Update: The local Toyota service center says that my motor is not an interference motor. There is no damage besides the busted timing belt. Cost of repair $1,800.

Yeah, naw. It's an interference engine if it's a V8/2UZ-FE. Whoever told you that is not correct. And you're a lucky dude, go buy a lottery ticket.

$1,800 isn't the worst I've seen for replacing timing belt, water pump, tensioner and pulleys, but it's not a drop in the bucket either. I'm trying to think back, I think the best quote I got locally was more like $1,650 but one was like $400 north of what you got quoted. I see guys on here with stealerships charging $1,300 and I'm jealous!

I could re-link you to the research I did, but here are just a couple of hits on it. Gates (major parts manufacturer) clearly lists all 2UZ-FE as 'interference', and parts fitment and accurate information is critical to their products.

Yeah the 4.7 is definitely an interference motor

I wonder what the disconnect is here. This topic keeps coming up. The last time it came up on the 1st gen Tundra Facebook page, at least 3-4 people said their belt broke and their engine was not damaged. That page is full of idiots but I can't imagine they were all lying.

Best explanation, read the middle paragraph of what I just posted: "valves can contact pistons". It's not a definite. But it's definitely not something you want to risk.

People win the lottery every day. OP got really lucky. I'm happy for him.

I wonder how quickly the cams stop rotating and at what position they tend to stop once they aren’t being driven by the belt.

I also noticed in the engine tear down video that the VVTi engines at least had scalloped pistons with valve reliefs in them. I’m not sure if it’s enough to clear the valves completely, or if the earlier non-VVTi engines had the same pistons.

If the belt didnt break, maybe the tensioner was just weak enough to flutter?

If I wasn't so damn busy, I'd dig through the parts on an '00 and an '06 and compare part numbers, look up pics of the parts. I suppose it's plausible, but I'm having trouble thinking back on how many times I've seen a piston that lacked similar on anything I've owned that was newer than a '96.

if you really wanna whack a valve, XAT goes up to 12.5:1 or higher.
