    Hey guys,

Kinda new around here. Recently purchased a 2001 Tundra 2wd Limited with 156,000 miles on it. It did not have a ton of service records but the transmission was replaced around 50k miles years ago. The truck runs great, no shifting issues, etc. Had what looked like a valve cover gasket leak, I ended up tightening the bolts on it and it hasn't leaked since. Had the water pump and timing belt replaced first couple of days of ownership. To my knowledge everything else is original. My question is, what kind of life can I expect out of this truck? I know the 4.7 2UZ-FE engine is reliable, but just want to make sure I made a good purchase.

    Appreciate any feedback!

With routine maintenance, you can expect another 300K-500K miles out of the engine.

What kind of transmission was put in place of the original? A jasper?

I wonder why the trans was replaced, That isn’t common.

Welcome! Post some pics here, read the “So you bought/want to buy…” thread in the stickied posts at the top of this forum (I recommend reading it a few times), and stick around. All the stickied posts are worth a quick skim just to orient you to the resources (data-wise and, most importantly, people-wise) on this forum.

The general consensus around here is that your truck isn’t even remotely high mileage. Just getting broken in.

The 00-mid 03 did have the weak planetary gear. I'm wondering if this was one of the ones that got that.

Please read this sticky thread, it literally covers just about everything: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

    150k isn't "high mile"

But yeah, there are some things to worry about. That thread will explain it. Timing belt and frame rust are the biggest. Hope you didn't get ripped off on the latter.

The Transmission thing has always stymied me. My '02 Transmission has never been serviced (not even a Fluid Change). I have had the vehicle serviced regularly at the Toyota Dealership where I purchased it. I inquired a couple of times about changing the transmission fluid and I was asked by the Service Advisor and the Master Technician(s) if I was having problems? I told them "No". Their subsequent reply was a stern: "Don't F--k with it".

Think some were affected and some weren’t like most reported issues. My trans is still fine at 267k miles. One pan drop with filter change when I purchased at 99k miles and one drain and fill at around 212k. Done all the hard things with it, towed heavy, launched boats, 2k# dirt in the bed, drove like an A-hole at times. 1-2 shift has had a little thud to it when cold for 10+ years. Super smooth shifter when warmed up. And I agree with @shifty` , 150k miles isn’t high mileage for these. Over 300k miles is when I start to get impressed. Not for the motor necessarily, but that a truck full of varied components is still going for that long. Many with only wear and tear maintenance performed.

appreciate everyone’s reply! And thanks for the welcomes. Definitely not affected by rust. It’s been a Texas truck its whole life, so no rust concerns at all. Even the guy at the dealership when the Timing Belt was done said it was in immaculate condition for the frame.

Haven’t heard of the gear issue with a few of them, but I’m wondering if that’s what happened. It was replaced about 10 years ago and hasn’t had anything done to it, at least from the carfax.

Yeah, the grenading planetary is something that only happened on the earlier gens, but I think that was a byproduct of towing larger loads in OD.

If your truck didn't see a ton of tow time, or was towing lighter things like a bass boat or something, probably not gonna cause you issues.

Ask again when you actually have high miles lol.

These are million mile engines. Your frame will rust out long before your engine fails.

I just hit 330K on mine last week.
