My 2006 Tundra Limited Access Cab has an after market radio in it and I want to replace it with the correct OEM radio. Problem is, I'm not sure which radio is correct for the 2006. The two types I've seen for sale on eBay are am/fm with cassette and CD players, and radios with all that but NOT the cassette player. Can anyone bring me up to speed on which is correct for my 2006 Limited? Thanks up front! Ron...

There were at least three stereo setups for these trucks: Non-JBL stereo with no amplifier, Non-JBL stereo with amplifier, JBL with amplifier.

I have a 2006 Limited Access cab with the non-JBL tape + CD combo I've removed from my truck and won't be reinstalling if it's interesting.

I have the 6 speaker system, 2 in each front door, one in each rear door. My truck had a amp under the rear passenger seat which I also have in-hand.

I have the original speakers as well, they've been for sale in the 1st gen sales forum for quite a while now.

Can you check to see if there's an amp under a fabric cover in the passenger side cubby under the rear seat @FirstGenTundra1867 ?

His is a Limited, which came standard with JBL with amplifier IIRC.

Ron, if you go to Tundra Owners, create an account, input your VIN #, it should show what came with your vehicle.

I will give it some thought but I might consider getting rid of mine out of my Limited along with the amplifier !

Mine has been sitting in my closet for the last 15 years. I'd give it away for free but one of the amps has a bad solder joint and cuts out intermittently plus its an 02.

Bubba: I've never used a forum format like this one, so I hope this gets to you. I don't know if we have a private conversation going here, or if it's an extension of my original post. It's going to take some getting used to. Please let me know if you get this. Thanks, Ron (FirstGenTundra1867).

Thank you for the offer, but my Tundra is a 2006, so I'm unsure if your 2002 radio would be a true bolt-in. Do you happen to know the part # on your radio? As far as I can determine, the correct one for my truck would be #86120-OC100. Thanks, Ron (Near Pasadena, CA.).

Do your have JBL on the speakers ?
Have you created an acct at Toyota Owners and inputed your VIN # ?
Have you located your amp, possibly where @shifty` mentioned ?

My Limited had the amp behind the driver side rear seat behind the wall trim panel !

Hey, this is working! Lol. Re the Account at Toyota Owners--please let me know exactly what "Toyota Owners" is: A service offered by Tundras.com, or a Toyota Motor Co. website, or? As to my speakers, I just went back out to the truck and looked at them again but none of the 6 have the JBL logo. However they all look original to the truck, and are the same as the ones I had on my 2004 and 2005 Tundras, so I'm sure they are OEM. No sign of an amp in the location Shifty gave me, i.e., inside the storage bin under the rear passenger seat.

So is mine, eh. Unless I'm reading wrong, we both have '06 Limited AC. But there's no JBL branding on anything in my truck, I've had all of it out, and my VIN doesn't come back with JBL anything.

You don't need to create an account. Just use the link I gave. Plug in your VIN. It'll barf back the details on your truck and let you download a PDF with 'all specs'. That's where my image came from.

The amp - you won't see it directly in the bin. The bin has a fabric or mesh liner in the bottom. You need to pull it up, amp should be underneath with the later-model access cabs, IIRC. You won't just see it inside. Let me see if I can find pics. I wish I'd taken some on my installl.

Note he has a Double Cab, and the amp mounting place is different. Some earlier models had amps in the dash also. The one thing I think is being missed here is there are two different amplified systems. One is JBL. The other isn't. Crutchfield actually recognizes this as I recall, and I didn't know until I started plugging things into their site.

Ok, so I can't find a pic online. But basically, my amp was under the carpet somewhere in the vicinity of the red arrows. I can't remember if there was a plstic piece covering it or not. The blue line was the basic path the wiring ran up to the head unit. Look round underneath that grey carpet.

@BubbaW This is how you know you have a JBL system.

In this video, a DC like yours, with the amp on the back wall.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMbZNdReTOw

Notice when they get to the amp, JBL brands ALL of their audio equipment, you can see the orange JBL logo on the amp here.

    upload_2021-9-4_21-29-34.jpg

In addition to that, if you look closely at your old OEM head unit, there should be a JBL logo on it as well, likely in the same location.

Here's my radio and my amp. Clearly - no JBL logo on the face. No JBL branding at the sticker. Toyota catalog doesn't say "JBL" for this part number. Same with the amp it clearly says it's made by Panasonic!

It is Toyota Motor Co. and while you can get the Veh specs by simply putting your VIN # in, by creating an account, you can also see all Service History performed on your truck done at a Toyota Dealer !

Does the tape not advance when you put it into there radio? I’ve repaired quite a few boomboxes and most tape decks have a rubber belt that needs replacement when they break. The good news though is a lot of the belts are the same size so they can generally be replaced with a generic belt unless Toyota is devious enough to make it non-standard. Won’t know unless you open it up.

Yeah I heard all those belts just turn to goo from the 80s Marantz decks and stuff. Good call, my symptoms are a big buzzing noise and the tape plays at about half speed. That probably is just the belt eh? I'll crack it open and report back.

Check for a loose ground wire as well because they’ve been known to be culprit to noise.

Took the radio apart, the speakers sound good. My CD plays crystal clear I think the tape deck just isn't engaging it flush to the winders.

Here is an album with some photos and a video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/wRzXgUuXVBZJRJf59

It grabbed it pretty flush in the video, but when you spin the decks manually if the tape isn't engaged down the little gears barely make contact. It's hard to test it without it moving, I tried to wire it back up as a carcass to watch it, but it's tough to hold all the pieces. The belt looks pretty good, but maybe it just needs to be newer and tighter.

I can’t get the video to play even if I wait for it to “get ready to play” for some reason. Is the back plate holding the gears in place? Taking it off might give you a better look to see what’s happening physically.

Agree that the belt looks fine and appears to be properly taut. At the 1:00 mark onward it appears to work properly. I would blow it out good., lubricate those places that need lubricant and go from there. I'd even consider trying other cassettes.

Finally got it to play. The video is very helpful.

Something isn’t right about that mechanism. Normally when the tape is in there it should automatically lock into place (you shouldn’t have to push it down manually). I’ll have to take a look at mine since I haven’t played around with a car tape player setup.

I’ll go check to see if it’ll load mechanically or if power is required for that task.
