidate it with the brake bleed job when that adapter gets here next Tuesday.
