I checked the ruggedliner site. No luck with 2022 - 2023 Tundras. (oddly nothing available)
    Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yes mine does ride against the cab. In my pic I was demonstrating that I can pull it away from the cab even when it is in the locked position and it pulls from the cab and lifts up from the bed. This is what happens in wind driving over 65mph. If you open the zip file I posted it is a video of it. I think this is the root problem they have discovered.

For the group I purchased mine from the parts department and installed it myself. I will call that Brand Engagement Center listed in the recall doc under FAQ and see how they are going to handle since there are probably others that purchased the same way. Seems they will want to make it right regardless since it is a liability issue. I will post what they say!

I checked mine and it’s tight and flush..has no give. But I think you are right on regarding the reason of the recall.

I took a look at mine this morning and it has the same issue, when its up and against the cab it lifts up off the cab. I crawled up into the bed and pushed up on the cover in serveral places and its latched down, I can't see how it could come off while closed.......

When I saw this recall notice I thought two things, one "What?! Really?! The tonneau cover can flyoff?!" and two, "Well, I should check mine." I used Raylo's picture to know where to look. When I did so, I found the left-side knob and three washers had completely fallen off at some point and were lying on the bed mat. The right side was loose but had not fallen off. My truck is a year old and has gone 19,500 miles. There is no way to be sure, but I suspect this happened or was hastened when I was helping move some guys across the state last summer and drove 150 miles with the tonneau cover folded back. It did not hold well in the braces on that trip, and blew and rattled enough that it blocked the rear view mirror on the drive, even though I stopped and tightened the braces. I used the bed after that to stow camping gear several times, so maybe it didn't happen right away. Over the winter I have not been in the very rear of the bed much. Therefore I don't know exactly when this came apart. Because of the bed mat the pieces did not roll but were hidden back there in the corner of the bed, so I did not discover it until now. I screwed everything back in and it is fine after a 250-mile trip yesterday.

I contacted the brand engagement center this morning. They told me the recall is for all VIN manufactured during that period regardless if they have the cover or not. Because they don't have visibility to any covers the dealer may have installed as part of a purchase or for people like me that bought that part number from the parts department they send the notice to all VIN to locate all vehicles that may have it installed.

I wonder how they will handle people like me who bought it second-hand from someone. I assume because it's a safety thing that once they issue the fix, any dealer will make the required modification on mine. But I've never dealt with a recall on a part I purchased second-hand, so I'm not sure.

I called them yesterday and requested a refund for the cover. It seems that if they are going to be destroying the covers on unsold trucks they should be taking these back and giving us refunds. I haven't heard back yet. I'll give them a couple of days then call back.

I took my cover off before going to the dealer for service. This aluminum piece dosnt move and is riveted to the rails, the rivets are the only thing holding this cover onto the truck after you tighten the handle bolts. As for talk of refund, the cover has gone up in price in Canada so I would rather have a replacement and not a refund then have to pay the difference on price.

That's a pretty poor mechanical connection to the rails. Yea rivets can be good, but there those rivets are serving to hold the bracket from front/back and left/right force much more than up/down force. I think their design is flawed from the get go. IMHO.

Yea, if they are instructed to take the covers off of any vehicle before selling, then how can they also not refund for those purchased from Toyota?

This is reminiscent of my 2013 Honda Ridgeline recall for the straps that hold the gas tank on coming loose due to excessive rust. The concern is that the gas tank COULD fall off, which is bad, surprise. Honda issued the recall but did not have a means by which the dealers could test if a particular truck needed repair, or could not be repaired and thus Honda would do a "re-purchase". It took months, and I mean months, of back and forth with Honda on this one. But here too they were telling me to continue driving my truck even though they had issued the safety recall yet had no way to determine if my truck was safe or not. I had my local dealer convinced that I should get a loaner vehicle until this was resolved, but his heart ache is that he had no way to charge this back to Honda...again, go figure.

They should handle it the same as a 1st owner. Similar to what @donmartin mentioned. Because Toyo only has visibility to the trucks that had it as a factory/port-installed option, they will send a recall letter to all owners who purchased their truck prior to the recall going out. If your truck as the OEM part on it, whether your dealer installed it, you bought it from a Toyota parts desk, or you bought it 3rd party...you'll get the remedy all the same.

good pics, ya thats kinda shitty

for example the undercover uses a big bolt and then a clamp to the side rails, I think its a much better design.

perhaps this is where they cut some costs to make them for toyota. I wonder what the OEM BAK ones look like right there.

anyways, Im glad they just took that off my build just now, Im fine with that, I didnt really want a 1300 cover in the loan anyways.

now if I could just get stupid bed liner off they are forcing, this is where I don't like the Toyota allocation system.

Not to scare anyone, but a point of clarification...

The rivets are the only thing securing the cover to the truck, when it's in the full "folded up" position. Otherwise, when the cover is down it's secured to the truck in 4 additional (6 total) places with the locking mechanisms. My 6.5' bed had 2 sets of locks that interlock with the deck rails.

Just an FYI - take the warning seriously. I knew/thought my cover was only slightly loose. . . checked today and my passenger side fastener was completely off.
I think I've driven with the tonneau in the against-cab position once, and folded back/lashed only a few times.

Seems pretty consistent there are issues, regardless of your use-case.

My Pillar rattle was coming from the oh-shit Handles. I popped the covers off and tightened both of them ( even though it was just the drivers side that was noisy ) and it is gone for now as least.

Don't tell them. I suspect the dealer isn't going to care how the cover got on the truck. They love recall work. Easy money.

How does Toyota know that you have the MX4? Did the dealer install it?

the recall was shotgunned to every tundra built. they dont know if the oem cover was installed as a DIO or after the sale.

they are just being overly cautious. they will do the recall if you have a oem cover installed, if not your vin will be noted as not having a oem cover.

I called the dealership I got my truck from in January 2022, and got the OEM cover from in March of 2022, yesterday. He told me mine is for sure on the list, and that I needed to remove it immediately. Of course, he said as soon as they fix them, they will call me in to get the new one put on. Lord knows when that is going to be.

whats really surprising is that the recall covers 130k tundra's. thats not a lot of tundra's built in 2 yrs time roughly. guess that shows why i dont see that many tundra's on the road right now.

i mean if you go historical numbers

haha, no I did it myself, but I think as others may have mentioned Toyota just rolled out the recall to every truck as the tonneau could have been a dealer installed item & they cant account for which trucks they were installed on

Are you saying that the recall notice came through the Toyota app? I just now looked on the app and it shows no recalls. Curious that it doesn't even show the blank display safety recall which I know for sure mine has based on its VIN.

I wonder if that is when they switched over to 2023 model year & did some tweaks / maintenance on the lines

I went in for an oil change to the dealer not local to me. The service guy said oh there’s a recall for a cover on your truck, we can take a look at it if you want. I told him I knew about it and I’ll take care of it, he deferred the recall and that was it.

My "Health & Alerts" section of the main screen didn't show anything until I clicked on it and then it listed the "Safety Recalls".
