This is awesome. I love the new grilles (compared to mine), but that OEM cover looks like hell. Your design makes it seamless. Nice job.

    Thank you!

This is my 6th iteration, I've been playing with design size and materials. I wanted it to overhang the bottom by a few mm to match the style of the bottom row. That was a little problematic with printing and the ABS warping, so in the end I just printed without the gap and used a hack saw to trim, which worked really well.

It is far from perfect, there is about a 2-3mm gap at the top. If I do a 7th iteration I might address that.

My biggest challenge will be trying to match the paint. I hastely painted one before and the temps were not great amd I rush laying the paint on too thick. I'm trying to decide between a matte finish or satin however we just got a 11" of snow this morning so that will need to wait

I see what you’re saying about the gap, and appreciate your attention to detail. Even close up it looks really good. Matte clear may have a little different sheen to matte black paint. If you can’t get it perfect, lower sheen matches better than higher. I’d suggest flat black with matte clear, based on the pic.

That is what I was planning to paint with next. I'm also going to fill in the small groves on the top to smooth out the look.

If it was printed in ABS, why didn't you try the acetone vapor trick for smoothing?

Disclaimer: I'm only 3d printer curious, but I've read a ton on the subject.

    1) I'm newer to 3d printing (just bought it end of January) and this is my first print in ABS
    2) I've had a bad experience with acetone in the past, but that was really from me being an idiot
    3) I know I can easily fill sand and paint and get good results.

I might consider giving it a go however. The biggest challenge will be time and temps. Kids activities and all

It’s not technically padded, but it’s so thick and fluffy compared to the factory one. Well worth paying the premium over a cheap Amazon or EBay cover.

As soon as my Katzkin went on, I knew. :spending:

Maybe try it on one of the previous attempts just to see what happens? That way you don't screw up the last one.

Reverse its direction. See if that works. I put mine in backwards but I can’t remember what the voltage was when I realized it was backwards.

I just started it in the driveway so I didn't get the RPMs up. I'll drive around today and monitor it.

I put it in wrong initially because I got the battery light on the dash so then reversed it and no more battery light.
