Something failing that wouldn't necessarily throw a code:
    • Corrosion in the power/ground cables between batt/alt/fuse-relay box or to chassis in case of ground - you're probably not going to see a code for this condition, you're just going to see the vehicle doing weird electical-gremlin-y shit
    • Fuel pump - sometimes you may get misfire codes or maybe fuel trim? But if it were having electronic issues where pump fatigued after 2-3 minutes, which isn't unheard of w/electronics, it likely wouldn't toss a code
    • Fuel pump relay, Fuel resistor (which engages via the fuel pump relay, to kick the pump into low-speed mode), fuel pressure regulator
    • Fuel filter except it's pretty much never the fuel filter, like, never-ever, at least on these trucks
But you get the gist - these aren't items that the ECU can effectively monitor, and may toss out a red herring code. Same way the ECU may toss out efficiency codes for the cats on your truck when it's actually an O2 sensor failing to calculate delta on cat efficiency properly.

Does your truck have an alarm? Just asking because you mentioned the truck locked itself when the old battery died. Could also allow truck to start and then cause it to shut off.

Another thought, check your air filter and maf.

Any time my engine dies like this it’s…

    1.alternator gremlins (diode or regulator)
    2.battery cable loose
    3.corrosion inside terminal/lug connection

I am prepping for a cable upgrade as well

Update: The garage replaced a really dirty fuel filter thinking that might be the problem but no change. Then they cleaned the throttle body and that did the trick. So weird!

Truck is back on the road with a brand new set of tires!

Thanks to everyone who helped on this thread!

Probably the ECU had learned how to idle with throttle body dirty....then got reset when you replaced the battery and was trying to re-learn.

Yup, as stated in this thread, it's never the fuel filter. Like, never ever.

Glad to hear you got it running. I wouldn't have expected it to be a dirty TB causing the issue, but what Aerindel said is a logical explanation. Either that, or the shop forgot something and was trying to cover their ass :D

Awesome! Glad that worked, now I know what to check if this happens to me. Yeah, the bunch here is fantastic.

Ya that could be the issue as well but I kind of trust this shop. They showed me the filter and it looked really dirty. I felt like the price was fair after all the labour time that was involved.

Thanks again for all the help!!!

Isn't there something with the throttle position sensor relearning on these after battery disconnect? Throttle body is moving to a different position and not able to learn before stalling?

Could be as easy as cleaning the throttle body and MAF. . .

These fellas have a lot more experience than me though.

NVM, didn't get to page 2 before messaging.
