If a shop had the shocks off, no spring and still couldn't rotate, I do not think applying more leverage is going to be a good idea. Aluminum preload nut on steel body. If they are built like Fox/King, it's not an easy replacement. Shock would have to be torn down, reservoir fittings removed for new preload nut to be threaded on. This is time consuming, which equals a costly repair.

From reading OP post the shop wasn't able to remove the springs at all. I'm a bit confused because I have 800lb springs on and and can easily remove them from the shock without dealing with preload adjuster.

Yeah. I apologize for not being more clear.

The shop removed the shock and placed on a machine to compress the springs to try and make it easier to loosen the adjustor nut and reduce the 3" of preload. That way they could remove the 700 pound spring and add a 800 pound spring.

I think the tension the springs were adding to the adjustor nut made it hard to loosen

So with a spring compressor, they were not able to compress it enough for the spring to be loose? Ultimately relieving all pressure from the preload nut?

    No, they were not.

After trying it for awhile and getting worried about their safety, they decided not to try anymore. Then the decision to cut the adjustor nut came up. And just to replace them.

Ah, curious to know what kind of compressor they used. It would be worth going to a shop with a proper spring compressor that can handle that big of a spring. Keep in mind, the spring would still have to be compressed/removed to replace the preload nut, even if it needed to be cut off.

Yeah. That's what JCBerb had asked about too. I guess I can ask the guy and see. You'd figured he'd have a good set up for that. That's all he does is repair/replace shocks. And was recommended by a local off road shop.

What's funny is he never got back to me about a price of what it would cost to cut the adjustor nut off and rebuild the shocks. I'm thinking he doesn't want anything to do with the job since it was so much of a hassle. LOL.

Thing is, if the shop could not compress the springs enough to remove them from the shock, then you probably do not have to cut the adjuster nut at all, maybe all you need is to have the spring compressed enough to remove tension to allow you to make the adjustment...? Unless you've confirmed the threads are damaged. At this point, I am curious to see how you resolve this.

Some of these places focus on standard quick turnaround type jobs. In the time it takes them to figure out how to get the coil of the shock they could have probably run through a few quick jobs...

They can come recommended but I recently learned that does not mean much, had an offroad place around me recommend a place for alignments after going to Icons...well they didn't really know how to do the alignment with the after-market parts.

Funny you mentioned that. He came in on a Saturday to do the job. Usually is closed. And he had plans later.

I am also curious to see how this turns out. I'll keep you updated.
