Thanks! I do admit it's on a 2" leveling kit and I want to move to a suspension setup that'll give it a better ride. I've also debated on whether I want to go a size higher, 285/70, to fill in the wheel wells some more. Just hoping it won't rub too badly.

 

since I don’t know how lifted my front end is I’m nervous this size is too small. Luckily I work in parts and will be rolling a tire out to my truck before I buy them. I’m curious how the diameter will compare to the 305/55r20s currently on my truck.

looks to be a .05” diameter difference towards smaller. However on an 18” wheel you get more sidewall “meat” and the optical illusion could make the tire look bigger/better on a lifted truck.

 

2.5-3.0" of lift you'll be fine with stock uppers. Of course, that's assuming you're doing a more mild type of lift. If going higher end and are chasing performance, what's another $700 in the journey?

Get your camber and toe checked on the alignment for that outer wear. As close 0.0 to 0.1 for camber and .12 per side for toe will likely stop it.

Those look like 5100s. So definitely not more than 3” unless there’s some hodgepodge spacer block on top of the coil (doesn’t appear to be in that image).
5100s have notches where ride height/preload can be changed .75”-3” I believe are the limits. 3 or 4 settings.

 

Yes they are 5100s and they have a rusty shim that is 3/4 to an inch thick. Should my upper CA be this low weighted?

 

UCA appears to be at its limit or very close to it. Someone with WAAAY more suspension knowledge than me can chime in though.

jack it up and see how much droop you get. Should be substantial (I don’t have a number, but again *that guy* can chime in).
Lots of people get away with OEM UCAs on 3-3.5” lift and go camping, and hit those kinds of trails and are fine. I wouldn’t take it to Moab but depends on your usage and if you can get and keep the truck aligned it should be ok.

Not to change subjects completely here but I see a lot of wicked wheel/ tire combos but unless I'm mistaken 275/70R18 max out at 8.5inch wide wheel.. How are all of you with 9 inch wheels finding the wear on your tires? I'd love to get 9 inch wheels but I don't want to kill the lifespan of my sidewall.. I've looked through a lot of different forums but this seems to be the highest concentration on this wheel/ tire setup I've come across.

 

Discount tire's website says bfg ko2 275/70r18 fit 7-9.5" rims.
275mm = 10.827", the tread is wider than my 18x9 rim. And the sidewall bulges a little further past the 9" rim.

I have noticed extra wear on the outside edge of my front tires only. I had an allignment when they were first installed, and then rotated them and got another allignment (it was off) at 2,950 miles after noticing the odd wear. My tires are e load rated and max out at 80psi. BFG says if I set them to 50psi it matches the max load capacity of my truck, so no 'need' to go higher than 50psi load capacity wise. I've been running them at 42psi for daily driving lately, and had them lower at 38psi when i first noticed the outside edge was rounding off. I suspect that if I were to inflate them higher (and get a less comfy ride) the edge of the tread would possibly lift off the ground and/or have less force on it, yielding less wear on the edges. Conversly if I had the same overall height tire at the same psi, but 12.5" wide tire OR same tire on narrower 8.5" rim, I think the face of the tread would be curved a little more, lifting the edge of the sidewall block off the ground more, inducing less wear.

Not easy to see in picture but the outside edge is starting to look like a used eraser. If you rub your finger perpendicularly over inside edge it feels like a sharper square, kinda like a dull knife.

I've checked about 30 trucks with offroad tires in my work parking lot, EVERY truck seems to have this extra wear on the outside edge of front tires. Maybe it's just from going 70mph through a curve on the interstate.

P.S.Edit: I need to Chalk my tires, never got around to doing that. Would tell me at which psi the outside edge starts to touch the ground. Maybe I have them too low.

 

@Gee Dub - not sure you aren't seen incorrect camber and tow here vs pressure. If they didn't set the camber at 0.0 or 0.1, then you'll be experiencing what every Tundra does from the factory. You can search for alignment specs and you'll find a lot about it.

The chalk test is easy enough to do if you have a straight flat area, but 38 seems low to me for an E tire. This said, I've been wrong before, so YMMV

 

My initial allignment @Zero miles and 38psi cold, no extra weight, was 0.0 left, 0.1 right.
Edit for ref: as low as 35 psi on my specific tire is still greater load capacity than I need for daily driving safely.

2,950 miles later I increased to 42psi cold, rotated and second allignment was 0.2 left, 0.1 right.

Today I'm a couple hundred miles shy of 5k more miles on this configuration, the front tire's outside edge seem to have about the same amount of rounding that my rears got when they were on the front first.

 

@Gee Dub i have the exact same tires. Also noticed that slight wear on the outer edge- I think it is from turning/cornering and am not too worried about it.

Also FYI- I finally chalk tested mine out this AM (had them for 4k miles) and 37/38 psi warm (so 35ish cold) resulted in even pressure across the width of the tread. I have a 2018 2wd crew max- the only extra weight is about 100 from my step rails and 150lbs of sand bags in the back to reduce the bed bounce.

 

@ajs4 I've been measuring psi 'cold', before the sun touches a tire. I noticed having more overall rubber/surface area than stock tires, the psi fluctuates more with heat.

I was chalking my tires yesterday until it rained me out, im at about 5,100 miles since new and gonna rotate/oil change soon. I found my fronts at 71 psi 'warm' were chalking nicely, all of the water siping was contacting the road at least, but a little too high still as the inside edge wasnt all the way down yet.

My rears at 64 psi were much more overinflated relative to the fronts and I stopped due to rain.


One very interesting thing; at 38 psi these were relatively squishy and comfy. I had set them to 56 psi cold the other day and they rode much more harshly, like I felt every crack in the road. Then surprisingly at 70psi (cold) they feel better in some regards, but not as comfy when set down in the 30 psi range... rears still too high at 64psi though.

 

Finally got the look I was going for. 275/70R18 Goodyear Duratrac on TRD Clone wheels. I would have preferred a a slightly wider offset wheel but couldn’t find an aftermarket wheel I liked. Kept going back to the TRD wheels.

Thanks. I wish I could ask the previous owner but it would be against my company’s policy to reach out since I bought it from our wholesale lot. I would love to know all the things he’s done. It has 5110s and shimmed struts. Shackles in the rear. BMC. My guess is 2.5 front and 1 in the rear.

 

275/70/r18 KO2 with the SCS F5 uhh just the perfect combo. Just removed the front air dam and no rubbing and I tried (see above). I’ll have to weight them but from the stock steelies and ht don’t think I gained that much per corner.

2” Spacer lift up front and RAS in the rear. Still has a little rake which I like.

 

275/70’s really are the perfect size for these trucks, I miss mine. Went with 285/75/17’s when mine wore out on some Methods. A bit too big and too much offset for me, also doesn’t fit in my garage!

Stock shackles?

 

Yea stock shackles. I did have the CB 1" Shackles for the rear in hand at one point, but I opted for the RAS for towing and hauling.

 

The +1 don't even work with ras, found out the hard way.
