Wow, didn't expect to kick off a debate in calculated percentages as a decimal lol.

Yes, my mistake. I was typing quickly in between meetings and added the percent symbol when it shouldn't have been there. In my defense, i just had a meeting where we were throwing around percentages so it was stuck in my head

If I was to replace my truck one of these days (if we got a bigger travel trailer) thinking about a 2024 gmc 2500 6.6l gas engine … wouldn’t want to get any half ton other then the 2.5 tundra

wow, my plan too! No over-stressed engine, no stop/start/worst feature ever in an ice vehicle, not overly complicated, easy to work on, proven robust engine. It’s about the most perfect truck out there. Toyota used to have the closest thing to the 2500 6.6 GM trucks. Now it’s no different than all the other junk half tons.

@wedemmoez thank you for your responses. I’m curious, what brand engine oil do/will you use in your ‘22 Tundra, and what viscosity (0W-20, 5W-30)?

One of my coworkers wifemobiles just ate the motor on her Ford Explorer Sport 3.5L Ecoboost at 120k miles. Ford wanted 9k to put a new motor in. He said to GF'ed, sold the exploder for 6k as is and purchased something else.

If I HAD to buy a NEW pickup today, it would be GMC AT4.
    AT4X if I could afford it..:D

If my 2014 was totaled and I had to buy ANY pickup, it would be a 2019 thru 2021 Tundra Pro or Platinum.

I thought that one also about the new truck, I tested the 6.2 at4 gmc. The seats were so terrible I ended the test drive early and it rode shitty.

one odd thing, the new shifter gm has up is reverse and you have to push a button for park, really odd.

    I've never driven either one.
    I've only sat in a Gen 3, a $55K SR5 with a manual seat.

Perhaps if I joined a GMC truck forum members would be reporting as many issues with them as the Gen 3 Tundra owners do.

I'd like to keep my 2014 as long as possible.

As to the GMC shifter, my wife's XT5 is pretty similar.
You can't shift into gear unless you push the button on the side and it has a button on top to put it in park.
I drive my Tundra with my hand resting on the shifter.
If I do that in her car, and I accidentally pull it back, it goes into manual.
    I hate driving her car.

nothing wrong with that, the 2014 will run for a long time if you take care of it.

as far as the new trucks, the grass isn't always greener, the big 3 aren't exactly a model of QDR and long term lost cost maintenance , I trust toyota more to handle anything that pops up.

after all, with how complicated all of these trucks are now a days, chances are a problem or two will come up no matter what you have.

I haven't done an oil change on mine yet, only at ~6k miles, but it'll be a full synthetic 0w20 at 10k. I don't usually look for a specific brand, just whatever happens to be on sale at Costco that week. Usually its Mobil1.

Thank you @wedemmoez however I have to say…that hurts. I was betting that with you being an engineer you would have a very specific brand of oil and 3k or 5k change intervals.

I’m in first oil change at 1-1.5k miles and no more than 5k there after camp. I use Mobil 1 but am considering moving to Amsoil for the turbo enigine.

I just got my new F150 Lariat out of the shop after 43 consecutive days for electronic gremlins. I got it home today and now the right front turn signal and running lights are flickering when the truck is not running and locked. The vibe at the Ford dealer service department isn't good. I'm not alone. I drove an AT4 with the 6.2 yesterday. Seemed much less powerful off the line than a Tundra or my F150. I think the new GMC interior is the best of the bunch.

The Toyota dealer is cruising along. I'm sure they have problems as discussed in this thread but the dealer in Asheville has zero zombie trucks on the lot like mine has been for Ford. At least Toyota tries to trouble shoot a problem and find root cause. Ford is so overwhelmed they just put their fingers in their ears and hope the problem goes away.

Coming down now but plenty of people will, knowing the 5.7 engine (oil changes on time) can go the distance.

I'm not going to set a 3k or 5k oil change interval arbitrarily. I'm an engineer, i'm using science and data to find out what the ideal OCI is for my usage. I'm sciencing the shit out of this lol

I usually send my oil samples to Blackstone for analysis, and they'll recommend an oil change interval based on the data they see. For your first oil change, they recommend using the manufacturer interval, on the Tundra its 10k. I've been doing that on all my cars for 10+ years. On my 4Runner and Tacoma they recommended a 12k mile interval. On my Porsche they recommended once a year since I only drive it ~4k miles/yr. I have all of the PDFs of my oil change history going back to 2012 when I got my very first car and their comments saved.

As far as brand preference, Blackstone did a report in 2017 that showed (with data!!) that as long as you're using one of the major oil brands, there isn't a quantifiable difference in oil performance or engine wear. For some reason my bookmark on their site for it is borked. Here's a Drive article that summarizes it. I'll grab whatever major brand is on sale at Costco, and usually it ends up being Mobil1.

You joke, but I do a lot of electrical related work at Toyota now, even though my undergrad degrees are in mechanical engineering and physics.

It does suck when you are the one having the problems, but Ford does sell 10x the amount of trucks that Toyota does, so it is just percentages they will have a higher number of trucks with problems. Plenty of people I know with 21+ F-150s and F-250s and no one has had problems. They are out there for all brands. I had to deal with a GMC dealership for my parents Terrain and they were terrible.

It’s true he did, but do you feel comfortable knowingly letting what is poor condition oil in your engine for the remaining 9k miles to provide lesser protection? I wouldn’t on my new 60k truck, personally. I’d change it for cheap insurance.

Their recommendation was to remove that oil from service, actually.
