What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

This is something I’m quite concerned about… being a young male, driving a pickup truck, insurance is not cheap, especially in my area. I can’t afford anything more than liability.

Im pretty sure that any body damage, fender bender, or light accident would total the truck, which is worrying considering the drivers around here.

 

It's never high enough unless you can get an impact in there to break the rust bond.

 

Just stopped at a shop today, They ran an estimate with all new parts at $6,800 which totaled the vehicle in their system. I'll be sending the info onto my insurance company (USAA) and we'll see what they get for an estimate. Then I start negotiating from there...
I did auto body work for 10 years, so I'm pretty comfortable with this process. Now I work in finance so I'm comfortable with that side of the industry also. Years ago I had a similar situation where insurance tried to pay me $3k when I totaled my 2000 BMW GS 1150. "It's an old bike" they said. They ended up paying me $9,500 in the end
My goal is to get a check out of this, then source the parts myself from (ideally) a used black tundra/sequoia. Then I can just swap the parts and not have to paint anything.

Back to my original question - is there a source somewhere that shows the interchangeability of parts between tundras & sequoias?

USAA is also who I use. If you can present evidence to them proving the value of your truck is higher, including comps from recent auctions/sales, itemized receipts of work you've done recently, you can get the price up. They *will* play ball. They're not the average insurance company looking to save $$. They've always taken care of me, even when an uninsured celebrity rapper did $23k in damage to my Camry valued at $24.5k in a truck he paid cash for the night before, and failed to tell his insurance company about. Camry was in the shop the next day, I was in a rental, and had a check in-hand when I went to pick it up after work was complete.

I mean, technically "no", but you could use the Toyota Parts System to cross reference parts.

Just look up the year of Sequoia you're eyeballing, click through to the part via exploded diagrams, and click the 'What this fits' box to see if it matches your year/trim. That should get you in the ballpark, but WILL NOT be 100% accurate due to slight variations between models.

Ordered up some parts. Two of these are 'just in case' Toyota decides to discontinue soon. Not taking any chances.

Transfer case actuator is something I’ll be doing soon. Should I be ordering a seal for the shift shaft?

I dunno why the hell they called it this. When I looked in the exploded parts diagram, this was actually showing as the seal for the TC drain/fill plug. The part someone listed back here but actually applies to '07+ so I went and looked up my own p/n and I'll verify dimensions on arrival.

And if it's not ... I just got a reall f'n cool thick washer to throw in the random hardware bin!

Are you sure the actuator is your issue? That's a damn spendy part!

 

did they write for new oem? Typically on older vehicles aftermarket or LKQ is used which might not have totaled it. Can certainly understand your want to have new OEM parts if that’s the case, I would as well. Glad to hear u have experience, If u have the means to source a total that has the parts you want and a low mileage engine, I’d be interested in it. I believe the sequoia front bumper and fenders are different then the DC. Not 100 tho.

 

Not really. Gotta disassemble, desolder the LED wires and chuck the front housing in a lathe. Open it up from about 12.5mm to 15mm (to fit the O.D. of the 3/8" anvil). A proper sized reamer is necessary here. Once thats done, you've got to make a custom adapter bushing/sleeve for the internal impacting main shaft assembly to center of anvil. Then resolder/reassemble.

 

I don't have access to half that shit. What would you charge me to make one?

I'm fairly certain. I used to be able to get the truck into 4WD by pressing the button and rapping on the side of the actuator with a hammer, but it would successfully shift less and less until it got stuck in 4WD one time. I was able to get it back to 2WD, but it seems as if it was getting weaker and weaker. Now, it won't shift at all, even when you hit the side of it hard with a hammer. I know the ADD actuator works, or at least it did the last time I tested it.

The reason I'd like to replace it is because all of the hardware is very rusty, and the plastic housing is split in a couple places. I'm not sure I'd be able to disassemble it and not break it in the process. Here's a pic:


Definitely not good. I'm thinking of buying a used one, or a cheap one off Amazon and swapping/interchanging parts so that I have a solid and reliable actuator with mostly OEM parts for less than what a complete OEM unit would cost.

I sold them months ago, but I had 2 of the gen 2 2553-20's I also converted. These are easier as no LED's to worry about. It's just not quite as strong.



Here's the 1st style bushing I made from brass tube I got at Ace hardware. Just chucked a short section in the drill and spun it against a file.





I get around 80-100 ft-lb tightening out of the newer 3453 and these were probably 60-80 ft-lb. With around a 2 second pull, a bit more if held for 5-10 seconds.

Stupid question but they don’t make the M12 with a 3/8” square driver?
Or even just taking their hex driver and putting an adapter in?
OR are you like me and just like to be different and have the only one cause you ‘can’?

 

I have the 3/8 M12 impact, but it's a touch bulky for some areas.

 

They do and I've owned it. But there are places the stubby m12 3/8" is too chunky to fit.

And places that the 1/4" hex driver is too long with the adapter.. I've even modded an adapter but wanted shorter.



So came up with my own solution.

 

The Prius has some sort of electric power steering. It feels funny.
Actually the oddness of it made me research & discover it was electric.
I discovered it felt funny before I discovered it was EPS.
Turns out it's a thing to take Prius EPS and use it in custom cars - easy swap.

 

Look into an "agreed value" insurance policy. I think some companies offer them at 20 years, some not until 25 model years. You're at 23 model years, so maybe. Basically, you agree on the value of your vehicle & they bill you accordingly. It might be a reasonable solution for you depending on the details.
